Out of the Blue

The NFL season kicks off tonight, and I am pretty psyched. As I've mentioned in the past, as a baseball/football fan, my readiness for this moment usually depends on how well the Mets are doing, which means I've been waiting for tackle football to resume since June.

That was a riot to watch, though I was glad he was having fun by the end, as it honestly looked like he was going into shock there for a few seconds...

The kids first coaster ride is priceless.

That's almost my exact reaction I had the first time I rode a roller coaster at Six Flags in San Jose, CA... with the triple loopy-loop!

The kids first coaster ride is priceless. I did not have a camera at the time but my youngest daughter did pretty much the same thing, and it was a triple looper..

Yeah, I just did some snooping around and found some reviews that showed significant (10-15% in some cases) increases in some games with the 2GB if you were playing at 2560x1600 or with lots of AA.

That seems pretty logical, yeah. So you're unlikely to use it now, unless you're going to hook up a 32 inch plasma to your computer. (Hey, the card comes with native HDMI! )

It also looks like that cooler's pretty nice and quiet, which is a big plus for me. I replaced the cooler on my 8800GT with an Accelero S1 for passive cooling, and was planning on doing the same with a 4890 if/when I buy one of those. It probably won't be able to handle a 4890 passively, but the little fan kit they sell separately for $5-10 is supposed to be as near to silent as you can get.

Most likely it doesn't help right now, and you're just as well off buying a version with 1GB. I didn't find it the first time through, but they do have a 1GB version as well :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102841

I guess it kind of depends on what you value more. To me, a quiet graphics card is a must. I hate vacuum cleaners in my room. If noise isn't so much an issue, then don't spend any extra money on a quieter cooler.

As for the 1GB vs 2GB, right now I doubt there's anything that uses the extra Gig, but if you keep the card for two years or so, it's not out of the question that you'll come across something that uses it. (Rage perhaps?)

30 bucks for an extra Gig of V-RAM, eh, to each his own whether it's worth it or not. Now that I found the 1GB version, I'd probably recommend that one.

Edit : Pricewise it seems about even with a GTX275. I've seen very few performance reviews that compare the two, but I think they were fairly even. (4890 vs. 275)

This GTX275 comes with a free copy of Batman.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130475

But I see a lot of people saying that it runs pretty damn hot (75-90 celsius, which is SMOKY). The 4890 I linked stays around 50-70 under load.

Creston: Does 2GB of ram help a 4890? I would figure that this would be like one of those things where they stuck 1GB on an 8600GTS: Increases the price without affecting performance. I haven't seen reviews of these though. I haven't shopped in a while, but I think $250 for a 4890 is a pretty large premium just for the extra ram?

I thought it you liked the Mets you went with the Jets and Giants went with the Yankees.

Like a lot of kids, I inherited my teams from my dad, who rooted for the Giants and the Dodgers growing up in Brooklyn. The Mets picked up my dad and a lot of other Dodgers and Giants fans left without a team when those clubs went west.

No, not sold entirely on Nvidia, it's just ATI always seems to have driver issues that Nvidia does not. And I do run Vista home premium 64 bit.

Cutter,

Are you absolutely sold on Nvidia? Because I think this one is a kick-ass deal otherwise :

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102847

(Newegg just upped the price by five bucks I see. Way to work with your customers there, fuckos )

Edit : Make sure you run a 64 bit OS, otherwise the 2Gig on this puppy is going to KILL your available RAM in your OS... That's the only reason I haven't bought one yet, as I'm waiting on Win7 to come out.

Vid card question: Now that my GTS8800 is almost 3 years old I believe it's starting to get a little flaky so I'm looking for a new card. Sor of like Goldilocks - not too hot, not too cold, but just right. What's the sweet spot for Nvidia cards these days GTX??? Most I want to spend is about 300 bucks (CDN) and I see the 260's and 275's are that range and cheaper so what's the best value for the dollar right now?

Yeah! Woooo! Fewtball! Go Packers! This is going to be a dynamite year for football - both NFL and college. Only thing I never understood Blue is how you could be a Mets/Giants fan. I thought it you liked the Mets you went with the Jets and Giants went with the Yankees. Then again I guess any New Yorker with his respective salt can and will like whatever the hell they want to like anyway.
