MechWarrior 4 at Midnight? (No) [Updated]

The front page of Mektek.net asks Are You Ready? and offers a countdown timer that looks like it will expire at Midnight EDT. They may just be baking a cake, or that may be when they are planning on making the promised free release of MechWarrior 4. We shall see. Thanks Hump. Update: The timer has been replaced by a blurb saying: "Coming very, very, very soon," but for Assault Tech 1: Battletech, "an independent, non commercial Activision's MechWarrior 2 series remake using a more advanced DirectX 7 graphics engine, BlitzBasic's Blitz3D."

Don't forget, this will also have Mekteks HUGE backlog of mods, mechs, maps, skins, etc.

False alarm guys (sorry Stephen).

Not a total wash out though. They have released Assault Tech 1 which is a brand new, made from scratch Battletech simulator. It play very similar to MW2 as far as controls and feel.

Here's a video of the game in action:

MechWarrior 2 runs great in DOSBox on modern hardware and still holds up... at least for me. Maybe it was mostly nostalgia but I recently played through the jade falcon campaign and a couple missions into the wolf campaign. You can follow this to set it up http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/GAMES:MechWarrior_2

Someone should remake Battletech: The Crescent Hawk Inception

I read a book that was written in the fifteenth century the other day. It was brilliant.

Yeah, same here, except I saw a kid who painted a sunflower. He did a really good job with the fingerpaints, and only sneezed on it once or twice. It was still a sunflower, though, so no reason I'd want to see an original Van Gogh painting of the same thing. It's all the same, right?

Forgive the overabundance of sarcasm, but the game's graphics are your window into the world. While they're not the most important thing, they are our most direct and immediate connection to the game. Why you'd even use a DX7 engine now, beyond cost-cutting, is confusing. Developers had their hands on DX7 over a decade ago, and things have improved vastly since then, in every way, for gamers, programmers, and hardware manufacturers. While I'm glad MW is getting some attention, this doesn't seem like it'll bring a new generation into the fold. At best, it'll be a nice romp through memory lane.

well actually...I started playing NWN2 a year or so ago...gfx were great, game ran smooth but the the writing/ambience was so pathetically thin I installed BG2 and played straight through, which turned out to be my highlight of the year gaming wise for me.
Personally, I consider imagination to be my window to the world, and nothing interfaces with it better than good writing. Gfx/special fx/looks are great hooks sure, but they hardly nourish the soul and the very idea that they are the most immediate connection to the game, would consign everything to trash faster than a jive talking marketing team taking precedence over genuine wisdom/insight into the human condition.
Each to their own though

Apparently it's the beta that is available right now. The front page http://mektek.net/projects/at1/promo/index.html says you need to download their distribution program to get it.

The distribution program is going to be necessary when the free MW4 gets released. There is such a massive amount of content between the retail games and the add-on work Mektek did that it would take you nearly a whole afternoon to download and install on your own. I got their application running, its works well, no spyaware etc.
