Snark aside, it`s really kind of unfair to compare microcomputer library to AAA titles from big studios. Most of the rubbish you describe were from bedroom coders - because indie gaming did not start in 2006 like some would like to believe. Plus, it`s kind of easy to knock them these days - but back then it was so novel people didn`t really have such problems.
And AA/AAA - hell, even B/C games from 80 and 90s were incomparably better compared to the pathetic fare on display these days. Games are about gameplay, not the polygon count. Studios like SSI, Microprose, Looking Glass, Black Isle, Shiny, Electronic Arts/Ubisoft/Activision (hell yeah), iD, Japan too - and countless others delivered killer, innovative titles by the numbers - and they were also free of the modern cancers known as online DRM, stupid DLC and microtransactions.
You can go on and prattle on about nostalgia and how everything is better nowadays but it is simply not true. How I wish it was...
