Demigod Patches Planned

A Demigod: end of July status report is live, as support for this action/strategy game from Gas Powered Games hits its stride after a hectic period following its release. The update by Brad "Frogboy" Wardell of publisher Stardock describes plans for a version 1.2 patch for Demigod, a "post v1.1 update" that will precede version 1.2, and even a glimpse further ahead at version 1.3. He also says they have a tentative plan for two new Demigods, saying: "Tentatively we are looking at one general and one assassin. One will be of the forces of light and the other the forces of darkness. One will be melee oriented, the other projectile oriented." Regarding the patch before version 1.2, he says: "The post v1.1 update is expected to fix a LUA decompression crash that some people have run into (and by some people we mean those people get it a lot) as well as some fixes to stats. There may also be some balance tweaks to the bishops-related idols but not sure if they’ll make it in time." As for version 1.2, he says it is due in August, and that they hope to show it off at PAX, offering a preliminary change list, as well as a handful of items "that are being discussed without a consensus yet." Finally, looking way ahead to version 1.3, Brad concludes: "Also high on our list but will probably not make it into v1.2 but likely v1.3 are the Clan Wars. It was decided that getting modding out earlier rather than later was important because in doing so, Stardock itself can start to create maps and demigods to release as well as let players create their own demigods if they want and in a pinch we can take care of the exporting for them." Thanks The Patches Scrolls.

Umm, yes, I know. Which is why I said, "{these} are NOT things one would normally associate with a Stardock-published game.". Wardell and Chris Taylor teamed up for Demigod because both of their companies share similar ideals and goals.

This is a case of a small company being overwhelmed by the reality of the business, imo. A bad launch, crappy networking, and continued lack of demo are NOT things one would normally associate with a Stardock-published game. Did Stardock bite off more than they could chew with this? Possibly. The fact that they are working on it, refunding money without question and rolling out patches steadily at least speaks well of them. That there is no demo is still pretty crazy though.

Stardock didn't dev this, they published it. Gas Powered Games developed Demigod. GPG did okay with Dungeon Siege, and Supreme Commander was fun (albeit dated, it played exactly like Total Annihilation, which is great and all until you realize you needed a beefy computer to play a 15 year old game with 5 year old graphics), but they haven't done anything else that shows pedigree.

I stopped playing this after the 2-3 weeks of daily patching of the game. Every time I turned on impulse I had to sit and wait for the patching process. I haven't even played Sins of a Solar Empire since the patch-a-thon. I probably should have asked for my money back, but oh well.

If a bunch of people have it at a LAN party it could be pretty fun for an hour or so as a "break" game, but really, there's a lack of content/levels/gameplay types that would equate to longevity.

like they got 70% finished and called it a day

Yeah that sums up the game pretty well. The interface especially is downright insulting in it's simplicity and the lack of options is incredibly annoying. Matchmaking was a stupid design choice which was compounded by their need to reinvent the netcode wheel which lost them most of their player base. The game needed at least another six months in the tank not to mention an actual open beta test.

Wasn't there supposed to be a demo for this months ago? By the time they get one out, noe one will care anymore.

As someone who owns the game and has played 100+ multiplayer matches, I still can't really recommend it. The core gameplay is decent, but GPG really dropped the ball in soooo many other areas. It's really disappointing as with more work and more vision, this could have been a great title. It's like they got 70% finished and then just called it a day.

Wait for a demo. There's no tutorial mode, so it's been a pain for me to figure out. Maybe I'm getting old, but it wasn't fun to be just thrown into the game and have no idea what's going on.

No demo = small customer base

I'm tempted to try it, but i'd hate to waste the forty bucks and discover 10 minutes into it that it blows or just doesn't work.

Same... see above. I'd pirate it and try it on GameRanger but the games I bought during the Paradox sale are keeping me busy enough.

It would be a huge waste of money, let me save you some time. There is no singleplayer campaign, period. There are basic problems with the UI which is somewhat clunky itself. The multiplayer issues are largely sorted out but the game still uses far too much bandwidth and is dependent on proxy servers to get people connected half the time. The friends list functionality is terrible, they couldn't even do a cursory imitation of Steam properly, it doesn't interface with Impulse. Finally the gameplay itself isn't very compelling, it's quite basic and while the creep improvements are interesting there's just not enough meat on the bone.

Instead check Heroes of Newerth. It is basically DotA 2.0 with an overhauled graphics engine, new maps, new characters and a simply incredible user interface that's friendly to both clans and individuals. I really wanted to like Demigod but frankly it's a pile of shit and the community dwindles more every day. About the only decent experience I had with the game is that you can get a refund for it, lol.

If you want to check out Heroes of Newerth, I have a few extra beta invites, just need an email address. It's like DotA without the shitty community and has no connectivity/tech issues for the most part. I've tried League of Legends, Demigod and so on. So far HoN is the only really decent improvement on the Age of Strife "Push" style of gameplay.

Anyone played this yet?

Tried it on Win 7? Will it work?

I know the bulk of the issues are MP problems, but is the single player campaign/tournament any fun to play? I'm tempted to try it, but i'd hate to waste the forty bucks and discover 10 minutes into it that it blows or just doesn't work.
I don't believe in a lot of things, but I do believe in duct tape.
