Based purely on past performance (Blood Bowl, the two Game of Thrones games), I'm not convinced they'll be able to deliver a worthy spiritual successor to DK. I hope I'm wrong, of course.

CK2 has been my gateway into Paradox strategy games, and I'm really looking forward to EU4. Been a few bugs in CK2 for me recently though. Two major ones in The Republic alone, but as I understand it QA is not a particular strength of the studio. Still, I'm willing to tolerate such things for the fun I've already got out of it.

Social pressure means their closest friends Not some abstract community. The inner circle of their monkeysphere, so to speak.

Most cheaters on the Internet would instantly stop if we could get into their inner circle and chastise them there. It doesn't need violence or any other method, chastising them to their CLOSEST friend is all that's needed. Of course, shaming them by real name is the approach vector for that, but in a sense that's like the nuclear weapon ;p

By the way -> http://www.cracked.com/article_14990_what-monkeysphere.html

Well, yes, if a person close to them makes a big deal out of them cheating then they might just stop, but that can't always happen and I don't think it means we shouldn't try to shoot them down where we can. You can't just leave them alone to wreak havoc as they please. It might not stop the dedicated ones, but at least it's a speed bump and it might cause others to stop and consider whether they want to risk losing their legitimately earned progress.

Either way, it's important to show the players that they're doing something. I've seen communities die in a large part because you could cheat or bot without consequence and it was taken advantage of extensively enough that people got sick of it.

Why? Cheaters can only be stopped through social pressure, not via bans..

You think you're going to stop cheaters by chastising them? No... Cheating can't be stopped altogether, but it can be mitigated and minimized by a prompt and firm response from the people who run the game. In my experience, cheaters couldn't care less what the community thinks of them. Depending on the person, they're just out to rustle jimmies or feel powerful and advance faster. The entire act of cheating in a multiplayer game rests on a lack of empathy and concern for the people you're playing with.

How about this, first it was your fault GW2 to begin with. And since somehow you know who did it and if they will follow through, how about your program takes care of it and deletes the gains? I like how they think they can make the mob have morals like this, say "I'm sawries, I promises never again". It's still just a game Anet, sheesh.

Ok thanks for sharing your valuable input.

I got to say I do not get this one at all, some people fell into this unknowingly and bought an item or two from this so called exploit.

Where is Arena nets integrity in all of this? I mean really, were they not the ones that fucked up in the first place with this over site on their part. And now because some people took part in buying even one item are now getting banned even people who only bought one item. Ridiculous!

To me that’s utter crap on Arena nets part. They are the ones who left this in the game to Begin with. It’s not like people used a hack to get those items or the extra karma out of it.

I was not banned, nor did I know anything about this until last night. But still Arena Net needs to take some responsibility over this too. From their point of view everyone’s guilty and to me that’s more than a little disturbing, also because they hold the keys, do what we say or else. Yea, OK!! I’ve just lost some respect for Arena net.

Ive been enjoying this game a lot, but this just sickens me to no end.

I'm pretty sure those who only bought an item or two are not being banned permanently. As for those who heavily exploited it, I say good riddance.

I'll admit to some ignorance about BL2 and ask, aren't they very different games? I thought BL2 was more of a FPS with TL2 being a ARPG. I mean yeah, there is cross-over but they aren't in direct competition are they?

That's just ridiculous. There was never a time when I was torn between firing up Borderlands and Torchlight 1, Titan Quest or any similar ARPG.

Borderlands is a FPS first and foremost. It has a couple of similarities with items and skills in isometric ARPGs but that's it. The mechanics are different and the skillset to play them is different.

The only way they compete is if someone was going to buy both games and discovers that they came out at the same time and their budget is limited.

Maybe they don't compete in your mind, but to me and many others they're part of the same genre and I play them for the same reasons. Just because it's played from the first person perspective and has guns doesn't make it any less of an ARPG.

I tried GW2 at my store today. Aside from the pretty graphics it plays and feels exactly like WoW. Somehow I thought it was going to be more Diablo-esque. Oh well.

I'm not sure how you got that impression. They're utterly different games in many ways; they just happen to belong to the same genre. It's a bit like saying BF3 and CoD feel exactly the same because they're both multiplayer FPS with a leveling system and a similar setting.

I'm not sure what kind of point some people are trying to make. Because Windows 8 is designed for the computer illiterate, and they make up the 'average user' demographic, we shouldn't voice our objections to it? Nobody's saying Microsoft is making a bad business decision. We're saying that we don't like the steps they are taking towards the Apple walled garden approach because it might be bad for us in the long run. Seniors and some guy's mom are irrelevant to my concerns.

It's really quite good as a train sim. I know video games are supposed to be all about explosions and violence, but sometimes playing something that has nothing to do with either of those things can be a nice way to relax.

And all from a simple, yet irrefutable, idea: "On the internet, they only way someone knows you are a gay gamer is if you decide it's so important that you must tell them..."

