Don't you guys remember being, say, 12, and trying to sit at the adult table at a holiday, and every time you said something you were treated like a child, as if what you said had no meaning because of your age? You don't see women going through that fairly regularly?

Actually, the reason that what you said at the dinner table was treated differently was because it was childish. No 12 year-old can speak to adult concerns in any way other than hypothetical. Most children don't understand that until they become adults themselves. Wisdom requires experience, despite the fact that Western culture has developed a cult of youth in a vain attempt to deny it. The same assholes who once chanted "Never trust anyone over 30" are 60+ now, and still want to run things their way, with no apparent irony. So what you said DID have no meaning... but you were too young to correctly identify the reason (you blamed ageism rather than your own ignorance).

Ditto this with Sarkeesian. Just because she has a vagina doesn't make her views more insightful, legitimate, or even worthwhile than anyone else's. She (and her white knights) defend her as if all of the criticism must be based on her gender. Someone on this thread has already pointed out that she used a game with a potential female protagonist as an example of a game that denies women agency. Where's your response to that?

The only sexist on this thread is you, since you obviously won't hold Sarkeesian's bullshit to the same standard that you would anyone else's, simply because she has a vagina...

Arrrgh! If only the combat didn't leave me cold. The story looks good, the visuals impressive, but the combat... I couldn't even make myself finish the first one because of the combat style, and the second... it is best not to talk of it...

Someone PLEASE tell me they've figured out how to do third-person combat well so that I can buy this game!

Raising awareness is key. And for all her flaws, that's exactly what Sarkeesian is doing.

This is why nothing ever gets fixed. Because asshats like Sarkeesian babble on "raising awareness" and never do anything to fix the problem. I know, Anita, why don't you put up a picture on twitter of you holding a sign reading "End Sexism Now! #MyVaginaWantsToPlay"! That'll change the world! Look at how it helped get those Nigerian girls back! Oh, wait...

"Raising awareness" is nothing more than a license to bitch and moan, while trying to immunize yourself from the need to actually take your time and effort to actually address the problem. You get to pat yourself on the back for being so caring, yet live your selfish life without one minute modicum of sacrifice for your "cause."

You want to fix sexism in games? Make some games that aren't. Refuse to buy games that are, and take the minimum effort to contact publishers to let them know why. Give up your cushy day-job and become a Q&A tester for a company, work your way up the ladder, then change the direction of the company. Oh wait, my life should be a fucking Queen song ("I want it all, and I want it now"), so you should just make my wishes so, you peasants!

What you shouldn't do is collect a shitload of money, pocket most of it while producing videos in your basement for $150 and stealing other people's "Let's Play" work so you don't have to. As for the justification of her mendacity in service of the larger "goal," try that shit out with respect to Creationaism sometime, eh, and see how stupid you look. Sure, they're wrong about the physics, biology, geology, astrophysics, chemistry, and chronology, but don't let that stand in the way of your blind acceptance of their goal! Pass the "special" Flavor-Aid...

That is the EXACT argument they make. Same in law enforcement. I was in a course with a girl who couldn't do a push up.......not sure I need to say much more....
Want something else to tick you off? In Canada for policing men are required to do 30 pushups and women 10 for certification in FIT and getting hired. They're only required to do 3 pullups, we need to do a minimum of 15. Run 1 mile in 9-13 minutes? Not so for women, theirs is 13-17 minutes. Equality!

The US military branches have had lower PFT requirements for women for decades. Now they are talking about lowering the standards again (under the guise of "Is strength really necessary on the modern battlefield?" (hint: yes, it is), especially in special forces training. This is because getting that 3rd or 4th star is usually dependent on combat deployment, which women can't qualify for now outside the air wings. So we're going to degrade our military capability so that more women can make it to the top. If that isn't the definition of "agenda" then nothing is...

I don't know about this. I mean, of course I want an F-86, but as well as the full-detail DCS aircraft are modeled, and I have bought all of them (except the Mi-8), the rest of the sim leaves too much to be desired. Maybe when Edge or whatever they're calling it now is finally finished I'll take an interest again, but I'm sick to death of flying around the Crimea and the engine has serious performance issues with even moderately populated missions.

Basically, DCS is a fantastic button-pushing, rivet-counting sim, but after that, there isn't much to do. The A-10C and Blackshark provided hours of entertainment just learning how to operate their systems. The P-51, on the other hand, I had figured out in a couple hours, and the the UH-1 wasn't much better. The Sabre should be along the same lines.

Still, if and when we get Edge and if we get a Korean theater complete with Mig-15s and period correct Chinese ground units, that would be brilliant. Not counting IL-2 1946+mods, we haven't had a good Korean era combat sim since Mig Alley, and I have trouble imagining a better scenario--you have the power of swept-wing jets, but without all the BVR combat, endless faffing about with sensors, and so on. It was the pinnacle of seat-of-your-pants dogfighting.

