Most of the filesize is taken up by new maps for the two new gametypes included, not bugfixes.

I'm hoping they will fix the journal in a patch, although the expansion looks good.

Why on earth would you forgo an Out of the Blue? Yes, the terrorist attacks were a horrible, tragic event, but curtailing your regular activities seems an admission of defeat to what happened. The world continues to turn, people continue to live, life goes on. Don't diminish the memory of the ones who died by caving in to the sentiment that the day must preclude normal activity. Take the time to remember and honor the victims in your own way, of course, but censoring your writing on the anniversary of the attacks hardly seems a fitting way to do it.

The only unusual part of the T2 relaunch will be the price -- around $10. It's actually quite common for games to be relaunched with added content and that's what's happening here. Comp mod, Team Rabbit 2, over 20 new maps and a final all-in-one patch will make for a pretty good package from what I saw. The idea that Fast Attack being cancelled is a bad thing has been grossly overstated. While Aerial Assault is a fun game, I doubt shipping a console-ized version of Tribes for the PC would have helped Sierra.

The council was a lot of fun. Sierra has given its full support to a future Tribes game, T2's got some great new content coming out soon. Begone, negativity!

Tribes 2 ran great for me under Windows 2000. In fact, most of the Dynamix dev team worked on Win2000 machines, so I seriously doubt the OS is the problem. It might be ZoneAlarm. Try running the game without it as a test. You may at least be able to confirm that it *isn't* the problem. Spyware can cause T2 to barf, too, so look for any hidden apps lurking on your PC.

Yeah, Ghost Recon is one of the few games that can legitimately claim "Game of the Year".

BTW, these press releases are awfully slow. I've seen GR GOTY out for probably a few weeks now.

Blue, I think the list of best-selling PC games is strong enough to stand on its own as a separate new item (as Homelan treats it). Plus it would probably inspire more comments that way. Maybe even stuff beyond "Die, Sims, die!"

Three words: OH MY HECK!

And yeah, the info was pretty obvious. It was interesting to see how T&L being turned off improves FPS, though. Anyone know if the beta patch for DS improves framerate above the original version of the game?

Snapcase, regardless of what you think of the game itself, when Myst came out in 1993, the graphics were actually quite breahtaking. No PC game had ever seen such lavishly detailed environments before. The main appeal of the game, I think, was the looks and sound (also very effective) and the mellow nature of it. Stroll about, enjoy the view, solve some puzzles. It was very easy for casual players to jump into.

Still, trying to turn that same thing into an online persistent world is just bizarre. I can't see this one succeeding at all unless it really departs from the solo games and in that case, they're just slapping on the name Myst to sucker people in who liked the original. Hooray for the game biz!

Blue and Frans, I wouldn't bother linking to content that requires a paid subscription. It's really not of interest to the general gamer population since you can't see it without, well, paying. And if you are paying, you presumbably don't need to read about it on another site first.

You've hit the nail on the head; this is what I was saying in my early posts (before all the B5 crap started). And I _STILL_ don't understand why a game that failed to meet its sales targets by a wide margin, is getting a budget to get patched - when Sierra is already in a financial bind... *sigh* *shrug*

T2 still sold well over 200,000 units and while that may be short of the lofty vision Sierra had, it's still enough to qualify the game as a hit. Maybe Sierra thinks the patch will help keep interest and focus on the game and ensure goodwill for Tribes Fast Attack coming out in the fall. In other words, they may still see value in the Tribes franchise and if that's the case, it makes sense to treat the people currently playing T2 well, as they will be the most likely to provide word of mouth on any future Tribes titles.

Would the game have been so buggy if Sierra had given them more time to actually finish it? These same people also produced Tribes and a host of other games that had no major issues. Or does that suddenly not mean anything because it doesn't fit into your bitter view of things?

Just wondering.

Geez, Blue, I'm not a big fan of the Might & Magic series of games, but even I think this story deserves a lot more than a late mention as a mere "etc." item. The Might & Magic and Heroes of Might & Magic games have been very popular and some big events have gone down concerning the company behind their creation.

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

To be pedantic with Blue, the game is called Tribes 2, not TRIBES II. Have a look at the official website: http://tribes2.com

The re-release is not a bad idea -- it shouldn't cost Sierra much money, but unless they have some truly dazzling new content, who is going to pay upwards of $40 for a game you can already find for as little as $10 in some stores? Not only that, they are still negotiating, after nearly SIX months, with a "mystery" developer on doing a final patch for the game. I wouldn't be holding my breath.

Tribes 2, we hardly knew ye.

Most patches for FPS's will invalidate saved games. This patch actually warns you about this and gives you the option to back out of the patch, at least.

There will be another no-CD fix in due time. Patches also tend to make those stop working because the game .exe gets modified. And yes, the MoH patch destroys CD drives and eats babies, too. Like most patches. Except it worked fine for me. But I don't have any babies, either.

Legend has already put a lot of work into the multiplayer and there is no compelling reason for them to drop it except Epic wants them to do so in order to convince people to buy both games. It's a pretty crass strategy. Epic is effectively punishing the consumer because they made the dumb decision to greenlight two Unreal games at nearly the same time. Plus, the precedent for multiplayer support was already there in the original Unreal. What if people don't like or want UT2? Why should they have to buy both games? How many other single player FPS's have shipped that did not have ANY multiplayer component?

And Spab, Legend already said there will be no co-op support in Unreal 2, so you won't get that, either.

It seems that people aren't bothered by the decision, though, so I guess Epic made the right call. More money for them, I guess.
