The only thing that could make it better is if AI was responsible for the breakthrough. Blank

but..

Microsoft itself is also quite aggressively researching new battery tech. Just this week, Microsoft published details of its own battery breakthroughs, showcasing how its artificial intelligence models discovered new methods for reducing the amount of lithium needed in today's batteries.

To me? Not really. On rare occasion maybe. I'm kind of a hard anti-censorship dude. It's never okay to me, whether I care about what is being censored or not. If they are deleting posts that are against the rules of the website, then that's fine (I am sick of whiners saying that Facebook or other social networks are 'censoring' their misinformation and offensive bullshit). Their house, their rules and all that. I don't think this is the same thing though. A review about a game is not a big deal, to be sure, but I don't like it just the same.

there is no way to stop the trolling masses. yet there are actually ways to do so:

- prohibit people from writing a review for a metacritic-enabled (let's propose there is a mandatory API in each game for every page that hosts reviews and if you choose to not use the API you won't see your reviews there) when they haven't bought in on a featured (metacritic-enabled) platform. it automatically filters bots and everyone who got sent by a friend.

let people see the progress of i.e. The Main Story and their hours played so that they can judge the validity of the review. hours played are locked when the review is posted and again updated if and when an update to the review happens. the metacritic API could maybe even be used, if you want to go that far, to check IF a player passed That Kiss Scene and HOW they chose to discredit their opinion when they clearly didn't even pass that scene nor choose The Kiss.

- take all review sites down. only reviews acceptable are the ones from gaming sites or people with YT, twitch, you name it. the trolling in the comments gets moderated, but a lot of that moderation could be biased.

i'd prefer the first way, i'd have no problem that people see my play time and that my voiced concerns or my review are valid because i sunk a few years into playing my death knight in WoW and at least prove that i know one or two things about it. then again, you'd give up your anonymity to stop toxic shit which lets all the toxic assholes win by default. they did it, the big platforms cave in and make players transparent.

hum. either way, it's maybe best to just stay away from the internet.

Not to derail the thread (cool picture, not sure about specific thoughts on McGee's retirement, though I enjoyed playing American McGee's Alice), but...

1. I will address this from a professional perspective because hiring people is part of my job. I don't care about certificates and disregard 99% of them immediately. All they show is that the holder sat on their ass, stared at a screen, and passed a rote learning exam. That's valueless to me. Now, throw me some links to a GitHub, gitea, or other such repo where you have proven, demonstrable skills on display and I will perk up and pay attention. Link some completed projects that you have finished or been a part of. Highlight what your part was so I can test it thoroughly and dig in to it.

2. Slackware? I think you are going to have a rough time of it going that route and even if you do, and stick to -current at all times, you're likely to run face first in to problems where some packages are too old and some are too new. If it's the stability you're after, you can't really go wrong with Debian on that basis. If it's "Because I want to install everything from source", well there's Gentoo for that. The "security" of Slackware is somewhat of a myth in 2023. You can harden any distro if that is your mindset and there's always distros like Fedora's Silverblue or Kinoite if you want an immutable system for ultimate sysroot level security.

Proton is really good these days, by and large. Sure, there are edge cases but they are just that...edge cases. Lutris will cover you for GOG, Steam, Humble Bundle, and EGS. Not sure how it will handle Origin/EA or Ubisoft, however. I think it comes down to "How often do I play games that justify me keeping and maintaining a completely different OS just to play those particular titles?" Only you can answer that for yourself.

3. I think you need to sit down and take a very honest inventory of what services you use and make an assessment from there. For myself, everything I use is pretty Google/Apple/MS taint free. I use ProtonMail and ProtonVPN for those purposes listed in their names and that is literally all they do. For maps, I use Magic Earth. Messaging is done via Wire or Matrix. Password management is handled by a self-hosted BitWarden Docker image. I have my own personal wiki. I use NextCloud as my "cloud" storage but I host it so I have ultimate control over it. Jellyfin for media streaming. Everything is both publicly accessible by me and authorized users but not public facing. The magic of that is Tailscale which made it dirt simple to setup a mesh VPN for all of my services. I have zero inbound ports open on any of my firewalls. Don't need them.

Part of my assessment was asking "Am I willing to put in the work to own all, or as much as possible, of my own data? Am I willing to maintain it?" Because, make no mistake, it is work. At least the initial setup was. I've deployed a lot of automation for resiliency and redundancy so there's not a lot of actual work I need to do these days. Most of the work is reading logs and going "Yep. That all replicated successfully."

But this is a lifestyle change and only you can decide if you are willing to make that change from being a bloodbag for the corporations to suck dry or someone who values their security, privacy, and control above all else. Even convenience. It's going to mean thinking and operating differently. It's going to mean that distrusting a corporation is your default state and making sure that, on your end, they can't wend their tendrils in to mooch as much of your data as possible.

if that isn't the first page of the newest testament, it should be.

