The new 5th Edition ruleset for D&D is the best iteration yet (imo).
However, depending on what camp you are in, it either doesn't lend itself too easily to CRPG's or it makes everything much easier. ;-)
The rules are less strict, and GM control is back as a very deciding factor. So if you are a company that works best within a constant frame, 5e is not too good, whereas if you are good to adapt, I suspect 5e is the easiest D&D system yet to turn into a computer game concept.
That said, I would love for someone to try and make a new D&D game with 5e rules. The Baldur's Gate games have still not been surpassed.
I would also be delighted to see a remake of Shattered Lands, or heck Al-Quadim even and experience that cool world in an outright CRPG.