Or if you mention your SO, or if you happen to remark that someone or a character in a game is attractive, or if you mention in passing any number of things from your daily life that identify your sexuality but you have the luxury of taking all of that for granted. So yeah, if you just ignore anything but talking about games, you could probably hide it. Most people, straight and gay, don't do that, nor should they have to.

So what? If you're actively trying to keep a group of people relegated to the status of second class citizens, you deserve to be called out on it. Stop with the false equivalence and changing the subject. You said it was a strawman, now back it up.

I think it is hilarious that you would advocate for tolerance while being totally intolerant of opposing viewpoints.

So... if somebody attacks me and I defend myself, does that make me guilty of assault? I'm not advocating that you should be stripped of your right to be a bigot, but if you're going to go around slandering, defaming, and belittling a portion of the population just for peacefully living their lives in a way that you disapprove of, don't be surprised when people call you out on that behavior.

How is it slander and defamation, you ask? Well, when anti-gay activists say that homosexuality leads to things like child molestation, spousal abuse, substance addiction, the downfall of society, and basically everything negative that they can possibly think of, and that's not true, then slander and defamation is exactly what it is. If it's against your religion then fine, don't be gay. You don't even have to be friends with gays, just stay away. But when you lie to and mislead the rest of the population in an attempt to ruin the lives of the people you don't like, I've got a big fucking problem with you.

As for the equal rights thing, I suppose you don't see anti-miscegenation laws as discriminatory in any way, huh?

Exactly. The guy just seems like an incredible dick to me. He needs to lose a pile of money and get the shit beat out of him to teach him some humility.

The irony here is intentional I assume?

Besides, Notch isn't boasting. He's saying he'd rather spend all his money fighting these guys than taking the cowards path and settling out of court. If that was the attitude everyone had, patent trolls would all be out of business.

But thats okay, continue wishing violence on people.

There's nothing ironic. I can be angry and hostile but I'm not a snide, condescending asshole who thinks he's smarter and cooler than everyone else. And yeah, sometimes some people really do just need a good asskicking to come down to what the rest of us call reality.

What exactly has Notch done to deserve an asskicking, or when has he given the impression that he's such a dick? If it's happened I've never seen it, and I follow Minecraft pretty closely...

I felt like GTA4 went a few steps backwards in terms of fun factor. I got tired of being a millionaire with nothing to spend the money on but hot dogs and ammo. You don't have to go completely over the top like Saints Row, but at least give me something like permanent upgrades, properties and/or a territory system again.

Despite that, it's still one of the most balanced free to play games out there. I don't know many others that are as satisfying to play without paying a dime, so long as you aren't racing in a straight line for tier 10. Serious competitive play might be another thing altogether, though.

Society trends on a delayed reaction to systemic changes; can you say the outcome of these high level things?

No?

So how about contribute instead of being the next moron on the anti christian train. LOL

This is nothing but an anecdote, but all I can say is that, having been exposed to violent and 'extreme' video games from an early age, none of it has ever influenced me to anything I would consider immoral. Hell, I've never even been in an actual physical altercation of any kind, nor have I been desensitized to actual instances of suffering and abuse, despite having seen it and even taken part in it on occasion in video games. Of course, I'm sure there are people somewhere who do not have the same clear delineation between what's real and what's not, but I don't think we should be censoring our media purely for those people, and better parenting would take care of most of that.

As a result, I just don't see what all of the fuss is about. I certainly don't want those types of games to stop being made, because they're fun. Could they be a little less in your face about it at E3 and such? Sure... but if they choose not to then... what, do you want it banned or something?

What is reddit and why do people use it? I've seen it a few times and don't understand the draw.

It's almost like crowd sourced news, you share information and pose questions/ideas. Almost like Digg with a better comment/rating system. You can make your own themed reddits as well. It is a really interesting site with a pretty diverse crowd covering a massive range of topics, I really enjoy it. You can customize the landing page to include only info from the reddit topics you want which is a huge timesaver for many hobbies. Think of it a bit like this site (mainly summaries from other sources) except its customizable.

You have to kind of use it for awhile to get it. I didn't really get the big deal either until I registered and spent a few weeks checking things out.

Yeah. Several years ago I was a Digg user, visited Reddit a few times and thought it was ugly as shit and 'why would anybody use this?' It grew on me, though. And with the sheer number of subreddits out there, there's something for everybody.

I'm sorry, but this is like saying that /b/ is the sum total of 4chan. To give a better idea of what I mean, yes, most of the default subreddits are shit, or full of shallow memes and in the case of /r/politics sensationalist, self-righteous headlines, but compare those to some of the deeper subreddits like askscience or history or DepthHub, or any of the 'Porn' series of image subreddits (which aren't actually porn, btw), one can go on and on. Generally the more popular they are, and the more lax they are about keeping to a theme and encouraging quality posts, the more corrupt they become.
