WoW Cataclysm Announced

Blizzard officially announces the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft, confirming the title uncovered by a trademark filing at the beginning of July. The World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Page has artwork, screenshots, and details. Here's the feature list from the announcement press release:

  • Two New Playable Races: Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.
  • Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 85 and earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.
  • Classic Zones Remade: Quest to level 60 as you never have before. Familiar zones across the original continents of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms have been reforged by the cataclysm and updated with new quests and content.
  • Flying Mounts in Azeroth: Explore Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms from a whole new perspective.
  • Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
  • New High-Level Content: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great sunken city of Vashj'ir beneath the sea, and enjoy even more high-level raid content than in previous expansions.
  • New PvP Zone & Rated Battlegrounds: Take on PvP objectives and daily quests on Tol Barad Island, a new Wintergrasp-like zone, and wage war in all-new rated Battlegrounds.
  • Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.
  • New Race and Class Combinations: Explore Azeroth as a gnome priest, blood elf warrior, or one of the other never-before-available race and class combinations.

They decide to leave their shamanistic heritage and follow in the path of the light. It would be no less different than a Christian deciding to become a Muslim, or vice versa.

Christ commanded, "Love your neighbor as yourself," and, "Love your enemies."

But Allah commands, "kill the pagans wherever you find them . . . Fight . . . against the People of the Book until they feel themselves subdued and pay the poll tax," and promises Paradise to those who slay and are slain fighting in Allah's cause (Qur'an 9). Add to that Muhammad's confession, "I've been made victorious with terror," and I'd say it's quite different.

I don't get why people are shocked that they're redoing the old world. They haven't said "no" to that proposition since before any expansions were released, and the old world was solely what was populated. Then after two expansions the old world has been abandoned completely, which everyone complains about to the point of wanting them to shave off the first 55 levels.

There are literally over half a dozen unimplemented zones on the map and even after Cataclysm's release there are multiple unused instance gates. Saying that they would never using the old world again is just naive. They've even been hinting at using Gilneas for months. If you didn't see this coming from a mile away you weren't paying attention.

Basically, the meat of the expansion is 5 levels, a new proffesion, and rated battlegrounds.

The meat of the expansion is really that they're redoing the levelling system in the old world. They aren't just editing the map, they're doing new quests in every zone, even the ones they don't significantly alter. That's likely the bulk of the work. One of the things they really pushed was that the levelling process among the zones will be more fluid, you won't be scrounging around the continents looking for quests. They've also said they're going to make use of the phasing technology everyone praised in Northrend levelling. This is honestly the major thing that interests me, along with Goblins and the Warlock changes.

All three of those have been in-game since release. They obviously had it planned out to be implemented in the future, so why did they blatantly lie to us about revisiting the old world?
It's pretty silly to have never believed that they would never implement Grim Batol or Uldum. Especially when they revealed Grim Batol as the new home of Deathwing in one of their newest book releases.

The rubber band you are stretching broke in the first few sentences. Wargen Druids, defend that one. Ragnaros and Nefarian magically reappearing. Can you say reused assets?

They're tossing lore right out the window with stuff like Tauren Paladins so yeah I'm with the jump the shark crew

This would be jump the shark if they introduced Tauren Paladins before TBC. However with the Blood Elves having been around now for two expansions it's possible more than a few Tauren found the ways of a Paladin attractive. They decide to leave their shamanistic heritage and follow in the path of the light. It would be no less different than a Christian deciding to become a Muslim, or vice versa.

To this day they still have not completed all of the features that they promised for Lich King and this thing is already announced, it's pretty bad when we as consumers support this sort of behavior.

Also, assuming you were right about everyone getting the updated old world for free, this is what people will be paying for:

Two New Playable Races: Adventure as the cursed worgen with the Alliance or the resourceful goblins with the Horde.
While neat looking, this really adds nothing to the game. I would much rather have a single new class than 2 new races. It adds nothing to the game asides new faces.

Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 85 and earn new abilities, tap into new talents, and progress through the path system, a new way for players to customize characters.
Can't complain here, levels are levels. But to be fair, they only raised it 5 compared to 10 in the last two expansions. While I understand that levels are harder as you increase, it wasn't a problem in WotLK.

