The problem is not challenge or not but whether the game is presenting us with something to bother continue playing it.

Take shmups, a game like sine mora is not as good as many other shmups like Jamestown because of the level of care and craftmanship that goes into the design despite the fancy graphics.

It takes a lot of work to figure out why something is fun or not and very few people are good at it. Many developers have been relying on set-piece cinematic spam the last 15 years or so because they are so lacking in understanding of building intrinsically compelling gameplay systems.

So they rely on hollywood to sell games. Building a genuinely fun game along the lines of civilization or alpha centauri is genuinely hard and companies want easy money.

The ship of stupid sailed when Ultima online and EQ became a thing, normalizing online drm. We got generations of kid who are ok with basically the theft of software from their computers and no privacy because they are dumb as a bag of hammers.

The videogame idiocracy sailed as soon as mmo's became a thing paving the way for steam, then league of legends and TF2.

The fact that these god awful games exist and are totally controlled by game companies now is a far cry from the 90's with level editors and user control of software.

It went way beyond the characters, I tried the free trial and the art design is really what killed it.

Basically Cliff is still living in the UT era, art in games like quake 2 and unreal tournament were very un-coordinated programmer art - aka no sense of style or cohesion and that was fine during the 90's. But after the 2000's people started to take art seriously.

I always get a laugh when I see quake champions cloning the "nerd art" of quake 3, aka the quake 3 character models and game was basically just random art wrapped around a game since those games were about systems and gameplay first, since back then we weren't so hung up on if there was any cohesive sense of style since gameplay was all that mattered. Cliff is thinking it's still the 90's.

Games were much higher quality in the late 90's because budgets were smaller and graphics were less detailed projects were more manageable. Pc ports have been shit forever, go load up UT or UT2004 the options blow the socks off almost all modern AAA game ports.

I held out for almost 10 years after steam was released but there are new kids being born around the globe and the country, you can't stop kids and their tech illiterate parents from entering their credit card and buying shit for their kids.

It would help if they released on GOG. Let us remember putting drm crapware into peoples games devalues them. That's why many of us wait for steam sales, no one wants to pay top dollar for a game that can be broken or taken away at the push of a button.

No one who paid for mmo or steam infected drm games gets the right to complain about drm effecting game preservation. If you bought Everquest, World of warcraft or played any mmo, paid for any skins in a drm'd game or any microtransaction you set the foundation for all this shit.

MMO's were the original drm'd online game with a subscription fee and the gaming masses ate it right up. To suddenly get all teary eyed about preserving game history when most people are still buying drm infested games is quite the bit of hypocrisy.

You guys don't seem to get it, the game industry has never kept anything seperate. Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 went from being software you entirely controlled to online /w microtransaction ridden crap. There is no such thing as a game that a game company won't try to put microtransactions in, as soon as mmo's, horse armor and buying mounts in wow was a thing loot boxes were the inevitable next step.

Everyone who supported mmo's, steam and drm - this is the end result - games with less content sold back to you at a higher price.
