announces plans to launch a print magazine devoted to World
of Warcraft, Blizzard's MMORPG. With the general shift from print to online
underway, this seems an odd move, especially for an online game, and a $40.00
subscription fee for four quarterly issues seems like a tough sell in any case.
Ars Technica talks to the folks behind this project to explore these issues,
discussing how the magazine is to be marketed
directly at players and issues will be printed on demand.

EVE has a print magazine and it does just fine. I should know because I've been editing it since 2005.

What I can't figure out is how they'll make this work. Most of the younger generation don't read print publications. They read their news and information online because it's quick, easy, and most important free. I can't imagine Blizzard could offer anything of the sort. Between sites like WOWhead, WOW.com, and WOWwiki, not to mention worldofwarcraft.com there's nothing the magazine has that people couldn't find online. On top of all that the magazine will be scanned and spread via torrent.

I finally quit the habit about 6 months ago and even with occasional twinges to go back, i've held fast. But i'm guessing Blizz with give subscribers a deal, like if you're paying a monthly fee, they'll knock off $5 from the mag price. Or pay for a full 12 month acct for the game and get the mag for free along with a new pet.
I don't believe in a lot of things, but I do believe in duct tape.
There are probably enough fan boys around to make money on this. But they won't be getting my cash despite the fact I've been playing since a month after the launch. It just doesn't make sense.
