Went to see it yesterday -- it was ok. Personally would recommend anyone else wait for it to hit Netflix.

Minor comment:
At least it didn't have a Hollywood ending -- that always gets bonus points in my book.

A sequel would be cool

But then you can wind up with the Matrix trilogy.

I enjoyed the first Matrix film and really liked its ending; I think as a standalone movie the ending was perfect. Keep in mind, I don't think the film was the "apex of film art" that some people do, I just enjoyed it.

So we had a great first film with a cool ending. Then we had a bunch of lower-quality sequels, where I enjoyed my imagination of what happens w/ Neo and the machines more than what the writers gave us.

I'm fine with an idea "going out on top" instead of becoming a franchise that sours the original concept. I don't need a sequel to my favorite movies... I'd rather remember them for what they were.

The question of "What happens next" can be left to the imagination.

PHJF: If you watch the short film that the movie was based on (it is called Alive in Joburg, it's on Youtube), you'd see that wasn't really jumping the shark. The short leads us to believe the power suits were a major part of the alien culture. Where I felt they came close to jumping the shark was when Wikus decides to help Christopher instead of just looking out for himself. I thought it would have been better if they had just left Wikus as a racist asshole. That also would have made a better setting for a sequel (Wikus outcast by both human and alien society). But it was still an amazing movie.

FatalTourist: A sequel would be cool but I'm afraid it would detract from what the movie was about (a rip on apartheid) and just devolve into a mindless action flick.

I was disappointed it took such a stark turn toward pure action right in the middle. I mean it was "good" action and all, but I wasn't expecting it. Felt like they jumped the shark, especially with the secretMechWarrior/secret.

I had some of the same questions, eunichron. It's not a perfect movie, but I went to with medium to low expectations, and was just blown away with how much I enjoyed it...

Highly recommended.

Remember that the alien technology was integrated with their biology (i.e. the alien guns), so a virus (biological, not computer) could have disabled the ship. And that also explains the effects of the black liquid. The ending was great. It left it open for a sequel, while not requiring one.

Yup. I saw it last Saturday, great movie.

The only odd thing about it was it was pretty obvious that the script was rushed, probably because of the production switch from Halo to District 9.

For instance (hidden text for spoilers):
- How did the mothership become disabled in the first place? As I recall this was never explained.
- What exactly was the black fluid that mutated Wikus? It's obviously some kind of alien fuel, but why would it change him biologically?
- With MNU discredited and (presumably) dismantled, is District 10 as segregated as District 9 was, or do the aliens have more freedom within Johannesburg?
- I did think the ending was fine though. I overheard a few people at the theater complaining that they wanted to know if Christopher ever came back to help Wikus and the rest of the aliens, but I thought the ending was exactly what it should have been.


APOD: NASA should start selling high-res art prints of some of these pictures, they're truly amazing.
