You missed my point. My point was that you should be able to disable hardware virtualization in VMware without uninstalling it or changing your BIOS setting so you can test Hyper-V.

There isn't a way to disable hardware virtualization in VMWare as a whole (at least not that I know of), it can only be disabled per VM.

And even if you could, you would no longer be able to run 64-bit guests. HW virtualization is required for 64-bit guests.

And even if you didn't want to use a 64-bit guest, if you try to install Hyper-V when VMWare is installed, Windows will not let you.

And even if you could MAKE windows let you install the Hyper-V role or change the install order (Hyper-V THEN VMWare), most likely you would have to do a bunch of crap to prevent it from crashing.

Putting virtualization in a consumer OS like Windows 7 and 8 and then not being able to use it for any applications which use Direct3D or OpenGL is just pointless. A server can get away with only running 2D apps, but a consumer PC can't. Even business applications like many of Adobe's products have 3D functionality. Microsoft has no excuse for doing that especially since it develops Direct3D.

Except to do work.

Besides, in order to install Hyper-V, you would need Pro or higher:

Actually I've now read online that you can use both at the same time if VMware is set not to use hardware virtualization mode.

Then there really is no point to trying it out. Hyper-V won't install if you don't have virtualization enabled in the BIOS (at least it didn't in Windows 2008 and 2008 R2).

Without HW virtualization, you'd need to have a real monster of a machine to get good performance out of a VM. If it came down to that, I'd just build a super cheap Windows XP machine with a somewhat modern graphics card and install old games on that.

I've also now read that Hyper-V doesn't support hardware 3D so it sounds like it is still basically just Microsoft's Virtual PC product integrated into Windows 8 which means it is useless for games.

Yeah, I don't think Microsoft is going for the legacy gaming market with Hyper-V. I think what they are going for is server consolidation (Windows Server), testing and backwards compat (Windows 8).

Well what the hell are you waiting for?! That's the only reason to use it.

Do it and report your results.

As I said, its a 'one or the other' kind of deal with Hyper-V and VMWare, so I'd have to uninstall VMWare to make try it out.

I'll try to do something with it this week and let you know how it goes.

The Hyper-V performance in Windows 8 RTM is quite nice, although I haven't tried to run games in it yet.

You won't be able to install VMWare 8 and Hyper-V at the same time, which is to be expected, so you'll be forced to pick between one or the other.

Holy crap how much porn do you guys need to watch at one time?

As many as we want!

What's really cool is spanning a video across all four screens, which gives you this huge area, but you have to sit back a bit to enjoy it. At that point, it's almost better to turn on the the 32" and stream the video on that.

Your image reminds me of one the things which really annoys me, that you can't set different backgrounds for different

I'm actually running a screensaver across all 5 screens. I use DesktopFusion, the free version lets you set different desktops on each screen. The paid version lets you run the same screen saver on each screen or different screensavers on each screen.

I have that 32", but there is a reason it's 5' away from me. It's fucking hot. Don't get me wrong, the four screens put out a decent amount of heat, but not as much as the 32".

Six screens, one desk.

Big deal. I have 5 (possible 6) hooked up to one PC.

2 x Dell 2007 WFP
2 x HP L2045w
1 x BBY LCD (32" Dynex Flat Screen)

I have two graphics cards:

ATI Radeon HD4200 (On-board, supports 1 VGA and 1 DVI/HDMI)
ATI Radeon HD4600 (PCI-x, supports 4 x DVI)

I would be ok with this if games weren't 60.00. There are VERY FEW games that have enough content to be worth that much. Every year they pump out less content per disc and more DLC.

Isn't that the truth.

That's why I think this whole 'not playing used games' is crap. We get less and less content every year for our $60.

The only consolation we get is that there will be DLC, which is generally released right after launch and/or there is occasionally some stupid achievement or trophy for playing through the game more than once.

Providing it keeps good games coming and especially if it keeps game developers employed, I am OK - but not happy - with:

Getting nickel and dime'd on the DLC.
Paying for an 'unlock' key as long as the price is reasonable.
Paying MORE for a game.

I am NOT OK with all three combined. Even IF it keeps devs employed.

Do your worst AT&T. The more customers you drive away, the better I'll feel.

Thats right. I dropped my AT&T account because my Android's 'unlimited data' on Verizon is still unlimited and hasn't increased in cost.

I have bone to pick with Verizon about my aircard, but thats another story.

You mistakenly think that Microsoft wants a distinction between the two. They don't want you to rent a game or buy it used, they want you to buy it new.

I don't think Microsoft is pushing this, I think its coming from the publishers. They have been bitching about the used market for years. I guess they are not big fans of capitalism!

But to that point, you are correct - they don't really care if its rented or used, they want you to buy a copy of it since thats where they make money.

I don't see how this is Microsoft's problem to address in the console since its really a problem the publishers need to solve.

Besides, this is total crap anyway. It would be like OEMs preventing PCs from running pirated versions of Windows.

Or even better, like Apple preventing beige-box PC from running OS X.

Call of Duty- Modern Warfare 3 Xbox disc read errors.

I wonder if this problem will hit me...I have 4 Xbox 360s (its a long story), so it should be easy to find at least one that can read it!

//Start Rant

OMG! They are going to <something awful>!! I can remember when gaming was <nostalgic comment>. Those were the good old days. I won't buy <game title> from <publisher>. <Publisher Rep> is such a <vulgar label>! <Rival publisher> would never do this, they care about their customers. I'll just buy it used from <Store that sells used games> and not give them any of my money. Assholes.

<something awful>: If we put up with it, we make it acceptable.
<nostalgic comment>: No, it was never that good. Playing online was slow, games didn't automatically update and LPBs made the rest of us hate life.
<game title>: The next awesome game to come out.
<publisher>: The biggest publisher with the most money to throw out for the next awesome game.
<publisher rep>: The <vulgar label> who thinks <something awful> is a totally neat idea.
<vulgar label>: Use your imagination!
<rival publisher>: The 'other guys' who would screw us too, if they thought of it first.
<Store that sells used games>: The place where you will buy the game used for 10-15 USD off full retail only to discover that you need to buy some 20 USD DLC to play the game.

//End Rant

Seriously, since everyone (including myself) doesn't like these folks reaching into our pockets for more money, why do we even buy the games? Is it going to make our lives any better that we dropped 100+ hours into the game?

At some point, the amount of money that they are asking for the experience just isn't worth it anymore.

Edit: Fixed a spelling mistake!

Is connecting to WiFi from Windows really as hard as MacDonalds claims?

Having written pages and pages of documentation and knowning that you end up documenting on your own machine, I wonder if McDonalds uses static IPs for WIFI.