All that said, if the price is right, I'll still probably pick it up when it's released. I'm guessing it's going to cost 50 USD though, and that's REALLY hard to justify.

Do you also have the "Flaming Cliffs" DLCs as well (I think that's now part of the whole DCS thing...)? I've been think of getting the latest one (as it looks more like a game and less like flight school to me), but I'm not sure I want to if it has the same flaws (in scenario/campaign diversity)...

The scope of SC is unlike any game we've seen before and that takes time. We'll get to see the first results of that in less than a week with the release of Arena Commander (the Dogfighting Module).

Elite Dangerous has a fraction of the fidelity or complexity, so it should progress a lot more quickly.

All SC has done, for now, is promise features. ANYONE can do that. Please don't talk as if they've already achieved something.
The dog-fighting videos were very disappointing.

On the other hand, Elite has pretty much delivered everything it's been promising without any delays. If it continues like this, we'll be landing and walking on Elite planets before we're actually flying any of the SC ships in the proper game (Arena Commander isn't a proper game).

Also it's very ignorant to call Elite less complex than SC just because it does things differently and doesn't promise every feature under the sun. There's things you can do in Elite that you would never be able to do in SC.

Dude, I hear you, but don't rile up the "believers." Normally sane, skeptical gamers suddenly go all gushy over SC to a degree that I've never seen. I mean, we have people dissing features you can play in the Elite beta based on features promised (or shown in a promo video) in SC. It's like Aliens: Colonial Marines never happened!

I'm seriously expecting the next pledge bonus to be a thermos of "special" Kool-Aid (well, Flavor-Aid, to be more accurate) sent to each backer...

Culture War!

Interesting observation. Of course, cultural diversity is hardly ever a concern. Instead, the focus is always on skin color or male/female. It's almost as if the folks who are stirring this up believe that someone's skin color or sex determines everything about him/her. I've heard other people say that kind of thing before; usually from under a white hood, though.

Compare an African-American and a Caucasian-American with an African-American and a Sub-Saharan African. Which pair actually are the most similar? It shows a massive parochialism to think that cultural differences don't dwarf any difference in melanin content (those folks that haven't ever left the Western world are amusing in their strident ignorance). Yet cultural diversity never gets mentioned (unless you are talking about the fine cultural variations between comparatively affluent Westerners). Why is that? My bet is that it doesn't provide as much possibility to make money or stroke one's ego as a straight focus on race or sex can provide...

Yeah... right!

Because resolution and frame rate are the only defining qualities, or even most important defining qualities, of "next generation?"

It's called a baseline. Seriously, are you suggesting that "next generation" (which implies an IMPROVEMENT over the current generation) can include graphics that are substandard even in terms of older PC or console hardware? Even some PS3 and Xbox 360 games generated better framerates at higher resolutions with textures that don't look that much different than Watch Dogs.

Are you just trolling? Because that comment is ridiculous on its face...

Meh, the entire series is overrated (much like The Witcher), made for people who like to pretend they are hardcore, adult gamers but really meant for them to wave around their Game of Thrones-esque epeens in alternating targets of newbs and fellow circle appreciators. Great, you like to engross yourself in a challenging, dark game world that is so different than the cookie-cutter casual candy land that you rally against as an effigy of the real world. Never mind that the community cultures behind these games are more akin to the workplace watercooler than the dungeon of the forsaken such gamers like to pretend it is. Instead of acting grown up, maybe you should just grow up. (applies to some of the players, not all)

That being said, if you're going to review a game like this you really should approach it as one of those players rather than as a generic gamer. It's meant for a particular audience and it is unfair to the artistic style and vision of the game to pretend it's something it's not. I'm all for some universal conventions when judging a game but you need to be open-minded in any genre of entertainment. I readily appreciate Dark Souls for what it has to offer, it certainly is unique, and while I get some of his arguments are valid he should have done some research beforehand. Then again, I guess many DS vets like to avoid the wikification of the game...but for newbs like the reviewer he should embrace all the help can get.
I was going to reply, but after this post, I have nothing left to say...

And it'll be overturned on appeal, then doubled at the appellate level, then voided again. Then Samsung will win a billion dollars in a lawsuit against Apple, have it reduced to $1.50 on appeal, then the Supreme Court will increase it to an award of 63 moss-covered, three-handled family gredunzas and a Happy Meal (TM).

By the time the lawsuits are done, Samsung will own Apple and Apple will own Samsung. Then they'll have to swap names and start the lawsuits all over.

A pox on both their houses...

Actually, you prove my point. I made no statement about the existence or absence of male privilege. I simply noted that the author's rhetorical strategy was one that assumed he was right regardless of the response he received. Much like you just assumed that I disagreed and that you were right without the slightest bit of evidence. That's not "argument" or "discussion" or even "thought"... It's just dogma...
