That's not too bad. Tribes: Ascend is still surviving with about what looks like 100 active players

Of course T:A is free-to-play.

It's wise of them to prevent playerbase fragmentation by allowing non-DLC players to join DLC players.

It's unwise of them to charge for this DLC, because I'm pretty sure their online playerbase is circling the drain.

What were people expecting here, Mass Effect?

Of course. This is the major problem here and the main source of the unwarranted, baseless hate that this title is receiving (ignorance level: RNC).

Seems that a chunk of gaming public simply can not stand even a thought of allowing for any other playing style than Ye Ole scripted-linear-guided experiences that we have been mostly fed for over a decade. Watching this whole process is actually quite fascinating, from a psychological point of view.

It`s quite paradoxical too: back in the early days we dreamed of complex worlds infused with complex gameplay, and thought that only hardware is the limit. Turned out that what people really want is more polygons, safe corridors and "stories", not actual gaming systems and true freedom. Pretty sad, if you ask me.

There is indeed a lot riding on the success/failure of this game. If it sinks, we won`t see any other project of this kind in a AAA wrapper for a long time, it will be all strictly underground. If it succeeds however, it will hopefully inspire other major studios to borrow from the things it make it so exciting and fresh.

So just hoping that Hello Games didn`t mess the basics up. If they managed to get the trade, fighting etc on at least "okay" level, then this game will be a modern classic, well above all your Witchers, GTAs and suchlike.

No. No, no, no.

We STILL dream of complex worlds with complex gameplay, even procedural worlds.

Some of us have enough experience however to distinguish when a game does offer that (Dwarf Fortress), and when a game is a spiritual sequel to Spore.

In fact when Spore was being marketed and everyone was ecstatic about it, I saw it exactly for what it was. This game is no different.

If you want to create complex procedural worlds, then your interactions with them should be complex, varied and meaningful. I see no evidence of that in "No Man's Content".

As for the upgrade/trading system... Elite: Desertous had that aplenty. It was a boring piece of crap game that I wasted money on, because its creator decided to recreate the experience of my ZX Spectrum childhood EXACTLY, with all the meniality and waiting that it involved.

"No Man's Gameplay" team is just a bunch of pie-in-the-sky programmers, who have idealized vision of their product that it will never deliver. However their presentations were enough to impress the clueless old execs at Sony, which is why the project will be seen to completion.

And then the public will see it.

I for one would like to discourage shit like this where developers severely misrepresent their game in order to get pre-orders. This will be, in many ways, "Aliens: Colonial Marines" type situation.

Except, if it's released on Steam, Steam now offers refunds.

I know what you guys are saying. I thought the same about diablo in the 90s. I could not explain why just clicking was so fun, and I resented the game for it. Fact is, I was totally wrong. It's enough to explore and collect stuff. People are simple creatures and will enjoy countless hours just looking for new boxes to open.

Now that's what I call reductionism. The randomization in Diablo 1 played a functional role which directly impacted the gameplay, rather than a mostly cosmetic role.

Random dungeons directly shaped how each game went, and created a tangible variety of experiences, as opposed to illusory variety of "No Man's Content".

The random content was also balanced with plenty of crafted content, such as unique monsters, char. classes and sufficiently developed combat mechanics/variety.

The process of leveling/advancing was also a large factor because it provided tangible benefits of learning new abilities, qualifying for better items, and just getting stronger in general.

"No Man's Content" just doesn't look like it has nearly enough of hand-crafted content in order to direct this game's experience in such a rewarding way. It will be just one of those sandbox games which offer a thousand different ways to get bored.

I once wrote an email web client called Gigo based on that

Hehe

But it's true. "No Man's Content" is going to put a huge dent in the value of the term "procedural" when used to hype any future game.

Apparently there are many incredibly naive people in this thread.

Their store is not just an optional add-on. It's not just gonna sit there. It will grow with every major patch, like some sort of fungus.

Eventually there will be a "glitch", for example Steam notifications in-game will drop the framerate to a crawl.

By that point NVidia cards supporting DX 12.2 or whatever will be out, and MS will say, "due to radical optimizations in DX12.2 framework, it is no longer feasible to do shared rendering".

Gabe Newell will scramble to fix it, maybe come up with some sort of hack. Which will work for most games but not all. Annoyances begin.

Then M$ will say something like, "due to changes in networking stack to increase security, Win10 no longer allows firewall punching", which will destroy SteamPlay for a number of games.

Valve will then be forced to pay money for more servers and try to transparently emulate former SteamPlay peer-to-peer functionality that way, creating more lag, and it won't work for some games too.

Another annoyance.

The chain will continue until there is one annoyance after another.

Note that these aren't exact perfect examples of what will happen, but it is the general way in which a company of this magnitude can weasel its way into strangling the competition.

They are not going to "kill" Steam support, they're just employing the same anti-competitive practices that they got sued for with Internet Explorer.

