LucasArts VC Games

Computer and Video Games has what may be the old school LucasArts announcement teased Friday. Update: It is, as confirmed on Twitter. They are announcing three games coming to the Nintendo Virtual Console, saying Super Star Wars may be available even as these words are written. Word is: "Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will be added later and all three (which were originally released for SNES) will set you back 800 Wii Points each."

Eh, a re-release of TIE and X-Wing would do nothing for me. I play the games occasionally on DosBox anyway. The same games with better graphics = big whoop to me. Hell, I think the old graphics are part of the experience.

They need to make something NEW. Not release those two oldies for the 5th time.

One of the biggest problems IMO with "remaking" those games is that they probably can't get the interactive soundtracks working right. Not for the money they want to spend on rereleases, I'm sure. The only versions of those games that have the MIDI are the DOS versions. I really didn't like the Windows 9x remakes because of the boring as hell CD audio that they went to. They said iMuse didn't work in Windows so they scrapped half of what made those games awesome. I don't want to hear looping John Williams in place of Michael Land's, Clint Bajakian's and Peter McConnell's work. Even XWA didn't do music nearly as well.

Hell am I the only guy here that bought more than one version of these games already? I've donated enough to that cause....

Go suck on some corporate eggs StingingVelvet...

People are dissapointed and rightly so, and LucasArts are a bunch of blind fucktards if they cant realise that people are aching for a Tie-Fighter revival or at least a re-release, the internet buzz that their anal twitter blogger generated alone should have been enough of a hint....

They realize that you silly bastard! That's why they hinted toward some kind of release from that franchise! The new President of Lucasarts actually knows what he is doing, get off his back!

The whole point is that some Super Nintendo rereleases does not negate PC rereleases!!! They started with PC with some rereleases a couple weeks ago! They have stated more are coming! They hinted at X-Wing and Tie Fighter!

Sit the fuck down and stop crying like a baby.

That was after they'd already stirred the pot by failing to give a straight answer to the G4TV guy. Or more likely, all video games are the same to their marketing flacks; but still, next time they should just not say anything.

And people were still hoping/hinting/guessing Alliance or XvT, and the LucasArts twitterer was still playing coy, when in point of fact the actual announcement was something that people hoping for an X-Wing game couldn't care less about. Speaking for myself, the SNES platformers are a little less exciting than the Atari 2600 game where you shot AT-ATs all day.

Thing is, they didn't tie the two together... an X-Wing rerelease or remake or whatever could still be coming. That was never tied to the announcement today of new back catalogue games.

This spawned from a Twitter comment saying "new back catalogue games coming monday" or whatever... it was not tied to the X-Wing hints at all, and was stated not to be that outright.

So saying you are dissapointed is a little silly... dissapointed they were not more Steam rereleases I could see, I had that reaction myself, but bringing X-Wing into it is pretty silly.

Dude, they said it was NOT X-Wing or Tie Fighter when they announced there would be a catologue release on Monday...

I think the idea is that if you're LucasArts and someone asks you if you're going to announce something new from the X-Wing/TIE Fighter franchise, the correct response is to come right out and say, "No, we're announcing something much, much more lame," or even just "No," rather than holding people in suspense.

Haha. Well, I still have these carts from back when I bought them in the '90s. And in ROM form, of course. Don't really need to "relive" anything here because it's not all that "long forgotten" for me.

These games are about as good as Force Unleased IMO. Take that however you want to but IMO they actually have a lot in common in the gameplay dept. I bet SWFU is not as tough though!!

Super Star Wars, unlike the other two games, doesn't have any saves or passcodes if I remember correctly. That game is masochism. The other two have passcodes but shit ESB is particularly tough.

LucasArts is really on a roll with their usual "make an extra extra buck on paid-for-long-ago IP." You guys know that they've released TIE Fighter and X-Wing 4 times each? That would be floppy -> DOS CD -> Win95 -> Win95 again. The Win9x versions of the games don't work in XP so I imagine that's why they haven't been re-re-re-re-re-released yet. It would cost them money to get 'em working.

They're releasing their old games on Steam for PC gamers... they started with PC gamers... and you guys still give them crap for ALSO rereleasing old console games? Not INSTEAD of, but ALSO?

God.

Anyway, I never liked these games... they were harder than most games at the time, and I remember the slowdown and such from the amount of sprites was terrible.

Sad

I guess this is a typical suit decision. I can see it before me: "Woah! Monkey Island is super successful! We need more classics, quick!". And the fastest thing you can do is slap together some old ROM images and an SNES emulator for the Wii.

They should really take the time and invest in proper remakes...

The SSW games were considered the best of the SNES at the time.
In retrospect there seems to be a growing opinion that they haven't held up and were way overrated.

This doesn't much matter. The game will sell hotcakes on VC. Way more than X-Wing because it's a wider audience. But it sets the stage for more niche.

Announcements I do not mind. Blowing things out of proportion for days is going over board. You don't threaten a legendary game and deliver a pos.

I think the announcement itself is fine but even the mere suggestion that it could be a X Wing / Tie Fighter relaunch was bound to piss people off it wasn't the case. Personally I think LucasArts is still on the right track - their re-releases shouldn't be confined to Steam, or even the PC. But we need new AAA titles and a Tie Fighter remake or sequel would be legendary!

My bad. I was thinking of the NES Star Wars. I don't know that I've ever played the SNES versions(I don't recognize the screenies on google).

Anywho, I'm changing my critique: The NES Star Wars games sucked. I'll play the SNES ones later(though I'm not paying $8 a title).

Still think the announcement was a letdown.

Holy letdown!

Darn, I'm sad to hear this as well.

I guess hope is not lost yet. At the very least they're showing some inertia by releasing older titles little by little. First Steam and now Nintendo's Virtual Console.

So assuming they don't just decide to stop all of a sudden, it's possible they'll get to it eventually.

I guess it depends on what marketing and IT tell them. If marketing says they'll probably sell x copies and IT says it's going to take $y USD to either make the games compatible or upgrade them then it all comes down to whether they think it's worth it.

I guess the VC copy was a no-brainer for them. It's probably minimal effort (if any) to get an SNES game VC-ready.

I agree, the Super Star Wars series on the SNES were highly praised and enjoyable.

enjoyable? I never played them myself but watched a play-through on youtube and it looked frustrating as hell, I can't imagine any kid having the patients to play side-scroller games like these today.

I would imagine this is the reaction you would get.

Woah... hold on. You really thought so? I thought the Super Star Wars games were excellent and so did people in general at the time. They were all very highly rated.

Agreed.

I don't know which ones I really liked, but I recall at least 1 (perhaps 2) of the SNES Star Wars games were very good side scrollers.

Whichever one it was, was near the top of my list. After Zelda, UN Squadron, Super Mario World, and a couple of others.

I'd normally remember the title, but I don't think I actually owned the game. I think I borrowed it from a friend for an extended period (while he was away or something) and rented it once or twice.
