Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising DLC Plans

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising video game developer interview on the Telegraph discusses the newly released military shooter, discussing the game's realism and graphics, and also outlining plans for patches and DLC:
We’ve got some very ambitious plans with DLC – our first pack is coming up in a matter of weeks. We’ll also have title updates coming up because once the game’s out there, we’ll need to get feedback from the people who are playing it, and if need be make a few adjustments and tweaks.

Our team are already prototyping all sorts of stuff to be released as DLC and we’re really excited about it. It’s a really different type of market now; I remember five or six years ago, you’d get a game, finish it, put it back on the shelf and that was it. But now it’s almost as though the game’s release is just the beginning, really. Ours is a game that lends itself very well to expansion – there will be weapons packs, map packs – all sorts of things we can do to get our product out there.

Don`t really care that much about the game itself. Would like to try the demo tho. Just so I can see 1st hand how the Flashpoint name was brought so low. I really wish if devs are gonna make a different game, that they`d use a different name.

It is as bad as Novalogic calling their games Delta Force. There hasn`t been a real Delta Force game since DF 2.

The game was created from ground up to be a console game and the PC part pays the price for that.

Pft, it's just a mediocre game to begin with, ports notwithstanding. I played the original OFP on the Xbox, and while it's certainly no substitute to the PC release, it was by no means bad.

They released the mission editor as a token appeasement to PC players who expect the ability to add their own content to the game, except aside from scripted enemy engagements and custom multiplayer maps (co-op and PvP) you can't add any user created content to the game, modders are definitely not welcome.

All the game files are locked away in a proprietary compressed format, no mod tools means no mods, no tweaks, no user created content.

You're at the mercy of whatever Codemasters decides to release for the game in the way of DLC packs and patches.

They have said they're working on a bug patch for the game but people are reading too much into it, I really doubt major issues will be addressed such as the lack of dedicated servers and the ability to join games in progress.

If they bolt on extra content to the existing game map it's going to get very repetitive and boring fast, the one large island map they created for the game just doesn't have enough variety in scenery and interesting places to explore - you can only do so much with changing the lighting and adding fog to a map to switch it up and make it feel unique. I think the one map approach was a poor decision, they should have broken up a bunch of different areas for maps much like GRID and DIRT have done - as well as other popular FPS shooters.

With all the complaints about the realism being crap do you think we will get a simple "Realism Mod" ever from the community?

If you have gone into the editor, you will see that there is almost nothing to choose from! One type of vehicle or dude and that's all! So it's great that they are expanding this action shooter!

The A.I. is able to shoot thru cover no problem and take you out like thru tall grass/bush's that you cannot see thru. There were some moments when the AI did something cool, like when I was hiding in a building and 3 of them came looking for me, opened the door carefully and came in shooting. Other than that, this game is a fail, lite shooter, realism is only hinted at then destroyed.

And as bitched about in almost every review..THE GODAMMN CHECK POINT SYSTEM..yes it really truly sucks especially when the game saves at a moment where your getting pounded and about to die. Fucking console game.

I might add one caveat to what kylania said. The AI seems quite good. So you might want to play it to see the AI at work.

Techie, for consoles it's a great "tactical shooter". FPS with some "realism" added. Way better than anything else for consoles.

For PC's it's an insult and a joke of a console port. The game was created from ground up to be a console game and the PC part pays the price for that.

If you have ArmA/ArmA2 and enjoy that type of realistic gameplay, totally skip OFPDR. If you expect even a shadow of that the original OFP game was you won't be happy with this new one.

This game is sitting on my desk right now but I have not installed it. I'm going through that WIC: Gold edition that D2D had on sale a few weeks back & then I'll hit this game up. So is it "ARMA FTW"?

Are they gonna enable the ability to look left/right in a vehicle or would that mess up the Xbox 360 controller scheme and confuse the kiddies, among other things..

The single player is decent. The MP blows chunks. There's a quick summary. It's a console port, through and through.

It's not a GFWL game... is it a Steamworks game? I doubt it. So one wonders what will happen with this DLC on the PC version. 2 months late and free? Not released at all?

In any event, I had this game preordered but canceled it after early feedback started rolling out. From what I hear the game is pretty blah on PC.
