Bionic Commando Pre-purchase Discount

Steam announces sales of Bionic Commando, revealing GRIN's platformer sequel is due on PCs on July 28, which is a couple of weeks after the date recently reported on Eurogamer, though online listings indicate the game is due in Europe on Friday. As is their way, Steam has an incentive to inspire pre-purchases of the game, offering a 10% discount if you pay for the game in advance of its release via Valve's online service on Tuesday. On an unrelated note, I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.

I have to agree with eveyone else, I also picked it up for 20 bucks along with HAWX. I keep trying to get into BC, but there are just so many frustrating things with the game, and 'wtf were they thinking?' moments especially with how the levels are designed and how to keep the player from going outside the map (sorta like Far Cry's Helicopter of death if ya tried to swim around an area).

I will say it still has that beautiful BC theme at the start menu.

OHHHHHHHHHH YEAH!

I will not even have a physical copy, I have to wait for the download, and some questionable long-term ownership issues.

All for the high, high, high price of 75% above console retail! But if you order now, you can only pay about 58% above retail!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH!

.

..

...

Wait. No. Hold on. That's incredibly stupid.

And the sad thing is that I was just looking at this game (for the 360) earlier today. Even though it was only $20, I held off because I was hoping to get the PC version at a similar, if not lower, price.

I am with Yakuza on this. I got the game for $20 new and it felt low quality. I got 10 missions in to the game and put it down. It was frustrating to replay entire levels when you would die or fall in a hole and have to redo everything (including collectables that most games record as being found outside the level loads). Aim in this game is just half baked. You never really feel like you are actually aiming, just pointing in the general direction then spray and pray. The main character says some pretty excruciating immature things as you play too. Wanted: Weapons of Fate was 10x better (Grin game).

While I hate to diminish any sales Capcom might make on releasing this game to the PC, the majority of these comments are aboslutely correct. Bionic Commando is...not a good game. I bought it for $20 new, and I'm convinced I was effectively ripped off. It's a $10 game, if that.

GRIN actually implemented gameplay mechanics that are DESIGNED to frustrate, anger, and otherwise antagonize players. For example, every level has several collectible objects the player can go out of their way to pick up as well as challenges they can meet to receive rewards to their weapons and health, but if the player dies, the collectibles/challenges are RESET, making the player go back and get them again if they want a 100% completion rating. This is compounded by the player character being a complete pussy, with hardly any health throughout the majority of the game.

The swinging mechanic works but is also very weird. Your character maintains the same velocity during the scope of each swing, but at the arc on either end, it's like the character hits a wall of air, and slows to a stop in half a second. Then you swing the other way, and stop again. It's like they wanted to provide the player with freedom of movement, but not too much freedom! It also doesn't help that the levels are all essentially long tubes of terrain the player is allowed to traverse, but if you venture too far in any direction, you're quickly killed by "radiation", which is their convenient excuse as to why the game doesn't feature an open world - the city you're in was hit by a nuke, see.

The story KIND of makes sense along the way but then in typical Capcom fashion they just give up any kind of logical progression at about the 80% mark, zip you all over the fucking place to locations that aren't nearby anywhere you were with no explanation (at one point you're in the city, then in the next stage you're over the ocean, then in the next stage you're in a desert), introduce characters that do important things in two cutscenes and then never show what happens to them, and ends in a non-boss fight/cinematic. And the worst of it is, this game was developed by Grin, a third party development studio. I honestly expected them to develop the game their way and not the Capcom way, but I see that was a stupid thing to expect.

Multiplayer is fun for about 20 minutes, and then you realize it's exactly the same thing over and over and over again, just on different maps. It's a contest as to who can jumpkick the other players the fastest, and who can get to the best weapons the quickest.

The best thing about the game is the music, but that certainly isn't worth the full price.

The grapple looks like it could be great fun in multiplayer, reminiscent of Quake1 CTF.

The Eurogamewr report is correct, Capcom Europe issued a press release on the 17th that Bionic Commando was indeed out.

OTOH, Bionic Commando: Rearmed, the refresh of the original, is pretty badass. Choose wisely.
