I ABSOLUTELY wanted to see BioWare fail. and they did, and it was awesome to see. extremely satisfying.
let me explain: I've never personally been quite so perfectly affronted by a game as I was with this game's redundant, cringely base and obnoxious gameplay. I was and sort of still am extremely disturbed by 'Veilguard' and what it represents being the first title in a decade from a classic franchise known for its depth, wit and imagination.
if you go into a room with an *extremely simple, lazy* puzzle, one of your constantly babbling quip-happy moron friends will screech out both that there's a puzzle AND how it should be solved. in moments. Ubisoft may hold the record still as the LEAST audience-trusting game developer, but this game sent them to work.
same thing as 'Sewerside Squad' - linear, dumb, repetitive and DEEPLY obnoxious jokes from your lamentably lame companions throughout. or when you, your party and the world itself is in danger, everyone's always crackin' jokes so the mood never gets SCARY or anything. in the first new Dragon Age game in ten years.
BioWare took a look at how games have changed in the last decade and concluded they're dumber, simpler, never thoughtful or tense or challenging, someone's always either joking or explaining what to do and how, social grandstating e v e r y w h e r e only nothing vital or new or biting to SAY about it ... fully one of the least enjoyable game experiences I've ever had. fully. and if THAT'S what BioWare's wanting to do to the artform, hell YES I want to see that fail. publicly, embarrassingly and constantly.
I hate it because I care about not just what *I* get to consume in our culture's art and media but what the next generation gets to see and look forward to. kids these days have to play THIS?? ----ing BARF, man. I hate it because I care what happens. I hate it not to try and destroy something just to destroy it, but to destroy something that is absolutely actively harming the most vibrant and most promising form of popular art there is. Dragon Age Veilguard is just about the perfect poisonous antidote to the sprawling, wonderful, freeform and brand new experiences offered by Baldur's Gate 3. nothing gained, only taken away and made dumber than possibly ever. "No, dumber. DUMBER. WHY ISN'T ANYONE MAKING A JOKE? IT'S BEEN 30 SECONDS. Also, I've been looking for this so-called puzzle for six whole seconds. What gives? Is this DRAGON AGE or DRAG-ON AGE? Give goal now!"
