Guild Wars 2 Trailer, Details

There's a Guild Wars 2 trailer on GameTrailers.com as the first sign of the promised news on ArenaNet's online role-playing sequel. The first half of the high-resolution clip is pre-rendered, but striking, depicting all creatures great and small (especially the great ones). The later portions of the clip feature in-game environments and a bit of gameplay. Here is an updated Guild Wars 2 FAQ and a big batch of Guild Wars 2 artwork and screenshots, and there are also details on the game in a preview on Eurogamer and the preview on IGN also has a Q&A with the folks from ArenaNet. Here's a bit of Mike's own words on the topic:
We think of the Guild Wars franchise as the un-MMO, with all of the depth and social features you'd expect from an MMO but without the grind or the mandatory time commitments, and without the monthly fees.

Guild Wars 2 takes the instanced gameplay that allowed us to tell stories so effectively in the original and supplements it with a fully persistent world that provides easy opportunities to find existing friends and make new ones. It takes the flexible and customizable character progression from the original and adds new options, new playable races, and new personalized storylines. It takes the optional competitive aspect of the original and splits it in two, so that it's both more approachable for casual players and more of an e-sport for the hard core. It takes the unique skill deck system of the original and makes it more comprehensible, with a focus on quality of skills instead of quantity.

During the past two years of development we made huge advances to our game engine, adding a persistent world with free-form movement and exploration, day/night cycles, cutting edge support for dungeons and interior environments, numerous graphical advancements including support for more detailed environments and models, better lighting and shadows, new animation and effects systems, plus new audio and cinematics engines, a more flexible combat and skill-casting system, and so on. We also built an array of new content creation tools, enabling us to build a larger and grander world, bring it to life with a wide variety of events always taking place, create more unique and interesting adversaries, and tell stories more compellingly than we ever did before.

There was mention of "all character achievements" being carried over. Do these give bonuses and perks to players? Or are they just a notch in the belt for bragging rights?

I was in beta and maxed out a character with the initial game, pretty much did all the things you could do then wandered off to other games. Haven't played since then so I do not know what they added, or what it does.

Ok, found out what I was concerned with...

Copy and paste from a Wiki:

Heroes are born in the crucible of conflict and tempered in the flames of battle. Their deeds shine throughout history as a beacon of hope to those who must rise to defend the world in ages to come, becoming part of the legend of the land. The legends forged within Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, and the Eye of the North will not be forgotten in the future world of Guild Wars 2.

Your deeds from the original Guild Wars campaigns will be commemorated in the Eye of the North expansion in your Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments will reflect the achievements you earn in Eye of the North as well as those earned in Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall. You will even be able to show off your hall to friends. Then, when Guild Wars 2 arrives, each of these monuments will correspond to special features your Guild Wars 2 characters can "inherit" from your own legendary past, giving you access to exclusive titles, companions , weapons, attire, and miniatures. These inherited items are unique: there is no other way within Guild Wars 2 to acquire them.

Hmmmm

I... eh... ba....

Drool

Hotdamn. I have to say that that looked absolutely AWESOME. I quit Guild Wars because of their initial stupid design decisions, and then by the time they had patched most of those issues out of the game, I had changed email addresses and couldn't remember my password for my account anymore.

So I was a bit "meh" towards GW2.

This now goes on the top of my list. It just looks stunning. That's a gorgeous engine (hope it runs well), and they have an excellent art department. Every time I figured "okay, that's gotta be it!" the trailer would just show another world and another texture set.

Very, very impressed.

So, guys, January 1st 2010 is the release date, right? Please?

Afaik, all you can bring over from the first game is your character names. In case they do let you bring some item, GW is built around tactical PVP so the items are generic. Maximum damage weapons and maximum AC armor can all be bought from vendors in town. It’s not like there’d be imported max level characters with ‘raid gear’ running around on day 1.

I was pretty interested in GW2 until I found out some stuff would be imported to 2, from 1... To me this is not really Guild Wars 2 if you can carry over things from 1. It is just a new coat of paint on an old game where if you have played it all these years get the advantage of that. Not giving people a fresh start may be a mistake. I know I am less excited about this game seeing things carried over from GW1. I need to be convinced it's "no big deal, really" in a factual manner. Then I will argue that if it's no big deal, why put it in at all? Then hear those arguements.

I don't think I've ever gotten the hang of GW. I walk in to a town and have no idea what's going on. I have a few quests, but no idea how anything else in the game works.

You can play GW as if it was a challenging single player RPG. The story won't be nearly as good as a Bioware classic but the game mechanics are pretty good.

A simple description:
You go into a town buy stuff from the armorer, weapon-smith and skill trainer. Then you add your mercenaries (AI) of choice from the "add player options" to your party and press the start mission button. After a cut-scene that advances the story you play the mission and it throws you to the next town. You might be able to play the next mission directly from there or you may have to "explore" (maps are pretty linear) outside to find the next town.

At the bottom of Storyline and missions you have links to the 10-20 towns/missions you have to complete to beat each expansions. The links contain walkthroughs too. Don't read those if you want the game to be more challenging/interesting.

All in all you should be able to get at least 20-30 hours of singleplayer action out of the game.

Hire mercenaries. I've been doing solo off and on over the last .. years. It's certainly not easy. In fact, I feel like I'm grinding everything. I don't think I've ever gotten the hang of GW. I walk in to a town and have no idea what's going on. I have a few quests, but no idea how anything else in the game works.

Not that I play much. I fire it up once every few months, check out my barely-dressed chick, and log out.

The trailer is available on guildwars2.com in various formats, no need to download it from a third source.

I'm a little disappointed by the depiction of the Sylvari in the trailer. After being kept secret since Eye of the North they just seem to look like smaller humans. They are supposed to be the heirs of the druids and be born from a tree...
Now we have 5 races, but 3 of them are normal humans, big humans and small humans. Ok, the Norn can turn into bears and the Sylvari seem to be able to do some nature magic, but i hoped for a little more exotic choice after they introduced the Asura in EotN.
I really hope the technomagic Asura and gun toting Charr don't mess up the fantasy scenario (i hated the dinosaurs in EotN, they were too cheesy).

Guild Wars was pretty fun until you realized how much instancing was put throughout the game. It really made me feel a little disappointed that is was not using an open-world concept but now that they are focusing more on open-world content then I am very excited!

Still subscription-free to boot!

the screenshots look all but the same as the first game. not much graphical improvement. same shitty grass, same shitty trees. same shitty bitmap horizon to hide the size of the level.

the first game set the bar high...
