News Comments > HTC's SteamVR Headset Revealed
64. Re: HTC's SteamVR Headset Revealed Mar 2, 2015, 11:40 theglaze

Hrmmm, let me get this straight...when it comes to determining the user's perspective in the virtual environment:

GearVR uses the phone's gyroscopes
Oculus uses a camera peripheral
Vive uses cameras on the headset itself

Surely one is better than the others in accuracy?

And this confirms a significant divide between the developed software for each, and issues with porting one experience from one device to another?

I'm totally behind VR, but damnit all if I have to buy more than one headset!

Haha, one of his best lines this year.

He's right about online-only gameplay experiences; big developers often produce titles that just aren't rewarding/interesting/involving enough for a long-term commitment, and often at the foundation, the actual gameplay isn't as good as the hype (Evolve, Titanfall, Destiny, soon to release BF Hardline).

While all these action/FPS games are faltering to keep momentum, CS:GO continues to grow month, after month, after month. It's been the same gameplay for what, 15 years? Boggles the mind to see it routinely high on Steam's weekly sales. And the only thing new that Valve has put into it is gambling (!) via case opening for gun skins.

It's for the dude bro's out there, like this guy, Hardline Drifting on his youtube channel.

If you can't make it pass the first 30 seconds, you're not EA's target audience.

1. Re: Morning Screenshots Feb 16, 2015, 12:23 theglaze

Within the screenshots you can read that Codemasters are targeting 1080p resolution at 60 fps and that they are already hitting 45-55 fps.

A smooth, consistent frame rate is now (imo, always was) a must have requirement with next-gen racing titles; the competition from Driveclub, Need for Speed, Forza, and Project CARS is forcing the issue of "eye candy visuals"

But where's the discussion on how much the physics have improved in F1 2015 or how they've introduced additional car setup adjustments for new ways to tune the cars?

I think Codemasters is going to get caught out of position this generation. They've consistently designed their games to appeal to the casual racer, an audience that will find more entertainment from today's competition.

If Codemasters alienates the F1 fans, again, with a watered down simcade that has no more car adjustments than F1 2010 did 5 years ago, they're going to have a pretty racer that no one cares to buy.

Lian Li DK-02X on techPowerUp.

People are hating this on the techPowerUp forums, but I think it's brilliant.

There have been plenty of DIY wooden examples of this design, but this is the first metal framework with a well throughout layout that I've seen.

Yes, it's expensive ($1200 USD), but they'll gauge the market with this idea. I'm sure there will be a smaller, cheaper model in the lineup.

The space savings are awesome, especially for those with small apartments and have a gaming system in a common area.

I don't think I'd use the keyboard tray; I'd rather see height adjustable legs and I'd use the glass surface instead.

I also enjoyed Criminal Origins. I thought the puzzle solving was lazy, but the combat was fun and the atmosphere was well done.

I like racing games but previous WRC titles looked so underwhelming I could never force myself to buy one.
There was a demo too for one of them (maybe on the console) and the handling was just plain suck.
Codemasters Grid and Dirt series was leaps and bounds ahead in physics and fun factor.
The real question is "can it even rift?"
That's going to become the defining factor of games released from next year on.

I hope that is the case, because I'm going to fall hard into sim racing as soon as the technology and the game support is ready.

I've had a change of heart: if they or anyone else wants to try and bring this to gaming, just go for it.

I'll never know what its like to drive a rally car like Kubica, and I welcome their interpretation of it:

Re: car noise in general, I've driven a Tesla and love how quiet it is. The almost instant on acceleration takes a little getting used to as well. When the "consumer" line arrives in 2016 I'll be quite interested.

Put me down in the MX5 realm of cars: lightweight, short wheelbase, manual transmission, crazy grip with sticky tyres, and a small but competent engine that reminds you on every shift that you're in a driver's sports car.

No engine sound emulation required, and you can leave the batteries at home.

Bought the game when it popped up for presale...perhaps the last time I do that. It feels generic, I jus don't feel compelled to keep playing it. I ended up picking Endless Legend on steam sale and plan to play that instead, offers far more compelling races and gameplay dynamics.

No big surprise there. They haven't produced anything too good in recent years.
Autosport was fun for a bit but the F1 games they release are just copies of previous years. Still uses the Grid 1 game engine.
Anyways best of luck to them, hope those that got let go find a job quickly.

Each F1 release has been an evolution of the EGO engine, until most recently with F1 2014 using 3.0 as 2013 did. That game caught a lot of slack from both the community and reviewers because it basically looked like a reskin of F1 2013, and with less content. While visually there are similarities, the driving mechanics are considerably more fun than any other entry into the series.

That said, they are catching up with the F1 calender and releasing 2015 at the start of the year, including PC. I'm curious to see if they can retain the traction models that made F1 2014 so much fun to drive.

I'm not sure if they are classifying GRID Autosport as a success or failure, but I did not buy into that series or GRID 2. They lost me at a video showing the new Endurance race mode, featuring races that are loooooong....as in 3 or 5 laps. Riiight, that's a fair representation of the grueling 3, 6, 12, or 24 hour endurance race events that they are emulating.

I wish them luck but they would have been better off making L4D3.

Loved both L4Ds, but you don't feel the game was pretty much played out? What does it need? New maps & weapons? Better graphics?

Also, a L4D3 from today's Value would have a whole crafting world to it with insane customization. I could imagine a big community driven content side to it as well.

I played the hell out of L4D, especially versus. I thought L4D2 improved the game in almost every way, but it wasn't enough to encourage me to put in the hours. I think it did get played out, and a L4D3 on PC probably wouldn't be a buy unless I cave to peer pressure.

That said, a release of L4D neeeeeeds to go to XB1 and PS4...I think it plays great as a console game but the 360 release ran at sub 20 FPS. 1080P and a solid FPS on the new consoles will sell a lot of copies.

ALC 1150 is easily found on MB's that are around $100, or lower w/rebates. I have no doubt a good dedicated card can offer a better audio experience, but you're going to need better headphones/speakers and music that actually benefits from better hardware; streamed pop music isn't going to improve cause it's coming from a $500 dedicated sound card. The gap between dedicated and on-board has narrowed tremendously in the last 10 years.

After some googling it seems that the ALC1150 is the first Realtek product that encourages manufacturers to use higher quality amps on the board, and it's that boosted signal which gives this generation noticeably different and usually better sound than previous generations, enough to rival entry dedicated audio cards. I believe ALC1150 was originally launched on high-end Z87 boards.

My board has Realtek ALC898 (Z77), which is still found on mainstream Z97 mboards, and it is inferior to an Asus Xonar dedicated card. Justifying the cost of the upgrade is totally dependent on all the other variables, including the ear of the listener.
