All the contrary. This news just screams "just don't spend your money on D3 yet and buy our product in a couple weeks".

My point wasn't about this news entry specifically. But how Valve maintained a high visibility all these years whithout producing much if any content. And even your point underlines mine because hype is often generated more by/with the community rather than by developpers themselves. Best example is when last year HL2 was announced suddenly people started praising Valve as the new savior of PC gaming.

I agree Doom3 may sound like the typical overhyped product, but id has a proven track record. Valve only ever produced one full commercial game and that was six years ago. I don't know them enough to judge them, but I just find impressive the fuss a game developper can generate without releasing or producing internally any actual full-fledged game in six years
I haven't followed HL2 closely (beside the whole 30 sept fiasco and the hacking affair around the same time) but, watched from far, it looks like Valve is incredibly hyped, even more than their game, considering that until last year they didn't even had a game. Which doesn't mean HL2 won't be good; but it looks like the painter gets more light than the painting he's doing. And that to me is not the way it should be. But maybe I just
Doom3 is very hyped too but at least the game is more hyped than the company producing it. If you look at id during the Q3 days and now things have changed a lot. These days they give lots of interviews, publish videos, etc but they just advertise their game. Five years ago it was the Quake3 bus tour, 'inside id's intimacy' articles, we knew all about their lives etc.. Maybe that's just me, but I find they had more of a low profile these last years. Some of the hiring even went almost unnoticed, five or four years ago that would've been different.

While this particular news isn't from Valve itself you gotta hand them that it's quite amazing how much they can get the newspapers to display their name on a daily basis even though they released their only commercial game Six freaking years ago.

What is worst: yet again a new Myst clone or yet again a new WWII based FPS?
At least in the first case there's only one of these games every few months. I think I have seen a new WWII FPS (or asimilated) every freaking week for the last 12 months...

Aaah.. Myst vs The other 2,000,000 other "gamers" who are SO superior.. it's been my favorite fight for 8 years now.
Wait, no.
I've been playing all sorts of games for 15 years, the two ones I spend the most time with on my PC being Quake and Myst.. But noooooo some people can't help but feel like Myst is the deformed bastard child of video gaming that you have to throw stones at while screaming...
Some things just won't change no matter what.

Beside this, congrats to Cyan for getting it done, it's been a long running project and I can't wait to see it public.

It's fun to see that Myst and DOOM, both genre-defining games though very different, were done at the same time.
(And are now both seeing a sequel now too..)

I was about to post something smart and objective about the porn actresses / hooker debate, but Moog Operator beat it to me.
There are both legal and moral differencies. As to know if being in any of those positions (no pun intented) make them sick bitches is irrelevant. you can't judge someone just by his/her job.

Just adding my voice to the "give Blue a hand" bandwagon. A subscription system or Paypal account would definitely drag quite an amount of people. For sure being forced to resort to that kind of things to keeps the boat afloat pretty sucks, but hey, when you have people whiling to help, why hesitate?
In the mean time, well I know I've came here for years for free when other sites were already subscription based or ads-filled, so I can probably tolerate a small click once a day.

I recall playing "cycles" on SGI platforms

Cycles! how could I forgot this one I spent hundred hours playing it on the O2 at university
Though I think I spent even more time playing 'Pointblank' the tank/planes game.. You could chosse among two different tanks, light & heavy, and a plane, and we were doing dogfights all the time it was a really cheap game but it was fun as hell.. The graphics weren't that impressive (especially for a SGi station) but the steady 60fps framerate was really nice at the time.
God, we spent much more time playing on these stations than working our Softimage and Irix skills

Rolleyes at some comments..
I find this very refreshing to have at least something new in the MMOG genre.
Who said that Massively Multipalyers Online Games had to inevitably involve low-polygon knights in a more or less fantasy-related landscape fighting trolls endlessly? They're just games that are played online with a lot of people.. The Sims Online is the best proof of this.
Yay for diversity in tastes and in games!

this really sucks to no end. Outcast was a truly outstanding game and they seemed to have a bunch of talented people down there.
Outcast 3's development had been put on hold a few months ago officially to 'pursue new interesting opportunities'.. you can say want you want from this now.
Tis a sad news indeed.

the point is that some people just can't change their mind, fps are cools and "mIst is the Sh1t".
I've always been a huge fan of both id and cyan's games so I know this argument upside down. People who don't even try to listen to arguments (valid or not) aren't worth wasting time and energy.

No if you'll excuse me I still have a gory Doom3 video to download, and a boring Mudpie website to update. [/sarcasm]

it's nice to know there are actual myst fans here.

no, but if you're among the one to have registered (for free) at Gamespot for the E3 coverage you'll see a video that's 1:40 long, that's nammed the 'official trailer' so it should be available outside of Gamespot soon.
First impressions:
I have mixed feelings about it, on one hand some of the images are truly awe-inspiring and on the other hand some things are really plain cheesy.. Like "look a plastic robot with eleotronic stuff glowing in the dark". So I think it has a lot of potential and as a Tron fan there's no way I won't buy it when it's released, but currently.. mixed feelings.
