I wonder if it can do augmentation games like Pokemon GO...because that was a great tech demo that showed what is possible and the interest in it. This thing will then be in a space all by itself, more gaming capable than other mobile devices, and no competition from MS/Sony who are pushing 4K/VR first.

People always love to blame Valve's for some reason... you could also "gamble" exactly like this in literally any other game that allows in-game item trading. It's not their fault that people use their in-game trading system for things like this. They could use CS:GO skins to barter for hookers on craigslist if they really wanted to and Valve would still not be to blame.

True.

The problem is that CSGO is a video game, and that intrinsically means it includes a large number of minors who should not have any access to traditional gambling of items with monetary value. Valve's enabling the business practice by providing the backend systems to support transactions, plus selling the content to begin with.

About time!

Inferno always use to be a grind, and in pro competitive play, the number of fakes the offense runs to try to get defensive rotations can be numerous, pushing the round timer to the end. I've watched a few tourney's with great inferno matchups, and others so drawn out it was hard to enjoy it.

Hopefully this helps!

Last time I played CS with sprays, trolls spammed the most disgusting images they could find from the darkest corners of the internet...

So a monetized system gets a pass from me, and the fact that each spray can only be tagged 50 times before being depleted is alright with me too. Adds significance to what use to be abused.

Just wish they had new art out there, seems like there's a lot of repeats from gun sticker collections.

More Info:

Valve CSGO Pick'Em Challenge is the official system Valve has implemented to let users bet on players in major tournaments, however, the reward is digital and cannot be directly traded for money.

So Valve has developed a front end for "gambling", should they choose to remove the 3rd party websites and bring it all in-house.

Considering how laissez faire Valve can operate, I'd be surprised if they do that...but money is money!

Bloomberg: The biggest site, CSGO Lounge, handled about $1 billion in bets in the first seven months of the year

Holy crap!

Note that every CSGO item sold player to player via Valve Marketplace is subject to 15% administration fee. I don't know if Valve gets that cut via the CSGO Lounge system, but if they still get their 15%, Valve makes $250 million annually off the Lounge activity alone...

Game Maker Valve Ordered to End Support of Black-Market Gambling

Is this for real? I don't play competitive gaming but I didn't see any suggestion in the report, which Valve could take to stop this. If the US government doesn't have the power to control foreign and offshore gambling, how the hell does Valve have this power. Does the government expect Valve to stop selling dlc or do they want Valve to pull a rabbit out of their ass... Smackdown

Right now, I believe a player checks a box upon signing up to one of these sites to allow the official Valve partner/developer (aka CSGO Lounge) to access their account. Some people manage their entire inventories through 3rd party sites because they have tools that show trends of market value, much like a stock market.

I guess Valve could change how ALL developers can access and manipulate player inventories via 3rd party websites...which would essentially shut down betting sites because they can't be the middle man.

This is a win/win for Valve...right now they just host the backend of the system and make tonnes of money. And if they have to shut it down, they have the opportunity to register as casino like entity and handle the front end to, making just as much if not more money then they did before.

Sad to see the game became abandonware. It was a lot of fun. I played the shit out of it when it launched and eventually dropped about 20 bucks into it because it was fun. The F2P part was not terrible because your basic weapons still were pretty effective and you could grind relatively quickly if you had a direction you wanted to go in. I spent 20 bucks and really was able to unlock all the classes and weapons I wanted to and was pretty satisfied by that.

Me too.

$20 in Ascend got me a lot more than $20 in Planetside 2, both came out around the same time.

The greater problem probably lies in the obsession with needing "rare skins" than with the existence of a system to accommodate your obsession. This is like blaming the casino for your own lack of self control in playing it's games. You are not obligated to feed them money just because they accept money.

Agreed.

I can recal a time where items were rewarded based on performance, where an accomplishment like recording 100 epic saves was rewarded. Oh wait, don't reward the player for his/her achievements earned while participating in the world you created..

Please insert $1.25 for GOTCHA

LOL, the pronunciation is strikingly similar to "gotcha"...

Which I find hilarious because the dev's are relying on compulsive consumer behavior for the scheme to work. Each time they lure a new customer in, dev's be like "GOTCHA!"

That's the thing though.. you don't "have" to pay for anything. Your fixation on cosmetic modifications to a car that will only be seen for a couple seconds at the end of a game by anyone, is simply a choice. Some people focus on the gameplay mechanics and simply playing better, others want to "pimp their ride". If the latter crowd is funding the release of free content for people who are just interested in playing the game, I think it's a successful model for everyone involved.

Of course, the game is still fun even if all the cars were the same. However, dont just disregard the cosmetic side of the game, and their encouragement to the player to consume, manage inventory, and trade-up

The new crate system is based on a gambling model, and it's not compatible with the Steam Marketplace. I can't pick the car decal I want for my $2 ride, I'll have to feed the slot machine $1.25 each time.

