The genre tends to be called "cozy gaming" - initially popularized by the likes of
Animal Crossing,
The Sims, and later
Stardew Valley. Most of them are marketed as relaxing, non-violent, open-ended "life simulations". This new Tolkien game certainly appears to fit into that description, based on the trailer. Given the popularity of
The Sims alone, it's probably safe to say there's a sizeable demographic for this kind of game.
