There is an entire generation who's memory starts after xbox and wouldn't have a clue about how computers work or anything else. That's why the software market for games and everything else is fucked up beyond all recognition the average person on our planet is incredibly mind blowingly dumb.

They are trying to never have software controlled by the gamer. Most people already have given up way too much control buying server locked games and windows 10 anyway. Basically they already have stolen the software we pay for by reprogramming it to obey the corporations and it will get worse.

Everyone is trying to undo the freedom for computer users for profits.

Then you should go pick up some retro copies of quake 1/2/3 and download user made mods, maps and levels. The thing with new AAA games is they remove control from the player and make you pay for what used to be free and everyone shared. The level of fuck you in modern AAA games is off the charts. You really don't understand how badly PC games have been fucked over with this new generation of kiddies who never gamed on PC during the 90's.

If you really want to understand the rage, go pickup old PC games made during the 90's, their level editors and maps/mods. You'll start to understand why there is such rage at modern gaming.

We no longer get dedicated servers with most games and if they have some kind of server option they are completely controlled by the company. AKA we lost control of the software completely. The matchmaking bs is just drm by another name.

RPG's were rebranded mmo and went largely totally autocombat - aka combat systems devolved into watch fests because the average mmo player is a reflexless chimpanzee.

Jesus christ you're dumb if you believe this, the last 20 years of PC gaming has been a disaster with the acceptance of drm and mmo's having normalized basically renting games in perpetuity from game companies, very little on the dedicated server side and mod tools from major AAA games compared to the 90's.

Modern game 'expansions' were nothing like the meaty content expansions we had in the 90's. Look at how Starcraft 2 was cut up into three parts and LAN was removed. Look at how diablo 3 had always online drm put into the single player portion of the game just to get those auction house microtransactions.

Look at how quake 3 is a fucking microtransaction ridden f2p game that you don't own or control and they are selling fucking unlocks in a game you don't own nor control.

Actually... Intel bribed companies not to use AMD chips way back in the athlon days and that denied amd necessary funding for all the R&D money they spent on it. That move extremely wounded AMD pretty badly. So to say it's all amd's fault is a bit of bullshit.

We've single handedly had games stolen from us and trapped on the other side of the internet and everything that used to be free with free level editing tools and mods has been curtailed/taken away out of most AAA games and then put in fucking lot boxes... can you imagine having skins/maps and mods in quake 3 that we used to have for free put into loot boxes? It's fucking insanity. I wouldn't mind if league of legends and dota 2 cancer got bitten by bs legislation.

Those games pioneered fraud on a massive scale. That's exactly what they are. MMO's, steam and microtransaction ridden crap were ways to move software off gamers PC's.

The fact that humanity ate it up is why PC gaming is such a disaster compared to the 90's.

Loot boxes are the natural progression of you people accepting mmo's and steam, as soon as people bought a server locked game it was over. The entire mission of the game industry was to take software control away from customers. That has been going on since the days of Ultima online, everquest and wow.

Sorry to tell you that happened 20 years ago with the rise of ultima online, everquest and world of warcraft. Steam and mmo's like that paved the way for normalizing all this shit.

Once people "accepted" mmo's as not being fraudulently ripped of (paying monthly for a game you never own) the rest was inevitable.

WoW let us remember was the most successful mmo on the planet with 10 million plus people playing it, that is a lot of fucking stupid people. Non gamers were playing it which is why microtransactions became inevitable. People I know that were not computer literate were playing wow.

AKA the end of computer literate people being the bulk of game buyers stopped when computers and high speed internet became affordable for the masses of tech illiterate fools.

You guys are delusional, Most wanted 2005 was the best selling need for speed series out of all nfs games that have ever been released up until this very day. Both shift, shift 2 and Pro street tried to take nfs back to a more sim like game with mixed results. The series has been falling off in terms of sales since Most wanted 2005. Most wanted 2005 sold 15 million copies across all platforms, it dipped to 4-5 million after carbon/prostreet/etc. All the others have had trouble reaching even 5 million.

The people who ended up making Project cars and Project cars 2 were responsible for NFS shift series.

Underground 1 and 2 were both pretty decent games. Most wanted 2005 was a high water mark for the series selling 15 million units.

The problem is not challenge or not but whether the game is presenting us with something to bother continue playing it.

Take shmups, a game like sine mora is not as good as many other shmups like Jamestown because of the level of care and craftmanship that goes into the design despite the fancy graphics.

It takes a lot of work to figure out why something is fun or not and very few people are good at it. Many developers have been relying on set-piece cinematic spam the last 15 years or so because they are so lacking in understanding of building intrinsically compelling gameplay systems.

So they rely on hollywood to sell games. Building a genuinely fun game along the lines of civilization or alpha centauri is genuinely hard and companies want easy money.

The videogame idiocracy sailed as soon as mmo's became a thing paving the way for steam, then league of legends and TF2.

The fact that these god awful games exist and are totally controlled by game companies now is a far cry from the 90's with level editors and user control of software.

It went way beyond the characters, I tried the free trial and the art design is really what killed it.

Basically Cliff is still living in the UT era, art in games like quake 2 and unreal tournament were very un-coordinated programmer art - aka no sense of style or cohesion and that was fine during the 90's. But after the 2000's people started to take art seriously.

I always get a laugh when I see quake champions cloning the "nerd art" of quake 3, aka the quake 3 character models and game was basically just random art wrapped around a game since those games were about systems and gameplay first, since back then we weren't so hung up on if there was any cohesive sense of style since gameplay was all that mattered. Cliff is thinking it's still the 90's.