Well, I demand that my games cost less, and not 70 dollars per game. Bet that don't happen! All this will do is cause a domino effect on gaming prices, they will undoubtably push this cost onto the consumers.

Its the same crap that's happening now with minimum wage. they get a pay raise, the business raise the pricing on goods. This is what these dumbasses don't understand.

how can you say that? the cost of living skyrockets everywhere, the wages don't. the minimum wage is the lowest wage you can get and you still cannot do anything with it other than "not die of starvation, thirst or the elements". minimum wage earners aren't at fault because they didn't "learn a proper job", because we rely on a big backbone of workers in shopping centers or gastronomy. so when a minimum wage increases, it is to offset inflation and other developments. it is THE LEAST we can do as a society.

same with game devs. okay, let's keep your games at 50$. but please don't act shocked or angry when there is another crunch and another soulsucking company harassing people. that would be the price. and by the way: even if we gave the peope working on the games more or less money, the execs will still raise the price of the game. 70$/€ is the norm now and that will rise to 80 soon enough.

i don't know where you get dark patterns from? the shop rotates and the v-bucks are earned or bought.

you don't open any chance boxes.
you get what you see.
you don't need skins as they clearly state that they don't give gameplay advantages.

i know parents who give their demanding child a lot of gift cards to buy v-bucks and imho, that is their own fault. also not engaging with the game and checking voice settings. how is it in other games? we all know how notorious CoD is for youngsters screeching insults. is it off by default there?

cannot see how epic wound up here since fortnite really has it's shit together.

whats a blizzard survival game like?

collect 2 rocks, run them halfway across the world. pick up 4 sticks make camp fire, fight 3 rabbits that dont spawn in that zone, then take rabbit meat back to base, turn in. Reward for 4 hours of hassle :2 rocks.

have you ever actually played WoW?

TBC had a few quests which often led to points not in the current vicinity but seldom outside the zones you'd quest in.
since WotLK the questing always was more hub-y and you'd be pointed toward a location via breadcrumb quest and then questing around that hub.

nowadays you almost always have your main quests and most of the time can only do those, but some NPCs want to take advantage of a hero nearby and offer their stuff.
those are often simple kill / collect quests mixed with "use vehicle", "use ability" or "solve puzzle" and culminate in a bigger threat / story part. questing through their zones is always a breeze and works without thinking too much, though reading the story from various indiviuals or teams behind them is great too.

questing in WoW is my go to way to level toons and i wish more games had such a good questing experience.

It's not like they are owed anything.

as if loyalty is rewarded in this industry and the same people work on the next game instead of being moved around or terminated. they got their money, they don't participate in any financial success and by pirating you only damage the publisher.
i pirated a lot back in the day, didn't do it for at least a decade or even longer. i wouldn't even know if you are able to pirate games nowadays. as such i can't imagine that there is a big vibrant scene involved and that many people really pirate.

also the age old discussion: when i pirate a game which i would never have bought anyway, is there really any damage? i often bought games later on to cleanse my soul if i really liked them.

guys, calm down. jeez!

yes, we are talking about - i think it was a ps4? launch or exclusive game - something which costs a few million to build.
yes, there were announcements and trailers and hype. as almost always with these kind of games.
yes, as it was one of the bigger attractions it drew a lot of attention.
yes, it overpromised and underdelivered.

sure, many here are still pissed at the public figure associated with that "failure" of a game. why though? why can't a human being be wrong and fuck up? what did it cost anyone here? some people maybe did the wrong thing and pre-order. sorry, that is on you. some people bought into the fantasy of a seamless transition into a big universe and bought on launch. also, on you for not waiting on reviews / buying full price.

yet that team stood by their game and worked endlessly on it to redeem the initial failure and from what i read, they delivered and then some. what did we lose here? maybe 60 bucks. is that the worth we have for a human who exaggerated the scope for his game? phew, man. there are far worse offenders out there. also, by that same rules, wouldn't you also have bought into star citizen? the only difference would be that a barebone of NMS was released and improved upon while SC didn't have that for a long time and still is being built on.

cut the team some slack. they earnt it.

Dear Employees,

STFU and go back to work. All the noise you were making, you think you'd have all quit your jobs in protest at all the horrible transgressions you've witnessed. Instead you're still here, drawing a salary. Clearly you didn't think it was all that bad until you saw a chance for financial gain. If you'd like to keep drawing that salary, get back to work! Otherwise, there's the door and you'll be replaced before it hits you in the ass.

but who said they do it for financial gain? they want a safe workspace and somehow i thought we all wanted that. guess we happen to be boys after all which seldom experience an unsafe workspace.

I too remember the "golden age", as I like to call it, fondly. But to go from this nuanced perspective to the insanely hyperbolic 50s...

i think that a lot of the atmosphere in diablo comes from the dark, gritty and bloody environments and the whole thing with hellish sin. blood, gore, spells, axes and some boobies should be the main theme of anything that could be a heavy metal album cover. but if it hurts the sales, it hurts the sales..

for visiting other cities or rail-to-flight it really works great.
