I know it's clickbait, and I agree that budget rigs are a strong part of what makes PC gaming so great, but I feel like hyper focusing on this issue is stupid, especially when it affects the consoles as well and it won't last forever. From my perspective, 2021 was the worst year for PS5 and Switch gamers, not XBOX or PC.

Are people quick to forget all the great titles and game pass? What's up with these articles declaring "2021 was worst year for gaming"? Clickbait quota really that low?

I was using Signal with some friends and family, but we eventually switched over to Matrix because having self-hosting servers is a must have. Plus all the bridges and other features are just awesome.

I remember several years ago the pain of getting games like Borderlands 2 working, having a separate WINE prefix just for Windows Steam, and the lack of DirectX 10 and 11 support. WINE (which is what Proton is based on) was good, but now with SteamPlay and Valve backing Linux and CodeWeavers, it's such an amazing time to be a Linux gamer. A lot of the time, "it just works".

Kind of a shame they are going to just ignore Code: Veronica, that was the last one from the series I played and it was great. Resident Evil 4 never really appealed to me, always felt like they turned their back on what made RE what is was and turned it into a meh third person shooter, and Max Payne had already done that much better. Plus the entire game's setting just looked dull, but hey, that's probably just me.

I should probably clarify, I'm not against the remakes being in third person, it's just RE4 didn't seem like survival horror at all.

It's sad how many negative comments there are on this article, clearly a lot of ignorance regarding who Phil Spencer is and what he does. His recent statements and decisions are important in this industry, and yes, he's a fan of Steam, even convinced Microsoft to bring PC games to Steam, and owns a Steam Deck. Shocking, I know.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft or consoles, but I am amazed how many of you are just rushing to shit on the man so blindly, especially on a statement like this.

That TF2 update is interesting because it apparently will help server hosters (like potato.tf) avoid DDoS attacks. Sadly there are people who waste time and money on something so petty, so I hope this patch ends that nonsense.

It's pretty interesting and weird this is the same series as those flashes I played what feels like a lifetime ago. The appeal of the series to me was how'd you spend your time in between zombie hordes, whether it be looking for ammo or survivors, who would then be part of your crew till the end (if they themselves didn't die).

Might give this a shot, but man it seems so different.

Restored original behavior of centerprint, sprint, and bprint built-ins to fix issues with mods expecting arguments to concatenate instead of a string format

I'm glad they're addressing some of these compatibility/protocol issues our engine developer (and presumably others) brought up with id. One of the only real major gripes left is the modified base game data still conflicts, so I hope that they will address that as well.

...Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi is parting ways with SEGA.
I was afraid of this, from what I understand he wasn't involved in the last couple titles that much, so it might not have as big of an impact, but we'll have to see. Either way it makes me sad

First, you're in the minority. For those people that still care about the old Quake community, there's still old Quake. This has not erased that. Very, very few people that would have gotten into the old Quake community in 2021 would get into this. If anything, this will lower the bar for playing Quake in 2021 enough that a handful of people that otherwise may have never checked it out may check this out, love it, see the old Quake community, and decide to go there. But this is unlikely to fracture a community from 1995. As with most remakes, the hardcore old style people will remain there, and this will attract people that never would have wandered there. Two very different audiences.

Second, you're addressing a separate complaint. I was responding to the "Oh, so no one creates anything new anymore!" complaints.

Sorry I misunderstood the original intent of the comment, that was a mistake on my part, but since you did reply, I suppose I'll respond back:

Minority in the sense that new players won't care about any of the problems I wrote? Most likely, but there are limits to this version of the game. Most won't ever care, some will. Not to mention if this remaster ever loses support someday, people will have to flock to open source ports again for maintained versions of the game.

That being said, my main point was that this had a lot of changes done in an unnecessary way (there are many methods to enhance content in Quake without breakage) causing a lot of work on us when that aspect didn't need to happen (conflicting base game data means no online play in most cases FYI). None of this is unsolvable, it's just a bit weird considering they used our community tools (which is actually pretty cool for the record) to make parts of remaster, so they must know about us, what we do in the community, and the problems we would have with such an approach at the very least...

I'm sure they had their reasons, I also get this is for people even younger than me and not for 25-55 year old video game boomers like my father and I who won't rebuy Quake. I just feel the approach could've been better and they could've worked with the community, instead it feels like they worked against us in some ways. Oh well, it is what it is, at least more people get to experience Quake.

Xylemon, I don't have enough *thanks* for the mod artists like you.
Be it engine modding, stories, graphics, etc.
You have enriched my world with hundreds of incredibly good stories and adventures.
Many mods and conversions I found superior to the original games (Quake, Doom, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and Vegas, and dozens more).
Arcane Dimensions, Enderal, The Underground, Black Mesa come to mind inmediately, but so many more.
Modders are rockstars to me, please, never go

Thank you for the kind words, modding was very influential to me growing up, with some of the mods you mentioned having inspired me over the years, so I always felt like giving back. I couldn't imagine gaming without modding, and the many many people that make it all happen.

Recognize the importance of giving them the chance of knowing and enjoying Quake and so many, many other classics, if they will.
Luckily they are inspired, maybe take them to new levels, and benefit us all in time.
Oh sure, I don't want to come off as a curmudgeon, just having been in modding and having seen a lot of bad moves from various companies over the years can make you skeptical/salty of any new re-release or remaster. If you've never played Quake, this might be an ok way to start, but if you want to make mod/levels, or I guess play online DRM free, you'll probably go beyond this.
