So, no EA or Origin bs? I see that EA's name is still mentioned.

The big three are now, in order, Tencent, Sony, Microsoft

Actually, that's only for gaming revenue. Supposedly Microsoft dwarfs Sony otherwise.

Well that's one way to get a new CEO.

The only news about this acquisition I care about tis the one where Microsoft send Bobby scumbag Kotick packing.

You realize that he's gone, right?

Reportedly, the new agreement guarantees that Kotick keeps his job.

I'm not sure all this industry consolidation is such a good thing.

I've no idea what this merger will do to the supposed cleanup at Activision/Blizzard. I'm not sure if guaranteeing that Kotick keeps his position is really a good thing for that cleanup.

I'm interested to see if the new anti-merger regulatory trend in the US government will do with this.

Unreliable Science in Media as Peer-Review Breaks Down

Half of the science news in the media is already garbage even without issues like fraud or errors. Basic logic flaws on the part the reporters are actually the biggest flaw.

Correlation is not causation. "Scientists have discovered that most people who stub their toes say 'ow'. OMG, saying 'ow' causes people to stub their toes!"

Even many of the science news sites are like that.

Gifts of DNA tests are leading to more family surprises — and lawsuits, lawyers say

The article focuses on fertility clinic screw ups.

A much bigger issue that wasn't really dealt with in the article is the supposed fact that (from the last numbers that I saw years ago) up to 10% of children don't know that daddy isn't really their biological father. Often daddy isn't aware of this either. I haven't seen any numbers about whether nonpaternity is decreasing now that home DNA testing is becoming more common. However, that number was always under debate and may be as low as 1 to 5 percent.

A side issue is that some medical genetics studies don't double check. That can make a real mess out of the statistics when they're looking for hereditary DNA traits linked to a genetic disease.

Edit: I looked it up. Best guess now is that nonpaternity is at about 2 or 3 percent. It has been dropping for decades. Especially after contraception became more widely available.

Speaking of browsers, for the last week or so, about a fifth of internet sites are refusing to load if a VPN is turned on. It's snowballing and getting worse each day.

Seems to be IP specific. Switching access points will fix it once in a while but not usually. Luckily Blues worked after switching.

If this keeps up, I wonder if it will lead more VPN providers to install anti-abuse measures. Lots of trolls, spammers, scammers, DDOSers, search result ranking flooders, and others use them. Seems like there might be possible tools to try and scan for at least the flooding and DDOS attacks without violating user privacy.

I'm glad the Mint issue turns out not to be as bad as it looked at first. I already had Ubuntu go to the dark side while I was a user. I'd rather not have to find yet another Linux distro.

I heard that in addition to the Twisted Metal game reboot, there's a Twisted Metal TV series coming.

Anthony Mackie will play John Doe “A smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives”. Sort of post-apocalyptic. He has to deliver some mysterious package past a bunch of marauders. Including a certain ice cream truck-driving deranged clown.

I'll give that a shot when it comes out.

Hmm. As the Tesla leans on its horn, it could automatically raise a robotic arm out the window with the middle finger extended.

Tesla adds assertive self-driving mode

I wonder if it will also lean on the horn a lot. Maybe they could add an external speaker so the AI could offer other drivers helpful insights as to possible cross-species shortcomings in their parentage. Possibly the speaker could also blare out illustrative helpful analogies of the other driver's intelligence or sanity.

I saw an article a few months back about someone at CNN who got access to the Tesla full autonomous driving mode and took it to somewhere outside of the carefully fully restricted and pre-defined test areas. Namely, the center of New York City. The guy ended up shrieking and yanking control back about every other block to narrowly avoid accidents.

Tesla refused to respond to any questions from CNN after that.

Interesting. I wonder if they could also add a virtual Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Edit: Huh, A reviewer said that it has an Arduino interface. The reviewer also mentions something about Garry's Mod Wireview mod.

Fish rained down on a Texas town this week

In Texarcana, no less. Texarcana was one of my favorite series from the old Heavy Metal. A weird western with lots of supernatural.

Happy New Years, all.

A weird foreign Christmas tradition was missed in that previous list.

In Portugal, lampreys (those scary parasitic eels with the huge ring of teeth) have been an expensive delicacy that many people couldn't afford..

Somehow, fancily decorated pastries decorated to look like lampreys became a Portuguese Christmas tradition. Odd egg and sugar based ones.

I may have a partial fix for any future mechanical failures in space. During the old shuttle launches, they would often have issues such as the robotic arm jamming. The engineers at mission control would all huddle around in their Hawaiian shirts and try this and that which often didn't work. Sometimes an astronaut would just suit up and go out and smack the malfunctioning part with a wrench or mallet

In engineering terms, this is called "percussive maintenance". What we need is a specialized bot up in space with a mallet attachment. Or, maybe a kicking attachment. If all else fails, Smackbot could just fly over and smite any malfunctioning bits. What could possibly go wrong?

I always thought Harlan Ellison's story 'Repent, Harlequin!' Said the Ticktockman would make a good film or game. I heard that he shopped it around Hollywood as a film but it never got made.

It seemed like something that would be right up Terry Gilliam's alley. I wonder if Ellison ever tried pitching it to him.

A little silliness, gleeful mayhem, and frivolity mixed in with Ellison's usual dark nastiness.

Plus, he left so many of the details vague and the story was barely novella sized so someone adapting it could really go to town with creative license.

There are Steam videos of the developer's other RTS, Syrian War. The videos for that aren't bad.

The Terminator game might or might not be like their previous RTS but I'm guessing that the publisher and movie studio picked them for a reason.

On the positive side, the Terminator developer's other RTS is said to have good mod support. I heard it also focuses on realism and doesn't have construction and resource gathering etc. Ammo and fuel are also limited.

Slitherine is the publisher. Slitherine was also the publisher for another humans vs robots game. Battlestar Galactica Deadlock. Although that was done by a different developer group. Battlestar Galactica Deadlock is a great game, by the way. I like their skirmish mode better than their campaigns

Pretty easy to learn the basics and a very intuitive interface.

They really ought to update some of the first videos on their Steam page. Those were from an early alpha version that looks and plays nothing like the final version. Ships are rarely all bunched right next to each other like that. Galactica base game shows up pretty cheap during Steam sales. Definitely worth checking out on sale.

In the Terminator multiplayer game, can one side play the terminators or can players only control the various competing human factions?

They really ought to let us play as the terminators. You human meat-bags had your chance.

I'm a little more surprised that the movie studio gave that choice of developer an ok. Movie studios are getting even more risk-averse than game companies when it comes to controversies.

Not that I like their risk-aversion.

Anyway, I can't really fault them for going after at least one side of the Islamic extremists. Although it is largely backed by another faction of Islamic extremists in the whole Sunni vs Shiite mess.

The second sentence in the Bluesnews article:

Slitherine announces Terminator: Dark Fate - Defiance, a real-time strategy game based on the most recent installment in the unkillable Terminator franchise. This is in development at Cats Who Play, and the game's Steam Listing says it's "coming soon."

I found it by going to the Steam page for the Terminator game and clicking the link for the developer to see what else they've done because the two videos here don't really show much game-play.
