Facebook scrambles to escape death spiral as users flee, sales drop.

That new demand to log in before seeing just about anything now is a disastrous move. They might as well just put a big "Go Away!!!" landing screen.

Shenmue's animated series has been cancelled.

HBO also just yanked Blade runner: Black Lotus

I hadn't watched any of the rest of the list of animation stuff yanked by HBO but Black Lotus wasn't bad.

Midjourney doesn't use either of those datasets ( LAION-5B and LAION 400M ).

It also has content filters.

Some interesting questions do still remain, though.

If you have a Discord account (or are willing to sign up for it), you should definitely try Midjourney out before everything gets yanked into limbo by assorted lawsuits. You get 25 free tries with Midjourney and then if you want more it's $10 per month for 200 sets of pictures. Each set defaults to either 4 smaller pictures or 2 medium ones.

I find that Midjourney tends to give more artistic results. However, it sometimes doesn't have the degree of control that some other AI art programs do.

I've found several tricks to get better results. One of the top ones would be add the words gothic steampunk to your request.

Requests are easy and basically like doing a Google search. Except that the AI just makes something up that matches your request.

However, knowing a few key phrases tend to give you better looking and more accurate results.

I've gotten hundreds of incredible looking pictures from this.

On Discord, just go to the Midjourney newbie forums and type /imagine and then some words describing what you'd like.
https://discord.com/channels/662267976984297473/976997370132848640

After you've used up your free 25 requests, you can sign up for more at Midjourney.com

Oh, my.

Sort of a more incoherent version of Devil Daggers.

People should check out Devil Daggers. A bit like this but slightly more grounded and apocalyptic. Countless creepy demons coming after you.

One easy tip for Midjourney is just add the words steampunk, gothic, zombie, or words like that to your idea.

Or, more controversially, add the words in the style of H.R.Giger

Anyway, try it soon because there are countless lawsuits brewing over the massive internet-scraping image training sets that were used to make these programs.

Artists begin selling AI-generated artwork on stock photography websites

Well, they're getting it accepted to a few sites like Shutterstock but I'm not sure if any of it is actually selling and earning any money. The woman who made the Youtube video on how to try and sell on shutterstock hadn't actually sold anything yet but it had only been a few days. It certainly may be possible.

I have to say, I'm having an absolute blast making stuff in Midjourney and some of the other AI art programs. There's a good chance that lawsuits, liability fears, and other issues will bog it down or restrict it soon so people might want to try it while it's still unrestricted. Sort of like the early days of internet radio stations.

Many, like Midjourney let you start out for free and make several images. It's also pretty easy to use and and easy to sign up for. However getting good stuff often is a matter of learning a few tricks that tend to get neat stuff (or just some luck).
https://discord.com/invite/midjourney

For Stable Diffusion, you don't even need to sign up. Just go to the website and enter a bunch of words like you are doing a Google search. Wait 5 minutes and get 4 images. Not as neat as Midjourney but still cool if you get lucky. But the site is free.
https://huggingface.co/spaces/stabilityai/stable-diffusion

All Midjourney needs to start is a Discord account. You can make 25 sets of images (probably 100 pictures) for free without signing up or anything.
Just pick one of the newbie subforums and type
/imagine
And then a bunch of words describing your idea. Sort of like doing a google search, except the AI will just make up something new by combining your terms.

Over 60 Feet Long – Scientists Discover the New World’s Largest Omnivore

Krill feeding sharks aren't the only ones that eat seaweed. Bonnet head sharks are like regular carnivorous sharks except they also eat sea grass. They're only about the size of a person or large dog, though. They look like a cross between a hammerhead and a regular shark.

Yeah, actually Stephenson collaborated with graphic artist Tony Sheeder on Snow Crash. They originally planned on making it a computer generated graphic novel. I always wondered if that was the reason for a few of the lighter, sillier aspects to Snow Crash. I'm not sure how much influence Sheeder had on the original tone.

Actually, Gibson wrote a script for a sequel to the original Alien. The studio ended up not using it. The script is still out there online, though.

With a lot of the earlier cyberpunk writing, a lot of took place as thoughts in the character's heads. It's hard to translate that well to screen. Sort of like some of the early hacker movies. Just having someone tying away on screen doesn't do much for the audience.

Study Finds That Testosterone Promotes “Cuddling.”

I've seen people who started taking it turn into very nasty, abusive, bullying people. Also serial sexual harassers. They should warn people about it more and not prescribe mega-doses. I've seen people ruin their lives after they started on that stuff.

There is a lot of contradictory information about it but what I've seen personally is pretty bad.

William Gibson's sci-fi thriller, The Peripheral, coming to Amazon Prime

This should be interesting. Usually Gibson's stuff works better as text than as a movie. This might work out better.

I never did hear what happened to that Snow Crash adaptation that was supposedly in the works.

I'm curious what a Diamond Age adaptation would look like.

Well, I may be in the market for a new laptop

You've probably done it already, but try removing the RAM chips one at a time and see if it halts the problem. They tend to get cooked easily, especially during heat waves. Oddly, those memory tests don't always detect some problems with them.

The weirdest and hardest to track down problem with a laptop was when the battery started conking out. I wouldn't advise taking a laptop apart, though, unless you carefully mark down exactly how every last bit goes. Some laptops are a real nightmare take take apart and put back together correctly.

Next attempt is scheduled for Friday.

Arg. That crack that they found was also a little disturbing.

Some called it stupid, many called it genius. Introducing the Oscar Mayer Cold Dog

I've heard of people trying to make bacon vodka or martinis. It usually just ends up tasting like hot dog water.

Also, I heard Walmart used to carry individually wrapped frozen microwavable deep fried Twinkies. I'm guessing in the health food section.

Still waiting for the really cool and freaky dino find of a complete Gallimimus nest area.

Although most dinosaurs had somewhat small brains for their size, some of the big-brained omnivores had brain encephalization quotients that were almost off the charts. A bit lower than humans but much higher than present day animals (even chimps). Even higher than dolphins. Plus birds tend to have smaller neurons with more connections so they manage to pack in even more brain power than expected for their brain encephalization quotient. That's probably what allowed most other dinosaurs to have relatively small brains for their size. The quotient has to do with brain size vs body size.

Then, right when their brains reached max size about 70 million years ago, that dinosaur-age ending asteroid hit.

Hah, can you imagine them finding evidence of simple primitive tool use in a complete nest area?

Heck it wouldn't even have to be Gallimimus. There were a variety of other omnivorous dinosaurs that also had extremely high encephalization quotients. One of the broadest of those other groups also tended to have the very long complex finger-like digits.

I wonder if many colleges have policies allowing students to get quick extra forgiveness-eligible student loans to cover computer purchases. I've heard of other things like matching funds or the university covering the first x-many dollars. Not sure about extra loans.

For any final year students who haven't reach their loan forgiveness max, that could get interesting. They'd probably be pressed for time, though. I'm not sure what the time cutoff is.

Heh, I can just see one saying "Let's see, I just went back to school again for a few quarters due to COVID and I've got about $12,000 more before I reach that $20,000 max so..."

I'm guessing there would probably be a cost ceiling though. Otherwise, gosh, that motion capture rig sure looks nice...

Eh, it was better than I expected.

I would have at least given season 2 a try.

I could have done without the teen drama part.

I had sort of low expectations. I liked the books but the novella the new series was based on sucked. The whole thing was basically like the last episode of Game of Thrones.

The new series was at least better than I expected. I'll stick with it before making up my mind.