There's a HUGE advantage to this "bundling" approach in capturing the uneducated masses. For example, Bluray won the war against HD-DVD largely because it was made a part of the PS3 console.

As for you thinking people are paranoid... you're using the OS which has shown to be built on the policy of ignoring your decisions and wrangling more control away from you as the user. It is no longer your servant, and the updates you'll be force-fed from Microsoft for this "OS as a service" will keep pulling the carpet from under your feet, reverting your settings, changing the UI, etc etc.

Keyloggers used to be classified as malicious software, you know. But I guess the AV bigwigs like Symantec and Kaspersky won't be flagging these modules in Windows 10 as such.

Heh, the hate for win10 on here is so absurd. If you have a smartphone, of any variety, which I am 100% sure you do, that thing is tracking you way more than win10 on its default settings. I'm honestly not sure what the hate is all about, aside from "waaaah something new, I must hate it!".

A desktop OS serves a very different purpose from a portable convenience toy. I don't keep important files on my smartphone. Win10 EULA allows Microsoft (aka NSA) to take any of your files at will.

This means they can steal your intellectual property, or even flag you as a danger to the regime if, say, you develop an algorithm which just happens to decrypt government protocols or breach the same kind of systems the government uses. Even if you do it as a security researcher.

The predictable retort "if you got nothing to hide, you got nothing to be afraid of" is dangerous on too many levels which are far better explained everywhere else on the Internet. It is what allows totalitarian oppression to roam free. We all have things in our lives which fall into the gray zone of the law, or simply things we don't want everyone to see.

Win10 can also uninstall software Microsoft doesn't like. And unlike smartphones, it actually has a keylogger.

"“When you interact with your Windows device by speaking, writing (handwriting), or typing, Microsoft collects speech, inking, and typing information"

Even if we discard the possiblity of maliciousness from Microsoft (which would be incredibly naive)... do you like the idea of your bank passwords or other sensitive information being flung around the Internet using some unknown encryption protocol? Do you even want to gamble with that?

Do you want to trust the OS, which allows you to "disable" the spying features, but then continues to send your information to its maker regardless?

An OS which treats you like a moron who doesn't know what's good for him, and whose choices don't matter?

The answer, of course, depends on how much you match their intended demographic of ignorant proles.

Anyone who pretends that Trump and Hillary are "two evils", is a low-information voter.

The information is out there, easier to get than ever before, but it is absolutely amazing how millions of people form their opinions on Trump and Hillary based on what they're being fed by the American, East Germany-style, government-media complex.

For a rational thinker, who is not swayed by soundbytes and "gotchas", who can actually weigh the gross total good and bad that each person has done in their life, there is no choice but Trump.

Hillary = Obama = a thousand years of darkness. She's a mentally ill, power-sucking husk which exploits youthful delusions of the ObamaJugend in order to flood this country with terrorist cells, which to her is an acceptable casualty on the path toward ensuring a permanent "Democratic" victory in the voting booth.

At this point in history, a complete role reversal has occurred.

Democrats have become the oppressive establishment which wants to censor everything and control our lives, and modern Conservatives are the rebellious rabble-rousers. Finally there's someone out there to represent the silent majority who doesn't take the best country in the world for granted. We are no longer silent.

If you're happy with Win7 or you have older software/hardware that's incompatible with Win10, there is no compelling reason to upgrade. Windows 7 will continue to get fixes until 2020 ! By then, you'll probably need a new machine anyway, and you'll have to upgrade to a new Windows.

Those 4 years will fly by before you know it. If you care about stability or privacy perhaps you should start migrating off the platform to something under control or one you have the source code, such as Linux.

One way or the other your going to have to make a transition as the cost of keeping up with modern standards.

Win8.1 is the intermediary as it supports the same partition types and a lot of the same hardware as Win10.

In fact, by disabling signature checking I successfully installed a Win10 WiFi driver on Windows 8.1... because Acer is an asshole which removed all Win8.1 drivers from their site.

After that, I might try Win10 LTSB edition, which by that point should have a lot of techie packet snooping research done on it, and could maybe possibly kind of be TAMED, as it is more of an old-school OS rather than "OS as a service".

Or, go to Linux, yes.

Seems like a good move on twitters part though I think Milo is great. A massive self-admitted arsehole who has gone on the record of "not liking nice people" and thinks anyone who ever voices any compassion for anyone or any cause is just virtue signaling and trying to get laid. So not someone you would want to have a beer with probably but his writing is sharp and his gay jokes are hilarious so I hope he never stops.

I've watched many Milo speeches and have never seen him claim he "doesn't like nice people", or thinks that compassion is virtue signaling.

He seems like a very nice, personable individual.

He does label the modern "journalism" as virtue signalers, because they are just that. Instead of pursuing factual truth, "we report you decide", they create their own narratives in order to elevate their self-importance and virtue-signal to their peers as some sort of holier-than-thou competition in "getting the right message across".

I would love to hang out with him. I love truth-tellers, they're a rare breed.
