NDAs are for protecting intellectual property not about covering up crimes.

NDAs can be about anything, not just IP. I've signed NDAs that say something to the effect of "I will not say anything disparaging about the company or its products." Tipping off the police could fall under this category.

basically it ends with the words "Winter 2004"

Winter 2004 in this case means January to March of 2004. A number of companies (and universities) use this type of quarter naming -- Jan to Mar is winter, Apr to Jun spring, Jul to Sep summer, and Oct to Dec is fall.

At this point, I would be making sure that any/all contracts are stupidly specific and I would make sure everything was writting in blood.

Given his track record, he might not have had any choice. He might have had to concede some of his demands (a longshot, but possible) in order for DreamCatcher to agree to publish the game.

Broadside comes immediately to mind, and most Tribes players would agree that it was one of the best maps ever.

That's odd, because most Tribes 1 players that I know hated Broadside/Blastside. (If I'm not mistaken, it was even removed from OGL as a valid map due to the number of stalemates.)

Also, I played BF1942's single player campaign. Multiple times. For fun, even. Why? Because I'm getting old and curmudgeonry and people piss me off. The AI pisses me off too, but when I complain to them, they don't bitch back

I have no idea where I got Dalton from and now I think of it, except for an average James Bond actor, I can't place the name Dalton.

There is a Scott Dalton, who works at Legend Entertainment (Unreal 2).

*shrug*

Is he talking about the Source engine here, or the halflife 1 engine.

I'm guessing he means the Source engine. Tribes shipped December 98, and Half-Life shipped earlier that year. It's quite possible that development on the Source engine has been in progress since before HL shipped (TF2 enhancements and such).

How easy is it to get a game programming job without a degree?

It's possible, certainly (I don't have a degree). Your best bet is what you've probably heard a thousand times -- write a demo, prove you can code, and just start sending in resumes. Expect to be ignored and rejected by a number of places (yes, it sucks, especially for someone who fears rejection as much as I do).

As an aside, it's not as bad as others make it out to be. It can be, but then again, some of the people who complain about the hours they work (at least around here) are the same ones who take 1.5 hour lunches and play games one to two hours/day.

The Adventure Company is headquartered in Toronto, and since they're the publisher, they send out the press release.

Incidentally, it looks like the game has already been published outside the US by the developer. Their web site (http://www.xxvproductions.co.uk/darkfall/dowerton.html) has quite a few reviews from last year, along with a short demo (10mb).

EB also has all versions for $49.99. And you get an extra dvd with additional content. Ooh. Ahh.

Why the extra memory card? And does anyone know if Freeloader works with SC2?

Didn't anyone read the HomeLan Fed article linked from today's Morning Q&A? While I'm happy to see games being sold on DVDs, the article goes into detail from game developers as to why they still release on CD.

edit:
Hrm. HomeLan seems borked right now. Bleah.

From their forums: http://www5.playnet.com/bv/wwiiol/dg_message.jsp?group_id=8801&parent_id=2399891

Following 1.8 we will also be offering a limited time free trial to anyone via a download. We are also developing a new program for squads from other game communities to have the ability to demo the game as a group at no cost.

The graphics still look a little blah, but I'd definitely check it out if they offered a free trial.

Email address should be good enough, once you've won they can email you and say "Where do we send this to?"

Except that email addresses are easily obtainable. Want a better chance to win? Start making a bunch of hotmail account. Got your own domain with a catchall email address? You can now make as many bogus addresses as you'd like and submit those.

Phone numbers and home addresses are much harder to fake (in that, if you put in the wrong number/address and they can't reach you, they just re-select).

Duh... Sierra doesn't develope games anymore, they are a publisher.

Not entirely true. Yes, Sierra does publish more games than they develop, but they still have at least one internal development team (SWAT: Urban Justice). The Hoyle games used to be done in-house, but I'm not sure if they still are.

Stupid button.

I'm kinda surprised this server doesn't have a redundant power supply, but then again, I have to work in a environment where everything has a backup or hot spare.

Tim Shafer is doing Psychonauts for the Xbox (http://www.doublefine.com/products.htm).

Pretty much any LucasArts adventure game is a good bet, though most are DOS based and may not run very well on current systems (for example, the sound in Full Throttle keeps crapping out on me in XP).

This bandwagon patriotism (which is all I see it as) really gets to me. If you cared about your country, you'd have a flag up every day, not just after something big happens, or people die.

I don't have much to add, other than I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. I've tried explaining this to others, who simply dismiss me as being "un-American".

Something to try and make them aware of whats going on. Even using "message of the day"

Unfortunately, MotD doesn't do much. The 201st server has a MotD saying that people complaining about the long respawn time (120s) will get banned. In an hour+ last night, I saw a number (five? six?) people banned for whining.

Netrek used to have simple "clue servers", which required a user to do something (typically say something to yourself) or answer a question correctly in order to login and play. Might not be a bad idea to implement something like that for other games as well.
