TF2 Soldier Update Info Leaked?

Total Gaming Network has what they report to be an update that briefly appeared on the RSS feed for the Team Fortress 2 Blog, which if real, is either an error, or proof Valve is now enamored of the leak-style announcement like they joked about after the leak of the Meet the Spy video. They have an image of the story, and summarize the details it provides, including new maps, a new King of the Hill mode that folks have been anticipating, and an item trading system. Popular sentiment seems to be this is a fake. Thanks Mike Martinez.

That thing is a week old and was thoroughly debunked as FAKE on the Steam forums. The original poster even admitted it.

I think that spy "leak" was an actual leak and not a planned leak announcement.

Yeah, I didn't even come close to completing that sentence properly to convey what I was thinking. Dizzy

I fixed it, thanks.

I'm confused as how the new unlock system could make someone want to quit in frustration. There is no advantage to the upgrades, save one: choice. You get additional choices at specializing within the class; for every benefit a new unlock gives, it takes something away. It seems very balanced for the most part, and really none of it is at all necessary to play and enjoy the game. If I were in charge, I'd make all unlocks available to everyone the instant the update was released. I think that would be the best way to ensure everyone has the ability to craft their own playstyle. I've never been one for the "carrot" type rewards system that they use now.

As I commented at the time, if you looked at the original youtube, the wording on the released video on the status board appears to be differant. I think they re-rendered that second of the video to add that bit on the board after the leak happened.

Some people may be wondering why I'm defending valve while I'm critical of them over the whole L4D2 thing. Its because I go based upon what the facts appear to be. In this case, an examination of the source material appears to indicate the whole spy thing was a genuine leak.

See that's the thing... as they've changed the drops for weapons a couple of times and I don't follow the game much I too have nfi how to get the unlocks
You get unlocks two ways: by completing achievement milestones (10 achievements for milestone 1, 16 achievements for milestone 2, 22 achievements for milestone 3, for each class), and random "drops" while in game. That is just exactly what it sounds like, you will occasionally "find" a random unlockable weapon while playing. It really wasn't that hard to figure out.

See that's the thing... as they've changed the drops for weapons a couple of times and I don't follow the game much I too have nfi how to get the unlocks... and it doesn't appear to tell me anywhere how to do it either. This isn't impetus for me to try and 'farm' them either... but rather impetus for me to quit in frustration.

As much as I love valve I think they are slipping more and more since the release of HL2, ever so slowly, what with the episodic jokes (quick my ass) loss of great atmosphere in HL and the L4D debarcle. Portal seems to be the real shining star at the moment with TF2 enjoying a brief spot in the limelight, only to be destroyed by it's own popularity... imo.

Oh well shitloads of other games to play regardless!

A soldier update is definitely in order. I DO wish they would release it with the demo man update; having 2 new class updates (like with the spy and sniper) reduces the problem of having everyone play just one class for weeks after the update release.

Font rendering depends on the browser and the operating system settings
That's my point - the latest "leaked" blog post has a different font rendering than the previous legitimate released blog post. I'm not usually one to pixel hunt, but this stood out to me without the slightest bit of effort on my part.

Also, if you follow the discussion thread on TGN, there's a note that Robin Walker has confirmed it as a fake. If it was a leak, they just wouldn't have said anything.

Hate to say it... but ever since the random extra items came in I just can't play TF2 anymore.
To be fair I've only played it long enough for a single unlock and that was a weapon I already had. It's still great fun the few times I do play it but I just don't seem to be particularly motivated to play it very often. I don't even have a clue how the new unlock system really works, nor can I be bothered to find out. I have much more fun playing GRID online or Street Fighter IV, which probably reflects more on the lack of free time I have for gaming.

@LMN8R - Font rendering depends on the browser and the operating system settings. If it was a fake it would make more sense to edit the .xml file itself than to do it all in Photoshop. The defense/defence observation may be more accurate, though it depends on the nationality of the staff working for Valve - it's not implausible that the screenshot is genuine.

Regardless, I'll wait for the update to come. All the changes listed here sound like common sense, which - as you pointed out - would make the faking such a post rather pointless.

Hate to say it... but ever since the random extra items came in I just can't play TF2 anymore... I seem to be playing the same old vanilla shit while everyone else is having fun with baseballs or something... Unlocks are shit for someone who might only play an hour or two a week...

Is it just me, or does that look like an extremely obvious photoshop?

-Spelling defense "defence", even though Valve is an American company and has never used other locale spelling like that

-The way the text fades towards the top of the letters, as opposed to the previous blog post where the print is very solid

-Various other grammar errors

-The claims of heavy mechanics changes, despite the fact that it's difficult enough to "simply" update classes"

Now the question is....why would someone create a somewhat elaborate photoshop of something that's pretty obviously the case?
