Out of the Blue

In a perfect bit of bad timing, the gable fan in the BlueTower has failed, just in time for a heat wave that's hit our area, as it has much of the country, bringing the first really hot weather of the season. The gable fan would probably not suffice to keep the attic cool in the face of these temperatures, but I can usually make good use of it to keep from running the air conditioner constantly. The motor in the fan is not actually broken, I can hear it strain when the fan is turned on, but dirt, rust, leaves, dead critters or some combination of the above are preventing the blades from moving. I imagine I'll be able to clear that up if I can manage to get to the fan, I'm just not looking forward to taking the louvers off to access it, as I am picturing being showered by decades of debris when I do *shudder*.

I love my Vizio 42". Fed by a DirecTV HD HDMI feed, the picture is stunning ....

Yeah, the limiting factor on size is actually the space it need to go into. For that room, the TV would need to fit in an area that will only fit a 40" widescreen.

Which, yes, is really weird when I have been looking at prices. I can pick up a nice 42" or even 44" or some cheapo 47" for the price of some of the 37", 39" or 40" televisions.

It's the same damn radiation.

It's the same type, but the exposure levels are considerably different between natural sunlight and the typical tanning bed. Tanning beds emit something like 4-7 times more UVA radiation; whereas several types of skin cancers have been linked to UVA radiation.

They don't damage, or benefit you, any less/more than the actual sun does.

The actual act of tanning your skin is by definition damaging it already.

If the sun isn't so bad, then why do vampires avoid it? By many accounts, vampires have been around for centuries so surely they would know.

I mentioned moderation. There are rules these companies follow, your exposure in a bed is time-limited and the bulbs are perfectly safe, despite being close to your body. They don't damage, or benefit you, any less/more than the actual sun does.

Yes, tanning beds can cause cancer. So can the sun.

You're a lot closer to the source in a tanning bed than you are the sun.

Tanning Beds: UV
Sun: UV

It's the same damn radiation. If you're stupid enough not to moderate your UV exposure, you increase your risk yourself. It's not the sun's and/or the tanning beds fault. When you sign up to a tanning studio, you don't just hop into the bed for the max 20-25 minutes the studio offers. You start at like 5 minutes and slowly work your way up depending on the bed. A credible tanning studio will also ask you to fill out a survey when you sign up regarding your skin, so they have a decent idea what bed you should use, and for how long you should be using it at first. If you follow the absolute basics of tanning, you'll eliminate the risk of any form of burning, and substantially reduce the risk of cancer.

Yes, tanning beds can cause cancer. So can the sun. They're both hitting you with UV. If you say "you shouldn't use tanning beds" then you should also say "stay out of the god damn sun for the rest of your life". If you educate yourself, tanning (in any form) is perfectly safe. Another scare tactic article which doesn't provide you with anything useful (links to studies etc).

Edit: I recommend anyone with any interest in this do their own research about the benefits of UV, the ridiculous vitamin D deficiency problem in North America (due to among other things, lack of sun exposure) and how much money Sunscreen/Self-Tanning Creams and Dermatologists are making because of the "sun is bad" scare they've put into our heads.

Actually, a lot of people seem to think organic stuff has more nutrients.

Which, somewhat to my surprise, it does. From the article: "A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced crops and livestock"

Organic eggs can contain 4 times the level of omega-3 fatty acids as conventional.

What's with all these dumbass studies of late? Jerks reduce risk of traffic jams? I'd say they're more the cause of them.

And that organic review is just stupid. No one ever claimed that organic foods were healthier as the food itself goes per se, but healthier because of the lack of pesticides and other poisons and chemicals not dousing them as well as being better for the environment (soil, runoff into water ways, etc.) overall.

Who the hell gives these people money for this shit? It boggles the mind.

Dunno if any of you jerks posted or have seen this yet, but if you haven't, make sure to DL one of the HD versions. Whilst seeing pics of the new lightcycles left me very underwhelmed, seeing them now in the context of the film has very much changed my mind. Suh-weeet! I am now officially stoked for this film. Must see this in IMAX 3D!!!

There aren't too many TVs that do 120hz, some of the Sony Bravia and Sharp Aqous come to mind. I have a 42" Aquos and I quite enjoy it. Digital TV still looks like shit anyway you slice it, but HD - particularly watching new blu-ray flicks - kicks ass.

And to relieve any concerns I'm going to fall off my roof, any work I'm going to try on this will be from underneath, inside the house (hence the concern about being dumped with debris).

I have to hire midgets to work in my attic for anything that needs to be done....as an adult just can't fit. I damn near got stuck when I ran the coax and RJ 45 from the basement up the old smoke stack into the upper floor and dropped into the rooms......be careful, make sure someone is home when you are up there.

Sounds like you want a Vizio. Except they come in at 42" at that price point, can you deal with that extra size? Or does it have to fit somewhere?

You can order online at Costco.com or Walmart.com, or you can just go to a local store.

There is a 37" - 1080p one for $570, or you can get a 42" for $800-$900. I'm in the market too for about the same specs, and that's what I'm considering right now.

I just picked up the Vizio 42" for $597 2 weeks ago at Walmart. It doesn't match the quality of my $1400 Samsung - but it does the job for the price I paid.

Anyone know how the input lag is on these Vizios? (which is separate from refresh rate, and is usually not quoted anywhere)

I think so, it's not one of those whole house fans, just a small fan that exits warm air through the roof.

Just replaced my Broan attic fan that had the same problem. Be careful - straining to start can also mean overheating the motor which can lead to pesky insurance claims about a burned down house.
