Fallout 3 Patched, Q&As

Bethesda Game Studios Forums have word on a new patch that's automatically available from Games for Windows LIVE for Fallout 3 to bring the post-apocalyptic action/RPG sequel to version 1.7. We've been waiting for a manual patch to arrive, but nothing has happened on that front so far, but the good news is the update sounds pretty small, described as adding new achievements for Mothership Zeta. Thanks Bill. Also, there are interviews about the new Mothership Zeta DLC on Go! Gaming Giant and Talking about Games. Thanks No Mutants Allowed/RPGWatch.

I tried renaming the exe to Oblivion but I still had the HDR issue. I also have another annoying issue where my antialiasing randomly turns off and my framerate goes down. Pretty irritating.

I'm waiting for a patch to fix the SLI/Crossfire issue as well. I'm at work so I can't try the patch, so if anyone with a multi-card setup can test this out I would be greatful.

Looks like I'm not the only one. I gave up and disabled HDR. I *could* have renamed the main .exe "Oblivion.exe" and semi-fixed it, but then GFWL doesn't detect it, so no dice.

Bethesda addressed this issue once before, they claimed that it was ATI's fault and refused to acknowledge it as a problem in need of repair.

The truth? Crossfire makes the HDR cycle too fast between its lowest and highest values, creating that "flickering" you see. It's due to the game engine being outdated and not throttling itself when in the presence of such a setup.

Short answer: Bethesda is a bunch of lazy fuckers that would rather spend their time working on the console version than placating us PC nerds.

Can't wait for Zeta... I know Fallout 3 is not the RPG the originals were, but as an action/RPG of its own I find the game to be quite awesome.

If there's any good mods for it, I'm all ears

Kind of depends on what you want, really. I'd definitely download Mart's Mutant Mod RC 4.0.

FOOK adds a ton of weapons, ammo and armor, but I believe the latest version is quite bugged, so I'd stay away from that.

Fallout Wilderness Edition (FWE) is an overhaul that supposedly "Adds more realism", but all it really does is just lower your stats, AP, damage etc, so combat takes a lot longer. I guess that's considered "realistic" nowadays.
It does add some of the classic Fallout weapons back to the fold (such as the Bozar), so that's cool.

The Darnified UI makes it actually look like a PC game, rather than a console game for blind kids, so that's definitely recommended.

FOnexus does a great job of categorizing everything, so if you want new weapons, or a house mod, or new followers, just skim through their database.

Is this the patch that fixes the HDR flickering bug for SLI/Crossfire users? Seriously, that bug's been around for a while but Bethesda hasn't done anything about it.

Good, I finally decided to dip my toe into the radioactive sludge pool and get FO3. In a few months I'll probably tell myself I should have waited for the GOTY bundle but I found a good offer which saved me £10 so I went for it.

If there's any good mods for it, I'm all ears

Reports on the Bethsoft forum say that this patch fixes the crash on exit that was introduced with Broken Steel. So there at least is something more than just the achievement additions.

I don't really understand why patches are needed to add the achievements considering it should be a built-in facility for GfW, not the game.

That said, I'm probably only complaining because the GfW:Live update process (download the patch IN GAME with a broken 'Microsoft Time' progress bar, then close the game, apply the patch and then nothing - you have to manually restart the game) is so hideous compared too its contemporaries.
