drivelsadvocate: "Nice move Mark Rein. Instead of approaching the author of the piece, he chooses to ridicule them on an unrelated site."

They spread the misinformation widely by posting it, and allowing other sites to link to it. Rein spread the correction widely to the whole audience that had seen the misinformation.

Well, it seems that UGO still hasn't taken down or corrected this preview. If Mark Rein hadn't gone out and posted the corrections no one would know what to think.

You can say what you want about Mark, but he sure pays attention to what's going on in the community. Pretty speedy reaction.

I can understand a site writing previews when they haven't been given any new information by a company

I'm sure that Legend would have happily provided this info - it's not that they haven't already talked freely about these aspects of the game. I'm totally convinced that the preview was written from memory by someone who has heard some stray facts about Unreal 2 and mixed it up with some other games.

Nice one UGO!

In (at least) four or five years, though, when millions upon millions of people have later generations of these phones that can play decent games, I definitely think that will start to become the primary form of handheld gaming.

I don't think so, at least not until we get direct brain-links to control mobile devices. Gaming requires convenient means to control the gameplay. For most games that means that you need to use both hands, one on a control cross, the other on triggers. Cell phones become smaller and smaller and are designed to be operated by a single hand. How many games can you play well with just one thumb?

I see the cell phone gaming market in the "casual" sector, i.e. games that you can play for a few minutes but that get boring quick because they are so limited.

What, pray tell, do they use to build their army buildings?

By the ancient rules of comedy, the building the guy fell towards was the Army Pillow Storage. Of course he actually landed in the building next to it :).

He should be thankful that the piano and the safe that came after him missed...

The double standard on a lot of gaming sites perplexes me.

Are you referring to BluesNews? Did you ever see any news here about how to pirate games or music? I haven't.

But then again, maybe you were only speaking generally.

Hello everyone, the hotmail account is simply there for our security.

Hmmm. So you can't give people your domain name because of security reasons? How about just not putting up "secret" material on your website or protecting it in a private area? Relying on the fact that no one knows the URL for security is

1) not secure at all
2) not of an advantage if you want to convince people that your are really "professionals"

Here's a tip: if you really want professional developers you need more than just a "hey we're great, please work for us" message. If you cannot give out project details (not even the genre??? Must be pretty revolutionary!), at least put up a website describing who you are, what you did before, etc. You know, "the best" don't exactly have problems finding a job in the industry nowadays and they are certainly not desperate enough to send their resume to every guy who can put up a hotmail account.

Just my 2 cents...

Blue, the NBA Live FTP link is buggy, as it contains slashes instead of dots in the domain name. The real link is:

I have this other device that saves me from getting speeding tickets. Its really quite simple. You know, like a clock but it doesn't show the time but how fast you're going. And then, a few years back, I discovered those signs that show you how fast you can go without getting a ticket (can you believe how dumb those cops are? Telling you exactly how fast you can drive to circumvent the whole system and avoid speeding tickets! I laughed all day when I found out!). Anyway, what I do is, I just make sure that this device (I call it the "speed clock") is not showing a value higher than the numbers on these signs. It really works! Hard to believe, but it does!

Make all characters in all works of fiction, be it a novel, movie, or video game Anglo Males.

They would also have to have no jobs ("they implied that all lawyers, plumbers, policemen, ... are evil!!!").

Oh and no hobbies ("waaah! They implied all golfers are evil!!!").

Hmmm. No personal preferences either ("The villain likes blue cushions! I like blue cushions and I find that offensve!!!").

And he cannot do anything ("He ate a steak! They implied steak-eaters are evil!!!").

Oh, and he's not allowed to look in any distinguishable way ("He's got a beard! But bearded persons are not all evil!!!" and of course, "He doesn't have a beard! They imply that only bearded people can be good!!!").

So what you can show is a blank screen. Not a black screen, of course, because that's offensive.