Guild Advancement: Progress as a guild to earn guild levels and guild achievements.
Really? This is just a pat on the back for raid guilds or casual guilds that can't get together raids. Kind of fun for a while, but nothing to get excited about.

New High-Level Content: Explore newly opened parts of the world, including Uldum, Grim Batol, and the great sunken city of Vashj'ir beneath the sea, and enjoy even more high-level raid content than in previous expansions.

Great, a copy of Wintergrasp.

Archaeology: Master a new secondary profession to unearth valuable artifacts and earn unique rewards.
Let me guess, it will be like mining except with artifacts sticking out of the ground. I won't call it too early though. It depends if it is gathering-based like it sounds.

Basically, the meat of the expansion is 5 levels, a new proffesion, and rated battlegrounds.

I'm not mad at Blizzard, because I'm glad they are revisiting the old world as it was my favorite part. But this expansion just seems weak, and it is strange they would go back on such a strong statement they made. It just seems like a jump-the-shark type deal.

I suppose we should see what it turns out like though, it may be cool, just not cool enough to bring me back to the game.

Don't call me out when you don't even understand what I was saying. Back before The Burning Crusade(not after like I mis-stated above), players were asking for a redone Old World with updated graphics and the ability to use flying mounts. I can't remember if it was Eyonix or Tigole, but one of them stated that they would never redo the old world because it would require too many resources. All of a sudden, they are willing to use the resources to redo it? Why? It's not like it has a ton of benefits anyway, which was why no one made a big deal about it when they stated they wouldn't revisit it. Aside from quicker travel to Uldar, etc., it really is a waste. I'd like to know what made them change their minds, are they running dry on new ideas or what?

Personally I'm not staying away because I don't want my addiction coming back or because I'm waiting for the 'next big thing' to come around the bend.

It's that I'm sick of wow and its crappy ass expansions and poor end game. I don't care how amazing an expansion this may be, I won't go back to it.

Besides, I'm an AoC player and that game is really kicking in and the new expansion announced that looks far better IMHO.

It's pretty weak when you assume without researching. They stated several times yesterday that this change is happening for EVERYBODY, whether or not you buy the expansion.

Expansion adds high level content, new races and areas, etc.

And when it does do you really think theres going to be any high lvl content upon release? Doubt it.

I've had my fill of raiding for a lifetime so I could really care less if there is any high level content or not.

Great, they gave Horde a gnome-like race for everyone to hate on....

On second thought, even goblins could never suck as bad as gnomes. Maybe Blizzard could take a page from Sony - Ratonga anyone? Or maybe Frogloks?

No one comes close, you have people here hyping KoToR but seriously whens that coming? And when it does do you really think theres going to be any high lvl content upon release? Doubt it.

I will pick up KoToR also but for now nothing comes close to the behemoth known as WoW and ill enjoy as much of it as i can until something better comes along thats worth my money.

Yeah, I'm way past my WoW addiction. I'll pick up the expansion and play it for sure, but as soon as I'm max level/run out of new content I'm gone. Same with most every other MOG.

Worgen Druids?

At level 20, do they get the ability to shapeshift into normal humans?

Those bastards. You think you're out but then they find a way to just suck you back in.

It's easy to stay out. While I'm midly interested in this expansion, I have no real interest to play in the current game right now. I have other things on the go and KoToR looks like it may be more interesting.

Besides if I do go back, my mage, and shammy are sitting in T7.5 so I'd have to regear anyway, in a shitty raid. :p

1. Tauren rogue? Or is that still off limits.

No Tauren Rogues.

2. How do they explain goblin-neutral cities now?

The neutral cities are run by the Steamwheedle Cartel, they are a neutral organization of Goblins. Presumably these new Goblins are not members.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Everything else looks cool, I'm glad they are redoing the 1-60 because post BC I hated WoW.

I haven't played WoW since the last expansion and have zero desire to return. That said I think they may be learning their lesson about expansions. The last two have been some of the worst in MMOG gaming. This one appears like it will broaden the game and bring back old content nobody ever touched, though improved etc. The last thing the game needed was another 10 levels and a new continent that broke continuity even more.

But with troll druids continuity has officially been thrown out the window.

The ability to fly around the mainland in Epic Flight Form is the only thing that could bring me back, but it's simply not enough.
