Napoleon: Total War Announced

SEGA announces Napoleon: Total War (not to be confused with Commander: Napoleon at War), saying the next installment in the Total War series of real-time strategy games from Creative Assembly is due in February, 2010. The Napoleon: Total War Product Section is live with a trailer and some screenshots, IGN has an early Napoleon: Total War Preview, and here's a bit from the announcement, which references the "turn-based campaign":
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (August 19th, 2009) – SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced Napoleon: Total War, the first in an all-new story driven branch of The Creative Assembly’s multi award winning Total War RTS franchise. Napoleon: Total War will keep the franchise’s genre-leading 3D battles on land and sea. The turn-based campaign is split into three different story-driven campaigns, telling the story of the rise and fall of Napoleon Bonaparte through his most famous battles.

In Napoleon: Total War, aspiring generals have the chance to play as the legendary French general Napoleon Bonaparte or as one of his opposing factions. Battling through his three biggest military campaigns, the game will take you through Italy and Egypt, narrating the early years of the fearsome commander, while the third campaign will tell the story of his fateful drive towards Moscow and, ultimately, his showdown with the Duke of Wellington at one of the most famous battles of all – The Battle of Waterloo.

I'm an asshole for being cautious, resourceful and smart about trying games day one to see if I like it? Games that are notoriously over hyped and under patched? While CA does have a great track record, I made the right call in this case.

Funny how being smart and honest is considered being an asshole these days by assholes.

That awesome Smurf, played the game for an entire week and still don't feel you owe them any money.

Still an asshole I see.

Nice, it's a stand alone title and not an expansion to Empire so they can charge full price. Three scenarios like the shitty road to independence is worthless and if it does not include a grand campaign it's garbage. In any case I won't be getting this at full price, CA needs to prove they can fix their shit with Empire before I even consider getting it.

I bought *every* TW game except for Empire. Medieval probably was the pinnacle of the series for me.

I never bought Empire and played the full version for 1 week to see if I liked it. I found it to have the best interface and graphics of the time but as mentioned before the game is far too hard to get organized in. You cannot put notes on any units or buildings stating things like "In 3 rounds build a cannon factory here which will compliment the 3 towns near it". Instead you have to rely on memory. Sure for a 3-4 hour sitting this can be done. Go on vacation for 2 weeks and come back? Totally lost! Start over.

The time period sucks too, where Rome was the best, but I do not fault Empire for this, it is my personal pref.

The ship combat sucks and is boring. They did a great job on it though.

Where is the campaign multiplayer? Never arrived.

Deleted the game, never bought it, never will. This is the first screw up in my book by CA and the Total War franchise. Napolean leaves me flat too. More of the same.

BTW - I have purchased all the Total War Series games starting with Medieval and up to Medieval 2. Don't get off on "Well you never bought it so your review is dismissed" bullshit. The game was $55 bucks everywhere and I thought, and still think, that is a rip off. Glad I didn't buy it because I am a wise consumer that is skeptical of everything.

I was frothing at the mouth eager to pick up Empire for it's naval battles, until I tried the demo, which left me completely underwhelmed.

I formed line of battle, and immediately noticed that the game didn't understand line of battle necessarily, nor the "code of honor" that was expected of naval captains, they were skittish, not very eager to engage, and generally behaved poorly. Still, I battered away at them, demoralized their crew, caused a horrendous amount of casualties, and when I outnumbered their crew 3-1 or so, I boarded them in the smoke. Every ship I boarded had wavering crew and I had the numerical advantage, but somehow every ship that I ordered to board the enemy ended up striking. I still won the battle, but if that was a real battle, a whole lotta post captains were going to get beached for cowardice.

I uninstalled the game and decided that I'd be waiting for a real Napoleonic naval game. In the mean time, I still have Starfleet Command 2. I wonder if there *is* a market for a good tactical/strategic tall ship naval game.

Follow Up Post:
"
First, thanks for buying Empire.

Second, if I may, as we know the fans will have their say and are the last, and most critical line of judgement. Rightly so as they're our customers.

So, as a player, we appreciated your feedback and interest in Empire.

Hopefully you'll feel more challenged with the upcoming release of the new Multiplayer Campaign beta. I'm sure one of our many AI programmers would be up for a game if you're looking for opposition..."

I guess they will be better off playing you in MP than fixing the AI

Pulled from another board:

This is classic,

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407726

You really have to read through right from Page 1 to Page 3.

Page 1. Johan (Paradox head honcho and all round guru) tells it like it is.

"Sorry, I don't have time to talk about our AI atm, but I was not aware of there being an AI in Empire Total War."

Then on Page 3 CA attempt to defend that they "do have an AI"

Forgive me if I cut to the chase, It's not particularly sporting (Or accurate) to suggest Empire 'has no AI'.

I appreciate I may have misread your remark, but I note several other readers have taken it the same way and in two subsequent posts you havn't bothered to correct them, so I can only assume it was your intention to take a swipe at Empire.

If I'm wrong, please do let me know. Otherwise meet me on Hang Man's Hill at midday, the weapon is swords.

As buggy and as-yet unfixed as Empire:TW was, I think I'm done with the series. They keep adding complexity, but without the complexity adding significantly to game play. And that complexity seems to introduce more bugs with every iteration.
