Out of the Blue

We were noticing a few ants finding their way into the kitchen, so we called the exterminator to take a look. When I explained that we occasionally saw as many as a dozen at a time, it seemed like he was trying not to laugh. Apparently we are not infested, nor are we in danger of having our house destroyed by carpenter ants (our house is brick to boot). He did a little spraying outside just to make the trip worthwhile, but he told us we were just seeing little probes from what he called "picnic ants," and he made it clear that if we had a real ant problem, we'd know it.

Really hoping they get it back up and running soon. I'd really like to know if extra dimensions, scientists keep talking about, really do exist!

Yeah, for a dozen it's probably not worth it, though I think having the exterminator out to deal with a dozen ants probably wasn't the cheapest option either.

You could have just killed them by hand. The hive learns really quickly that foragers die in your house, and will stop going inside. They learn that much quicker than humans would.

I always kill every single ant I see with lightning fast prejudice.

Just put a few of the quick killing poison traps out if you see a few ants. They'll all die, and since they're the foragers, the rest of the hive knows that your house is bad voodoo, and won't be back.

The exterminator and I discussed that. Since there were relatively small numbers of them just trickling in from outside, we decided it would be better to try and stop them at the perimeter. Since the traps contain bait, it would actually attract them into the house. If we had lines of them as you say, we would have baited some traps.

After a while to confirm things seem under control, I will replace some of the broken grout that they were getting past into the kitchen, and hopefully have put an end to this.

The trick is to live in a house built in the 1940s (in good shape, of course). This whole neighborhood has so many ants I'm surprised the lawn doesn't get up and leave, but I haven't seen a single ant in this house this year. No pests live in between our drywall because we don't have drywall - foot-thick solid walls just don't give pests a place to go. It makes adding wiring a bitch and a half but it's worth it!
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

You could've saved yourself the money spent on an exterminator Blue. Creston is correct. The traps at the market contain a poison that the ants bring back to their nests and wipes them out en masse. every couple of years they make an appearance here and five bucks plus a week later no more ants.

then again, Huddy might use the traps as a chew toy so maybe you did do the right thing?

As big a coffee guy as you are Blue, I'm surprised you forgot that ants hate coffee grounds. Take your used grounds for the week and sprinkle liberally around the outside perimeter of the house and around any any hills you see and they will pick up house and move away. Did that last year and haven't seen a one of them this year. Plus it's safe for Hudson and the Gunnar-man.

If you've got a LOT of ants walking about, in a neat little line, place a few of the slow acting poison traps. The ants will take the poison back to the nest and kill the queen and all the others as well.

Problem is usually solved in a day or two.

I remember waking up one morning in our dorm to eat a powered doughnut from the day before. Still not quite awake while taking a bite, I recall seeing the powder on the doughnut moving. Didn't think much of it (perhaps the tequila from the night before was still making itself known) til I walked a few steps closer the to window and started to actually wake up. I then realized that the moving powder were ants covered in the powder.

We had ants for a while. Because the back yard is full of 'em, some were bound to try and see what was inside.

I'd go out there, find the line of ants going up the stucco side of the house until they'd reach the asbstos siding, and sneak under it into little gaps into the home. Well, I found that diatomaceous earth (same stuff the use in pool filters) is food safe (for our dog) but deadly to ants that crawl across it.

Just plug the holes with a bit of the diatomaceous earth, wait 3 or 4 days, find the next hole they were streaming in through, and plug that. Repeat for about 8 times, and they showed us all the holes, we plugged them. No more ants. No exterminator.