Blue, it seems that the Praetorians demo is a leaked version and not an official release. At least that's what Eidos seems to have told Gamers Hell. From their site:

Removed due to Eidos AND Pyro S. Requests, turned out to be an incomplete, unofficial version of the demo.

I believe that a number of the games in the genre have had mouse control. Heck, I believe that Wing Commander had that in some/all of the games.

Yep, I know that for sure because I bought my first PC joystick after having tried to play Wing Commander 1 with a mouse.

And thanks for that Chris Roberts link! Hopefully he's more happy making films - though I doubt that it is much different on the business side than the game industry. Maybe it's just the larger creative freedom (i.e. less technical difficulties) that he likes better about creating movies.

Here's hoping that he'll come back some day and create another one of those great story-driven games.

Hmmm. I just read the interview completely (only skimmed over it the first time) and was a bit surprised to read that Chris Roberts is not involved anymore.

I haven't followed the development of Freelancer much beyond the beginning of development, but wasn't Chris the project lead on that one? What became of him?

Did he found another new game company? Or is he only doing Hollywood movies now (or whatever that Wing Commander thing was %))?

I could swear this was originally supposed to be an MMOG and the concept sounded so exciting

Yeah, it was. In fact, IIRC StarLancer was meant to be some sort of offline-version of the game (kind of like a fail-safe design as a backup or stepping stone) while FreeLancer was going to be that much more ambitious space MMOG using some of the StarLancer technologies.

And I agree about the mouse-only controlling. Unless they have found some really cool way for implementing this I doubt that it will feel like a space sim. But, sadly, I think it will actually sell better because of it. The average mainstream gamer just doesn't have a joystick anymore.

Hmmm. Now that I think about it - since Digital Anvil is owned by Microsoft there will surely be an XBox version, right? So they will have to implement gamepad control and maybe it makes its way into the PC version as well.

Howzabout a version that lets us get out of the fighter and walk around, like Mafia or GTA3 but in space

Now that you mention it ... Privateer was very much like GTA3 in space. Not because you could walk around (you couldn't...only switch between 2-3 screens on planets) but because it was built in a very open way. In fact, the way missions and the storyline were handled was almost exactly like GTA3.

Talk about GTAIII *introducing* this sort of gameplay :).

Man, this thread got me thinking about WC2 again. Was that a cool game or what? I just couldn't stop playing because i NEEDED to know how the story would go on after the next mission

[EDIT] For all you young'uns who don't know the classics - WC2 is Wing Commander 2, not Warcraft 2. Should be pretty obvious by the mentioning of a story, though :).

Uh, I'm a little confused by all those LOTR games that were announced recently. Which one, or rather, which genre is this?

3rd person action adventure? RPG? FPS? MMORPG?

And yes, you may call me lazy for not wanting to search for the games website :). But Blue didn't post a convenient link (shame on him!) and I really can't be bothered to google myself, can I?

Freedom to Spam Oct 25, 2002, 09:16

That freedom of speech argument is pretty flawed. Would it be considered ok to drive through the streets all day and night, playing advertisements at a very high volume? No, because this would violate other people's freedom to be undisturbed in their own homes. Even worse, if the ads were played loud enough to drown out normal conversations, wouldn't it be called an assault?

SPAM mail has exactly these properties. They are a disturbance of your personal live and violate your right not to have to see advertisements all the time. AND they occasionally cause legitimate email to be overlooked or deleted in error because the subject line looks like SPAM (at least that happened to me a few times).

Having said that, I doubt that passing laws to prevent SPAM will have any effect. The internet is international and Spammers would only have to send their mails from some other country. There are already some Anti-SPAM laws here in Germany (giving you a right to be removed from mailing lists on request) and they have absolutely no effect.

I guess the only hope we have is either the development of accurate SPAM-identifying email filters (close to impossible) or the creation of international Anti-SPAM laws. I cannot see any of these happening in the near future

Wow. Mightily impressed with that Doom anim. Somehow they managed to capture the feeling I had when I first played Doom. Great stuff.

Hopefully there will indeed be a followup. They still have quite a lot of levels left
