"INTERESTING FACTS
The working title of Thunderbirds was International Rescue.
Thunderbirds was named after a US Airforce base in Arizona where Gerry Anderson¹s brother learnt to fly.
Derek Meddings, special effects ace on Thunderbirds, went on to work on The Spy Who Loved Me and Superman, for the latter of which he won an Academy Award.
The first episode broadcast was Saturday 2nd October 1965 and the last time it was seen on terrestrial British TV screens was in 1993 (BBC 2) and in 1995 on satellite television (UK Gold).
The Thunderbirds musical score was composed by Barry Gray. Gray, who had previously worked with the likes of Eartha Kitt and Vera Lynn, used a 70 piece orchestra for the theme tune to Thunderbirds Are Go!¹ (1966). To create the suitable futuristic space sounds, in pre-synthesizer days, Gray used the Ondes Martenot, a French Instrument developed from the Theremin which produced sound oscillations which were controlled by a keyboard.
Gerry Anderson worked with Dire Straits in 1991 for their Calling Elvis video using Thunderbirds puppets in non-speaking roles throughout the video.Thunderbirds also appeared on MTV with the M.C. Parker single THUNDERBIRDS Are Go!! a remix of the theme tune promoted with a video of snippets from Thunderbirds episodes.
Thunderbirds took a theatrical turn with The Thunderbirds F.A.B The Next Generation in the late 80s. The highly successful show originally ran at the Mermaid Theatre London but later toured both nationally and internationally.
Despite popular speculation, F.A.B doesn¹t stand for anything more than a truncated form of fabulous¹, fab¹ being a popular expression in that era. Suggestions for possible acronym meanings include Filed, Actioned, Briefed and Fine Acknowledged, Broadcast.
In the episode Attack of the Alligators real crocodiles were used with he RSPCA present and in full support!
Characters
Supermarionation is a puppetry technique involving marionettes with extremely fine wires and electronics controlling the puppets¹ lip movements. The technique involved a solenoid that transferred an electronic pulse to a wire attached to the bar that moved the lip inside their heads that synchronised the mouth movements with the vocal tracks.
The actual marionettes were between 20-24 inches tall, and were originally made from wood and leather (used as the hinge on the moving lip) with fine tungsten wires. For Thunderbirds, the puppets were made out of fibreglass, with rubber used for the mouth hinge, and metal parts used in the electronic workings inside the head.
The five Tracy brothers are named after famous American astronauts:Scott Carpenter, Virgil Grissom, Alan Shepherd, Gordon Cooper, and JohnGlenn.
Lady Penelope appeared recently in a dream sequence in an episode of comedy Absolutely Fabulous with Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley.
Suave Scott Tracy, the eldest of the Tracy boys was based on Sean Connery, while Lorne Greene (Bonanza) and Anthony Perkins (Psycho) formed the inspiration for Jeff Tracy and Brains respectively.
The voice of Scott Tracy, Shane Rimmer appeared in Stanley Kubrick¹s classic film Dr. Strangelove.- Actor David Graham voiced Brains, Parker, Gordon and Kyrano.
