I dunno, when other people do what's described here it's called "terrorism." When the NSA does it it's merely "whatever it takes to safeguard America." Sorry, I don't buy it for a minute.

First of all, this is fiction, not reality. Second, when has the NSA blown its agents up at a busy marketplace or crashed airliners into buildings? Oh wait, that's right, nobody's concerned with what the agency really does (cryptography), they just believe all the entertainment industry BS.

This is the position we want to be in, because it allows us the ability to truly experiment in the area of gameplay development and push the FPS genre forward.

The gamers will be the judge of that (and not the sales, no matter what anybody says). So far there's been nothing special shown. Purdy looking screenshots do not move a genre foward. Neither do cliche-spouting two dimensional (in more than one sense) characters. But I digress. Let's see that finished product first.

He got you. Hook, line, and sinker.

Allow me to draw this analogy:

TAE, you sound like you have no love in your life at all.

Take equal parts teenage cynicism and old age senility, mix with vinegar arrogance, store for 2 weeks in a low-humidity area, and you've got yourself one serving of theAntiELVIS.

Edit: Replaced "vinegar" with "arrogance," cause you know that's what gives it the unique smell.

I just find it funny that he is so burnt out on doing the same thing and then he runs off to Ensemble where they make the same game over and over again.

What the company has done for the last five years doesn't factor into it. It wasn't him working on Ensemble's games.

He was referring to the original DOOM. He didn't "dig it" so he wasn't very interested in doing this new DOOM that id is working on.

I don't like the idea of buying software and then never actually owning it.

Legally, you don't own any software you buy. What you buy is a license to use the software, and that license has limits. The only entity that actually owns the software is the entity that created it.

Subscription makes sense for games that require something from the vendor, (i.e. Everquest), but valve doesn't run all the servers out there. They will be making money off of the people who work hard maintaining their own servers for their friends.

No where does it say that using Steam will be required. It's an optional service that you can use (by paying for it, of course) if you want to use Valve's neat little gizmos - the Tracker thingy, automatically downloading new patches so you no longer have to whine about FilePlanet's Soviet-era queue system, and so on. If you're fine with what you've got now, nobody's going to be asking for extra money from you, as far as I can tell.

They weren't taken at the same time.

From the SpecForce site:

Shidan describes the pictures as:

One screen is from a b-17 bomber high altitude, the other is taken from the ground at the same time... they look absolutely gorgeous.

As for the tail of the plane, take a look at this image (mirror it of you have to) and imagine the pilot banking the ol' bird several degrees to the right.

http://history.acusd.edu/cdr2/WW2Pics/82129.jpg

That's exactly what you see in that second screenshot.

How is the B-17 at high altitude if you can see the very end of its tail in the second, low-level shot? Looks like it's flying pretty low to me (*cough*engine limitations*cough*).

Huh? Did I miss something? Has Valve been secretly billing my credit card every month for "maintaining support" of HL? And here I thought that I just paid one time, about 3 years ago, and was still getting tons of goodies and freebies and updates. Silly me.

I think it's fairly obvious that copies of Half-Life that continue to be sold in fairly significant numbers (for a three year old game) aren't sold just because of the standalone game on the CD. Valve's effort to support their community and their game over the last three years (and counting) is a big factor to their bottom line, at least as far as selling copies of Half-Life and now Counter-Strike (soon Counter-Strike: Condition Zero) are concerned.

Wow, the Global Operations demo is sure to be a treat. Released on a Friday (probably late afternoon West coast time), on FilePlanet (who would've thought the Soviet breadline would make a winning comeback in demo distribution?), and playable through GameSpy Arcade (one of the worst, if not the worst, server browsers out there - long live All Seeing Eye). I just can't see how this can get any better. What's next? Embedded spyware?

Valve cant win either way.

Valve ARE winning by making crazy monies off of "maintaining support" for their only released game Half-Life. Of course that level of support and the competence of the support can be argued (everybody's got an opinion, right?), the fact remains that they are making money and well in the black. And I am certain that Valve doesn't care what people think of their policies so long as it keeps making them money.

Valve have been and continue to be winning.
