Modern Warfare 2 Uproar of the Day

This CNN iReport has a leaked video that seems to depict some sort of terrorist mode in Modern Warfare 2 where the objective appears to be to kill civilians in the military shooter sequel. This clip was posted earlier on the YouTube before being pulled after a request from Activision. Thanks DangerDoggie. Update: There's an arguably better quality version of this clip on LiveLeak. Thanks Eric.

This is nothing. I saw an entire stadium of civilians blown up in The Sum of All Fears.

Shindler's List was pretty anti-civilian too. I watched. It doesn't make me a nazi.

This is no different. They're even allowing you to skip the scene, just like a movie. The only thing notable about this is that they're pussing out by giving you the option to skip it. You've never been able to skip a part of a game you didn't like before, that i know of (not counting cheat codes and game genies). You had to stomach through it no matter what if you wanted to get to the end. Movies, youve always had the ability to look away during the scary parts.

What's next IW? Rape, torture, and enslavement missions?

if it will help sell the product it will be done. nothing wrong with it as long as people pay to play.

While, if true, I personally find it in poor taste, I don't see any reason why this sort of topic needs to be absolutely taboo in videogames. In a game intended to be a serious warfare simulator, there are risks with including content such as this that are not generally inherent to using similar content in over-the top, tongue-in-cheek games like Postal or Grand Theft Auto. I think this ill-advised if it is indeed true given the serious nature of the theme as compared to other "Murder Simulators".

On a side note, I just thought I'd mention I get a good laugh every time the usual suspects use a topic like this to interject their tired anti-American rhetoric into a topic where there is no correlation between their diatribes and the subject at hand. You guys are so predictable...

this type of gameplay is the reason i have not pre-purchased the current installment to splinter cell. it seems everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of playing as the bad guys in video games.

Honestly, I'm glad that developers are looking to push the boat out a bit when it comes to politics and moral values. At the end of the day a game that features you killing a few civilians is NOTHING in comparison to the tens of thousands of lives extinguished as a result of US foreign policy. The media only stirs shit like this up in order to generate revenue for themselves and to serve the political whims of their owners, rather than for the betterment of society. I hope this generates a huge amount of publicity and results in better sales for IW, just to teach the media a lesson.

i think its a copy of what happened in mumbai last year where pakistani terrorists stormed a shopping mall. i dont really find it disturbing playing as the terrorist if it helps tell the story but its not something i want to do in a video game. they could have used cut scenes to tell this part of the story.

The thing is those terrorists in Mumbai were just slack-jawed yokel boys from the ass-end of nowhere. They were fed shit and brainwashed into thinking they were warriors of god and their sacrifice would ensure their family's future. The communications intercepts from Mumbai showed that they had to be prodded on by their handlers because they kept stopping and staring at big windows and wide-screen TVs.

The real terrorists there were the bastards sitting in a bunker in Pakistan convincing these kids to murder innocents and kill themselves, which is about as big a sin in Islam as you can get. If this is done to make people think about vulnerable people being brainwashed by assholes and the need for education then great, if it's just a "Lolz we r evl terorist!" then it's a pretty shoddy attempt at controversy.

Well that's one way to get your game featured on mainstream media. Yikes. Fox is going to have a field day with this one.

I'm almost willing to bet this was leaked on purpose. So you pissed of all these hard core gamers. release teases of some insanity and get them to bite at buying the game again. Played like a fiddle.

WOW... This is nuts.

Why in the world did Infinity Ward develop this? Are they nuts. Shooting down civilians is fun? I dont care if its just part of the storyline or what but thats wrong in any case. Also I heard theres another part where u play a terrorist shooting US troops. Infinity Ward has lost their minds.

I refuse to get the game.

And for those of you who think this is cool. You need to get a reality check. This is crossing the line.

I always wanted to see WW2 games cover the Holocaust. Where you liberate concentration camps. I guess it would be too controversial.

It's okay guys, as long as your not shooting Americans the American press will ignore it within a week. Especially if they are Russians.

It's cool to shoot a member of any other nation or race but once they are either American or Black it's a whole new issue.

Imagine if a game like Choplifter was released today? Who didn't every once in a while take out some of their frustrations on the civilians?

it is a GAME people! after all, if you object to this you most likely refer to a FPS as a "Murder Simulator"

i just call it what it is - Spam Warfare 2
