Destructible terrain and environments... People just didn't really care there either.

That's probably because they've historically been quite limited because they're so computationally expensive to implement accurately (See the hacks that Megaton Rainfall went to for their city levels). Everything feels like polystyrene blocks thrown around.

It's all been cheap, clunky parlour tricks usually at the expensive of graphics and AI. Implemented with some semblance of accuracy, better physics and environmental destruction would convey a whole new level of depth to the environments. The inability to leave any mark on the game-scape reduces the immersion factor significantly. What's the point of the orbital laser if all it does it create a 2 meter temporary smudge on the tarmac?

Take GTA; firing an RPG in a city block in GTA actually yielded some structural damage rather than the current... burn texture. Cars with dynamic damage etc. This doesn't have to be applied to everything in the game, just enough to make the experience more dynamic and unpredictable while still maintaining at least the graphical fidelity levels we've reached so far.

Long way off seeing anything like this in games considering that staged demo's like this are in no way indicative of all the other processing required to render a game (AI, Physics, Input, Network etc).

Coupled with the fact that even now - in 2018 - we still haven't got destructible terrain or realistic physics in any games (Red Faction 3 / Red Faction Guerilla are about as close as I can recall). Adding these features would go much further to immersing players than a few new rendering techniques which - quite frankly - can be faked quite well with consumer hardware we've currently got...

The crab is not scared, it's doing what crabs do. They fight. When an animal fights, it's not scared, it's high on adrenaline and will get it on until it's done.

Really? Seems the crab's actions are precisely described by the fight or flight response, which at its heart is fear and the overriding motivation to survive.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is fantastic - make sure you pick up all the diary entries since they really complete the Lovecraftian story and have some solidly immersive voice-over acting to boot.

Grossly overrated series, especially the ending which was terrible (5 minutes of 'Meadow' trying to parallel park?!?). The Shield on the other-hand was a master class, with the penultimate episode and the finale still being one of the most memorable - and brutal - endings I've ever come across.

17. Re: Star Citizen Website Relaunches, Offers New Trailer Jan 26, 2018, 16:34 mellis
I never get the hate over this title. What they're trying to achieve and what they have achieved is such a feat of computer engineering that it's frankly mind blowing from a technical perspective.

If they put Star Citizen out half baked, it'll tank and everyone can say I told you so, but then what? It'll pretty much be the end of any hope of an esoteric or original idea getting triple A funding independent of a major publishing house.

If however they take their time (as such an undertaking demands), there's a strong chance they'll create GTA in space (albeit without the hookers probably...maybe a stretch goal), and it will be beneficial for the entire industry especially those who have a great idea but just can't get it funded because it's missing the obligatory lootboxes, world-war-2-in-space, gender fluid characters or whatever else the cookie-cutter publishing trapper-keeper's demand.

Frankly, even if you hate Star Citizen and/or Chris Roberts - if they succeed it'll be good for the indie gaming industry as a whole and that can't be a bad thing...

In a crowd funded galaxy, not too far away...

Roberts: Lord Vader. This is an unexpected pleasure. We are honored by your presence.
Darth Vader: You may dispense with the pleasantries, Wing Commander. I am here to put you back on schedule.
Roberts: I assure you, Lord Vader, my men are working as fast they can.
Vader: Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.
Roberts: I tell you that this Star Citizen will be operational as planned.
Vader: The Emperor does not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation.
Roberts: But he asks the impossible. I need more Space Hookers.
Vader: Then perhaps you can tell him when he arrives.
Roberts: [alarmed] The Emperor's coming here?
Vader: That is correct, Wing Commander, and he is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.
Roberts: We shall double our efforts. And our pay.
Vader: I hope so, Wing Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as gullible as I am.

Even with the paraphrasing, the dialog is an excerpt of why the original Star Wars were so fantastic and all the new ones (including EP I, II, III), shite.

2. Re: Morning Interviews Dec 27, 2017, 17:17 mellis
but I don't think they'll allow for anything creative like a KOTOR game, just too risky.

That's why Star Wars is as successful a brand as it is though.
It's like they've completely forgotten the contribution of somewhat dark, adult orientated story-lines with compelling narratives that engrossed people in the franchise (Not EP I, II , II obviously).

The stuff Disney turns out is just formulaic dreck of the worst kind. But as Mark Hamill so astutely noted; Hollywood doesn't care about a good story, only about the money and by that metric they're great movies.

Real shame.

I'll definitely play it, but I fail to see what's different about this game gameplay wise. Looks like just a different coat of paint.

First thing I thought when I saw the Wolverine; That looks like the honey badger from Far Cry Primal with a different skin

But it's Far Cry and they've had some solid protagonists albeit suffering from a bit too much grind sometimes in between story missions which kinda affects the momentum.

Still, will buy this time sink.

NN is corporate propaganda. You are useful idiots. Regulations often inflate prices and protect markets to exploit you the consumer. Look at what the FDA has done with drug prices for example. They want to do the same thing to you with Title II. I'm not saying an ISP like Comcast is good but I don't think Title II or strong handed socialist regulation was the answer.

It's dead. DEAD I TELL YA.

There was a time when Gamasutra wrote decent articles. Now it's IGN level clickbait trash.

It's not click bait. AAA Single player games are ruinously expensive to create and - as others have pointed out - have little return over the initial sticker price. Maybe a few DLC's but that's it.

EA have had a string of expensive failures, the most recent being the 'AAA' single Player experience Mass Effect: Andromeda and they are likely being forced to take steps to improve their increasingly poor performance.

That is not to say AAA single player is by any means dead. It's kept Take 2 and Rockstar in idle luxury for nearly two decades and looks set to do so again in 2018 with Red Dead Redemption 2. And another company, Ubisoft, churns out predominately single player experiences (Far Cry, Assassins Creed etc), but variance and originality (or risk as the analysts term it) is definitely on the decline.

None of this is really surprising when the budgets for triple A games now match those of the Hollywood movie industry which - somewhat ironically - is also experiencing its own financial crisis at the moment.

Does this game feature realistic crashes though? Or are all the cars still magically invulnerable except to a few minor cosmetic scratches and superficial damage? Always find the lack of accurate damage modelling a real immersion killer.

Yeah, we haven't even seen a trailer for SQ 42. Seems odd given that the voice work was all done two years ago as well as that first level. Two years should be enough time to get that campaign mostly complete.

I never did play WC4. Maybe I'll play that over the weekend.

No point building a campaign until the underlying technology is robust, otherwise you either end up (a) limiting the scope of the campaign so severely it looks decidedly outdated compared to the multiplayer component or (b) continually rebuilding aspects of the campaign to accommodate upstream toolset / engine changes that may necessitate huge rewrites (and are very demoralizing to boot).

See Mass Effect: Andromeda and you'll see exactly why trying to undertake technological leaps and campaign development simultaneously usually doesn't end well:
