OFP: Dragon Rising DLC & Patch Soon

There's an Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Interview on Eurogamer chatting with Sion Lenton about Codemasters' military shooter. As they point out separately, along the way they learn that the first DLC for the game is due by the end of this month, along with a patch that will include network optimizations. "Our intention is to align [the patch] with the first DLC pack that's coming out as well, which is due around the end of October. Hopefully we'll do the whole thing in one," Lenton tells them. He also says that they have plans for more DLC after that, but they want to see what players want first. "It's quite open-ended, it's not a lot of fuss for us to make new content - it's actually quite easy for us to get it out there, with regards to things like levels, game modes, etc," Lenton explains. "The other thing we actually like to look at is getting some new equipment in there as well."

So is this the patch that adds lean to this 'ultra realistic' bad boy?

I just hope they try to release the Bradley Fighting Vehicle as DLC. Because it's in early (Mar 2009) screenshots, but not the "finished" game. That'll just prove they ripped out content to sell as DLC.

Dedicated server. Improve AI. Get rid of the radial kids menu. Add some variation in the homogeneous environment. Lean is also needed.

Mod support is the most important.

Dedicated servers you say?

I can assure you we have not been ignoring you, we have been dealing with issues on a priority basis and obviously the connection issues amongst other things have been top priority over the last 120 hours.

I hear the calls but cannot promise anything at this stage, its not under development right now. More news if that changes

There's your answer from Codemasters regarding dedicated servers for this game.

Pretty sad state when they have to show content that didn't make it to the shelf to sell the game so they can use it later on to sell DLC. I have played this thing through and they will not see any of my cash for DLC. That is unless this DLC turns the game into Rainbow6, Battlefield, Falcon 4.0, Apache vs Longbow, The Sims3 ...... (you get the picture) super mega game there PR is trying to make me believe is in this DLC.

It's about 1hr past beer-thirty so forgive me if this makes no sense.

It's funny how the Modern Warfare 2 hullabaloo has suddenly spawned new stock conspiracy theories to apply everywhere. No mod support? They're going to push ten sets of overpriced DLC on us, obviously! No dedicated server? It's forced consolization, not just a terrible decision!

Not that I necessarily think it's untrue, It just still surprises me that no-one sees good business decisions coming a mile away regardless of how the end-user will feel.

(PS: Codemasters, I can has dediserver in patch plz? I'll give you a cookie...)

I think people would still be saying the same thing about this game even if MW2 didn't exist. I don't think the two things are related at all.

I can't believe they didn't make this game modable for the PC.

Not sure what you mean but no dedicated server, no joining games in progress, no anti-cheat and apparently no mod support are bad business decisions. The customer is right.

It's funny how people are clueless. Dragon Rising is "competing" against another game that has great modding support, a dedicated server and no DLC carrots. Not without it's own problems, that game is ArmA 2, not MW2.

I fully understand that obviously DLC is something that these companies are making money with, obviously the concept took or they wouldn't have continued it. I'm not paranoid, but the fact remains
that DLC is a concept that had it's hard roots on consoles. PC Games for the most part had, if anything expansion packs. (Ignoring the quality vs. price of these expansions).

Now, just because something is good buisness dosen't mean it's good for us as customers. And honestly, the concept probably took better on current generation consoles because people there didn't know any better, or ever had the option of getting custom mods etc. from 3rd parties.

It's something we all will have to live with, if we like it or not.

Except there aren't enough customers for the PC versions of games for it to matter. These are good business descisions because whether you like how they're treating PC gaming or not, they make money. On the platforms with a much, much larger number of potential and actual sales (the consoles) this is good strategy; they're not, and from a business standpoint should not be, concerned with how a much dmaller demographic feels about it; PC gamers will either buy into it and add a little to their bottom line, or not and they'll continue to view the platform as, at best, hard to make money on or at worst, untenable because it's not worth the effort of a more consumer-friendly business model.

I never said it's good business for the consumer, just good business. The videogames industry and members thereof are hardly the only for-profit business that view the outside world around them like this.

Not without it's own problems, that game is ArmA 2, not MW2.

When one of ArmA 2's problems isn't being so much of a simulation that I don't have much fun with it, I'll care about it.

Can you turn off the Microsoft Sam squaddie chatter yet? I'd probably enjoy it a lot more if I didn't have to listen to that, at least enough to spend money the next time it's on sale at at least half-price somewhere.

are they going to fix the awful physics with vehicles(tanks trippin on small rocks going at high speed and rolling mid air?) lol.

Also, this maybe beyond patch but for the love of god allow for trees and small brushes to be driven over especially by tanks... getting stuck on stuff like that with those huge tanks feels like a game that came out in 2000 not 2009...

The original let you run over everything pretty much, even trees if I remember rightly. Caused nice vertical flat bush textures to turn into nice horizontal flat bush textures. Cowering in the dark whilst a BMP tries to run you over, screaming into your mike for someone to volunteer to run over to the RPG launcher left in the middle of the road by a recently deceased squadie who is now a seagul, THAT is wargaming!

Nice move dropping important features found in the 2001 edition of a franchise, Codebastards!

If you have played this game, you fully UNDERSTAND that Dragon Rising does NOT compete with ARMA2. It is an arcade shooter that has been hamstrung by console limitations. It is closer to Call of Doody than a real milsim.

Still, I would like to see it evolve beyond its limited console roots. So MOD SUPPORT is essential!

I'd say that Dragon Rising is the GT to ARMA's Forza.

edit: though maybe it is more like GRID at times...
