This has to be a joke. It HAS to be. My 80 yo dad backs up the 58000 photos of my little sister playing in a swimming pool locally and on servers elsewhere in the world. But we don't think about preserving culturally important music?

You do not make money off culturally important. You only make money off Copywrite claims. That's all they will ever give a shit about.

You know, I work on an army base and there is surprisingly no fanfare anymore about it being 9/11. I got one email about it from some department head and nobody else mentioned it. Guess it's going in the bin next to 12/7 and 6/6.

9/11 has turned from a solemn remembrance of a national tragedy (though not an unforeseen one) into a day of the year where what is most seen are liquored up hillbillies screeching "NEVAR FURGIT" while waving flags and posting memes of a crying bald eagle. Plus the added dash of Islamophobic racism. A recent poll showed 23% of Americans don't have any connection to it since they weren't alive when it happened 23 years ago. For them, 9/11 has as much relevance as the Vietnam War does to Gen X or World War 1 does to Boomers. It's just something that exists in history books. You mentioned December 7th but does anyone on your base pause on the 15th of February? Probably not since not only is it the wrong branch of the service but it also occurred so long ago that it's just another date. Another decade or so and 9/11's relevance will be just as meaningless to an even larger portion of the population because Gen Z will be adults by then, almost all the Boomers will have died off, and a full third of Millennials weren't that cognizant of it in the first place as a "I lived through that" event since they were quite young at the time.

Nobody mentioned it during work today, either. The mood wasn't any different than it would be on any other Wednesday. The usual kvetching, memes, and jokes happened as usual. Most of the places I visited online today didn't mention at all and it was also business as usual.

You are correct as I posted below my opinion on it as well.

I recall working on the night the day in happened. Was reminiscent of the first days of Covid lockdown. So quiet at work you could hear a pin drop. The few customers we had were solemn and quiet as hell. We mostly sat around till 6am just staring at the ground not sure what to think.

I will not forget that.

9/11 has become a distant memory to me now. Between the years gone by and living outside the US, it has steadily lost meaning.

However that should never under state what a world changing event it was. Thanks to some religious fundies causing so much damage we have a massive combined federal law enforcement agency, unprecedented civilian spying, and stupidly over secured plane boarding.

Not to mention a mobilised citizenry that boosted enlistment, helped Bush and his garbage cabinet invade 2 separate countries. And lead to the longest foreign country occupation by the US in history. Which in turn lead to TFG making a deal that basically reset everything the US did in Afghanistan and the deaths and injuries of US soldiers meant nothing ultimately.

It may be reduced to a slowly fading memory, as with all tragedies, but the effects and changes to our lives that we now have shouldn’t be forgotten.

I bought it yesterday, played through the intro\tutorial mission on Veteran difficulty. I think I am going to restart the game on one difficulty lower, even though Veteran is the "Recommended" difficulty, at least for my single-player playthrough. The movement is simply too clunky and unresponsive to warrant the frustration. I think I died about 10-15 times before I finished the mission, you get stun-locked ALL the time and once you do, it's game over. The worst part is, that if they made the movement-dodge-parry-attack system just a little bit more fluid, this would not have been a problem.

To be fair you are running around in bulky 1980s inspired power armour, that looks as chonky and clunky as it can. But I understand where you are coming from on that.

Hurray for Roadmaps!?

That is what you do for a 10 year? I should try that with my wife. Hey Wife, I know its our anniversary so instead of buying you something or doing something together, I instead put together this Roadmap of vaguely scheduled promises.

That would go over well.

The whole "Ban Tik Tok" thing is bullshit of the floating world driven by fear of young people getting their politics from unsanctioned sources. Media interest in it subsided when the ban became real, because it's a censorship mechanism that was suddenly warming the hairs on some of our own necks. And in the absense of relentless coverage of the politicians calling for it, public interest subsided too.

I'm all for Meme videos and commentary's, humor and funny moments caught on camera.

The problem with this thing is when this whole machine starts driving politics. And driving politics of younger folks who follow influencers for their politics. Those influencers could be well meaning reporters or people with legitimate concerns or more accurately, popular grifters. Who will do hot takes and push garbage narratives in favor of getting more engagement stats to increase a creators bank account. And then those same influenced people vote and will happily vote against their better interests because some grifter on TikTok told them to.

The world is in a rather shitty place when you consider what could easily happen here and what's happening in other countries.
Looking at you Germany with your recent election where the far-right party came in first in Thuringia and second in Saxony. It was the first time that the far-right party won a state in the country’s postwar history.

The TikTok influence is strong here. And we are coming off from one of the most dysfunctional government coalitions in ages here. People are turning to reactionaries in an increased rate.

Sucks.

I do not think you are a full on victim of disinformation. At least not totally. On some level you wanted or needed to hear what you are being told and used it to reinforce the world view you want(ed). And thus regurgitate it to your followers. For personal gain or to influence the election, or both.

F'in, Tim Pool is such human garbage as well.
