Yeah. It's not bad enough that people want to restrict what you say, now they want to restrict how you look at others. I guess thought control really is the final goal...

This is what happens when you have dev staffs of thousands and need to release the same game every year to keep your mega corp alive. Next it will be Call of Duty is Wonderland or OZ.

I want the gaming industry of 15 years ago back. When game development was a lot slower and the games lasted a lot longer.

It'll never happen. Video games used to be niche products, whether they were on PC or in stand-up machines at the arcade. So they could easily cater to niche game desires. Now they are big business; video games make more money every year than the GNP of Burkina Faso. Console-makers sell at a loss and make up for it by selling millions of copies (or a game only sells a few million copies and is a failure, like the TR reboot /s). No major game studio can risk a niche product (hence the rise of indies, crowdfunding, et al.).

You're longing for a day that can never be again. I'm just hoping that enough tools (Unity3D, CryEngine, Unreal4) and resources get out there for a reasonable enough cost and complexity that indies can afford to make niche games again.

Either that or, when they realized that they couldn't win the court case, the gov't decided to psyops both Apple and the terrorists and said, "That's OK, we've got it." when they actually don't.

It's amazing how creative the PR people can be in trying to make more-of-the-same sound unique and interesting. Maybe a few of these studios should hire the PR folks to design the games; maybe we'll finally get something new.

Oh, wait! They already did put the PR people in charge of game design... and we got Aliens: Colonial Marines. Never mind...

On PC, not so much. Now, me and you might enjoy the voltage porn and having 7 different programs controlling the settings, but most of normal people don`t and I don`t blame them for it.

Sorry, but that's bull. I haven't "tweaked" anything on my desktop for a PC game in years. I put the DVD in (or click "Download"), install, and then click "Play." Then, as if by a miracle, the game... runs.

Folks who babble about needing to tweak settings apparently haven't gamed on a PC since the 90's. Sure, if you want to run some esoteric extreme performance build. But just playing games (at higher fidelity and frame-rate than consoles) requires nothing but a desktop icon...

Hmmm, drumming up new business, eh? I wonder if these weekends are actually expanding the base. It seems to me that anyone interested in space games either is already on board or doesn't trust CR at all. Not sure what this will accomplish...

And for the record, it's reassuring to see all the anger pointed in my direction by such a cavalcade of dim-bulbed asshats. I hold it as a badge of honour. It tells me that I'm on the right track ^_^

When you run into someone who is an asshole towards you... then you've probably met an asshole.

When everyone you meet is an asshole towards you... then you're probably the asshole.

You should be a writer. Speeches, fiction, movies...something.

Considering what he posts here, he already writes fiction.

Speaking of corporate shills, have you ever noticed that you've never seen Slick and Beamer in the same place at the same time? I'm just sayin'...

The fact that we know it is a lie doesn't make it less of a lie. They are representing what they want the game to be, rather than what it is. There's not a lot of difference... except when the presenters don't acknowledge that what they are playing is the "vision," rather than an actual demonstration of the game. Because it's not.

Everyone has seen when a game has had to change because some feature doesn't pan out. Well, that isn't a problem on the "demos," as whatever feature doesn't have to be implemented... just scripted. But it leaves the impression with the viewer that said feature is possible and already a part of the game. It's lying about the progress. Normally, no one really cares so long as the demo represents the final gameplay fairly. But when it doesn't...

This game is an unfinished cash-grab.

If it is, then he's doing a bad job at it.

For that reason, I've decided to remove the game from Steam. I've also asked Valve to make it so that the game can be refunded regardless of the amount of the time it has been owned, meaning that anyone can get a refund at any time. It may take them a while to set that up, but it will be in place soon.

When I'm ready to update the game, I will replace the demo currently on GameJolt with the full game. From this point forward, the game will always be free.

Oh yeah. Total cash grab.

Actually, that hadn't been announced (or I certainly hadn't seen the announcement) when I posted.

But whatever. Nice to see that he has enough conscience to refund...

So, the actual developer admits that others perceive his earlier games as unfinished cash-grabs.

This game is an unfinished cash-grab.

Someone help me see the connection between these two...

They seem to have done everything a kickstarter could do wrong:

  • Play to nostalgia without recognizing that nostalgia is often impossible to live up to - check!

  • Overpromise - check!

  • Underbudget - check!

  • Use an engine not directly designed for your needs - check!

  • Hire toxic community managers (that are your employees' girlfriends) to alienate your supporters - check!

  • Delay & Excuses - check!

  • Folks, we have the absolute roadmap for kickstarter failure here! Someone get Chris Roberts on the phone...

On the Wikipedia article I've certainly run into the issue being described. I think part of the problem is a lot of those entries are written by people who are used to writing for scientific journals, which assume the reader already has a higher level of knowledge about the topic. Also the writing itself is generally not presented in a way that is easily understood by most people. It takes a good amount of skill to "dumb down" a complex topic so it's accessible to a wider readership. I'll take overly complex articles I have to struggle to understand over ones that only tell half the information to keep it simple any day.

The reason they are written like that is because many are copied word-for-word from textbooks and journals. I've run into this dozens of times when quick-referencing aerospace equations. This isn't a case of an expert who can't "dumb it down" or ELI5. It's a case of folks who have no clue what they are copying just pasting it into a wiki article...
