RE; Unity Fiasco

Oh look, former EA head John Riccitiello is involved......I am shocked and besides myself!! Dozey

What is the fiasco? Here is an excerpt from their last quarter financial statement: "Loss from operations was $171.2 million, or 53% of revenue"
That only 5% of their workforce is being laid off is pretty good I would say.

T-Mobile is happily selling customers’ app habits to advertisers.

From the article:
"Customer data is anonymized, and it’s pooled together with others of similar interests and behaviors, so companies can’t buy a specific user’s app history."

Anonymized and pooled together. Who cares about this? This is not what is implied with the headline, even though it is technically correct.

Lol, he drove a whole 20 miles the day before, to go to work.
It doesn't matter whether that child drove 5 miles or 55, crossing the state line is crossing the state line.
Glad to know it was for work, did that job guarding a parking lot and murdering people come w/health insurance?
You pick the flimsiest hills to lean on.

You seem to really cling to this technicality that he lives right on the state border and has to cross it to go to work. Have you actually looked at this on a map? Try googling "Antioch, Illinois, to Kenosha, Wisconsin"

This has already been discussed in detail in court where he was found not guilty, I recommend you just read up on what really happened.

30 seconds is a thing because it’s a thing.
Tesla‘s vehicles have been found to shut off the advanced driver-assistance system, Autopilot, around one second before impact, according to the regulators.
The NHTSA order required manufacturers to disclose crashes where the software was in use within 30 seconds of the crash, in part to mitigate the concern that manufacturers would hide crashes by claiming the software wasn’t in use at the time of the impact.
But Tesla themselves collect statistics about crashes and use the methodology
"we count any crash in which Autopilot was deactivated within 5 seconds before impact"
so it's not like they are ignoring these incidents in their own statistics.

Autopilot is deactivated when the driver steps on the brakes, therefore it would make sense that majority of the crashes would have the Autopilot deactivated right before the crash.

So tesla is a fool for following the NHTSA order?

Uhhh.. no? I was highlighting in bold that the order is for data where the autopilot was used up to 30 seconds before the crash. A lot can happen in 30 seconds.

My beef with the statistics is this:
  • Only Tesla seems to be able to give accurate data to NHTSA
Honda: reports to NHTSA are based on unverified customer statements about whether automated systems were running at the time of a crash
  • The data includes a very long timeframe, where the usage of driving assistants might be totally irrelevant to the eventual crash
  • It does not say what they mean by crash, does it include accidents where the car is being hit?
  • No normalization of the data with regards to number of cars by manufacturer or distance driven.
Such normalization would not be possible anyway since the other manufacturers are probably under-reporting

With these meaningless raw counters the journalist writes an article the heavily implies that Tesla Autopilot is causing accidents, and especially much more frequently than the competitors.

Some quotes from the reporting on this "breaking news":

The NHTSA order required manufacturers to disclose crashes where the software was in use within 30 seconds of the crash

Tesla's crash number also may be high because it uses telematics to monitor its vehicles and get real-time crash reports. Other automakers don't have such capability, so their reports may come slower or crashes may not be reported at all, NHTSA said.

The data does not lend itself easily to comparisons between different manufacturers, because it does not include information such as how many vehicle miles the different driver-assistance systems were used across or how widely they are deployed across carmakers’ fleets.
Yeah... but let's report this as a comparison anyway, right!!

Don't forget to send a hitman to your competitors! I'd play it!

Isn't this a bit pointless? Why install an unsigned executable downloaded from the internet when you can just as well get the ISO straight from the source?

I've looked into this, hoping to leverage the hardware for other purposes when the inevitable crash comes. Prices will dip for GPUs, but there won't be a fire sale. Most of the hardware will end up in landfills or in Chinese 'recycling' centers.

I don't understand why they would end up in landfills, who wouldn't like to recoup the hardware cost?

How to enable God Mode on Windows 11, and what is it? Thanks Neutronbeam.

Now this is just too cool, love it!

Edit:
TLDR?
Create an empty flolder on the desktop and rename it to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
You now have a shortcut folder to over 200 windows settings, and you can drag each one to the desktop to create a direct shortcut.
You can just delete the folder whenever you want without affecting anything.

USB Type-C Connector Could Become the Standard for All Device Thanks to EU.

I hope not, lightning connector is so much better form factor. Never understood why the USB-C port design needed to have a fragile middle on the device itself, which makes it a pain to repair if it breaks. The lightning port is much more robust, where the part that is most likely to break is the cable which you can just replace for under $10.

Notepad++ fo' life!

I have been using Notepad++ for over 15 years and it is a really solid, free alternative to basic notepad.
In addition to Notepad++ (daily user here), what IDE do you guys use?

I don't know if I'd consider vscode as an IDE, but it's really the only source code editor I need to develop in most languages

My main IDE is Eclipse, but I also use Visual Studio for the occasional C# work and VSCode for Python.
I absolutely call VSCode an IDE, the extensions can make it a beast!
