I'm not one to normally go as far as openly complaining about HDR because I think it looks alright if used subtly, but Arcania is a perfect example of too-muchery. How can they possibly think that this looks good? Am I supposed to imagine I've been popping extacy?

i extremely want Risen to be great, but I am not pre-buying after the finger pointing between publisher and developer about Gothic 3

Ditto love to see a great game come out that was like the first two
Gothic games.
That and I hate JoWood so some mud in there face would be nice.

Risen will be released soon, but it won't be "finished" until 143 fan-made patches have been released.

Need to see if there are any other previews that have come out lately that cover things like the combat and magic systems, stealth if there is any, and other important things that I didn't see mentioned in this preview.

For all intents and purposes, Risen IS Gothic. It's pretty much exactly the same as G1/2, only with prettier graphics. That's a good thing, as G1 and 2 were awesome.

That Risen preview was pretty underwhelming.

yeh the review didnt say much, except there are 3 factions, and you are stuck on an island..

which pretty much describes Gothic 1 in a nutshell as well.. i get the feeling they are going back to the roots on this - for instance he mentioned you cant into someones house and just fuck around without them getting pissed at you, which was also in G1..

so im thinking its another one of those "reboot" type games

anyways you can be sure it will be buggy on release, but ill still download it and give it a try before buy - G3 was soooo fucking bad, but then again G1 was sooo fucking good... so ... dunno

Although the Klingon and Federation players will be locked in a war, the game is heavily instanced; all the foes you face will be computer-controlled. It's emphatically not EVE Online.

That is brutally disappointing. Spaceship combat with other players sounded great, I was looking forward to something like Eve's pvp system, even if it was much simpler. Blowing up someone's star ship has been a pretty key point to almost every star trek film or episode....no? I certainly remember the enterprise being in danger from other people's ships A LOT so why wouldn't you want that in your game? This sounds more like star fleet academy combat simulator online. Lets you practice against AI ships all day long!

That Risen preview was pretty underwhelming. I haven't followed it up to now, since I figured anything that Piranha Bytes makes needs all the time in the oven it can get, and I didn't want to hear about early builds of the game. Need to see if there are any other previews that have come out lately that cover things like the combat and magic systems, stealth if there is any, and other important things that I didn't see mentioned in this preview.

The perspective, combat and pace of the game all change completely when you undertake on-planet missions, upping the tempo to an action-game rhythm.

, which allows the game to algorithmically generate new planets, new systems and new alien races to meet." While story content will probably have been designed by the game's artists, other exploration will be generated automatically.

sounds fucking lame as shit.. generic tactical space combat with diablo clone stapled on top?

this would be the only MMORPG ive even considered playing since '99.. but now im thinking its "a big no-can-do" - Buckaroo Banzai™

Arcania looks pretty terrible. Aside from the fact that they presented a demo with no actual gameplay, the gameplay they have shown or described looks like a serious step back for the series. Combat winnable by sheer button mashing? Players can join all guilds and do all quests? Non-open world? Elder Scrolls-style skill progression?

Star Trek Online:
What is it about Cryptic, Net Devil, NC Soft games that all ring out "fail" to me? Shallow? Same look/textures? Just not very well done? Whatever it is, Those 3 groups make games I never want to buy.