Psyonix has done some things right, such as no functional advantage to mods to the car and not segregating the community from modes and arenas.

But forcing its players to gamble to win the next tier of cosmetic items? I find that disappointing.

Good luck on the slots, everyone!

Yeah me too!

It better be free. The case+key micro gambling system they've introduced exists outside the Steam Market, so it's all cash money for them.

Meanwhile servers are still crappy, with car and ball warps even with sub 100ms. Besides content, I haven't seen any updates announce improvements to the technical side of the game.

The first sentence of their announcement, which Blue also quoted, literally says free in all caps.

Also, I haven't seen the car and ball warps you're talking about even when I've played this with pings over 100 at times. You might want to make sure your local config/networking isn't messed up in any way.

I was being sarcastic, perhaps I should have phrased it "damn right it's free" because everyone is buying keys to open up crates and get decals, wheels, paints, etc, and I'm left looking like chump with the "free" customization items.

I just bought a car for a couple bucks, and now I have to pay almost as much to open a crate which awards like a slot machine, and even if I get a kickass car specific skin...it's extremely unlikely it will be for my new ride...

"Free" is an illusion, gentlemen.

Here's the GOOD hudless video incase you're lazy

Thank you for the link!

I'm still a fan of BF series because of the audio/video quality they bring to the FPS multiplayer table.

That said, they've dropped the ball with RUSH mode after Bad Company 2 and haven't picked it up since. IO thought the BF1 Rush experience in the public beta was WEAK.

I was hopeful that they would revitalize Rush with WW1 trench warfare and the desperation of holding the line or trying to storm through defenses. But my impression was, once again, a focus on making Conquest mode work first with maximum player and vehicle counts...and then attempts to 're-purpose' those maps for Rush mode. But the quality just isn't there, and at this point, pushes me away from buying it.

You're right, in BC2 (and BC for that matter) Rush was the primary game mode, that's what the maps were designed around. People wanted conquest to be the focus as it'd classically been, so they brought back the ultra big conq maps with BF3, BF4, and now BF1.

At least it's not as bad as their TDM/Domnination modes, which are, as i've said many times on here, just a scattering of shipping containers by a flag and presto chango! TDM.

Say what you will about Battlefront, they actually built the maps around the game modes, instead of just making the big map, and squeezing the small modes into the big map. That's the kind of production that will be required for rush to be great again.

Which is a lot of work, You can't just splice one mode's map into another mode. It doesn't really work. I think they do an alright job of it considering, but I really don't see why they think they should care.

What was the #1 complaint about Battlefront? No Maps.

What was the Reality of Battlefront? On launch 4 big maps, and 11 small ones, totalling 15 UNIQUE (non-shared) maps, and then releasing another 3 big ones and 5 small ones for free for around 23 total UNIQUE maps in the vanilla game.

What did everyone see? only 4 "big maps".

That's the reality of designing games for this retarded generation, if you actually deliver a map that's build from the ground up with that particular game mode in mind, then you'll get eaten alive by ignoramuses.

I'd be perfectly happy with 4 RUSH maps, 4 CONQ maps, and 6 TDM/DOM maps. 14 maps on launch, each built by design for that mode, custom catered gameplay experiences, not trying to squeeze every mode under the sun into the same physical map. Every Conq map is MADE for CONQ, they'd all be "good" CONQ maps. And I can see the headlines now: "BF6 HAZ ONLY 4 MAPS, EA IZ THE DEVIL"

Exactly.

Here is how Conquest matches generally breakdown in BF3/BF4/BF1:

A. New players have no idea what class to be, what point should be captured, or how to effectively change the momentum of the match. It looks like chaos to them, but they're having a decent time while getting slaughter because it's a pretty game.

B. A killer squad of uber-experienced players are hogging whatever vehicle is best suited for the map. No one can join their squad or spawn on them. The driver finishes the match with the fewest deaths and his teammates have the highest points in the server. Whether their team wins or loses does not impact their strategy or point totals.

C. Experienced players and left trying to fill in the gaps left by newbs doing nothing helpful and uber-players just helping themselves. But with the unfocused carnage of Conquest, plus the high turnover rate of a 32 player team...maintaining an effective squad is near impossible.

In contrast, Rush forces the situation on both teams with limited access points, limited vehicles and resources, and less time for objectives. All of that leads to teamwork, even in a squad of strangers, and it's possible for single play from a squad or even an individual player to make an impact on the match and change the momentum of battle.

I respect the casual, sandbox nature of Conquest...but disregarding the quality of gaming Rush provides is beyond unfortunate. It's game breaking to me, because I and you know how good Rush once was.
