Personally, I'd wait until it's about $5 or so. I wish I had, then I wouldn't feel so taken. It's boring as hell, both spaceflight and combat, with the most interesting part being trying to outguess the autopilot to avoid overshooting your destination. No "strategic" layer on top of that is going to help.

What exactly is there available to play at the moment? I haven't been following development closely, and it's hard to tell what is actually there right now.
Jack - I quite agree. The game is awesome - a good solid foundation.
FD just need some PR lessons (and I in some self control) Speaking of which my "stance" of demanding a refund will hurt forum members : I have a few +1s which I gave out and a refund would mean they can't go either. What is worth more - the money back into my hands (of which now FD won't even blink at) or the chance for others to meet DB ?
Sadly life out here in the UAE does things to your mind, more so with the job I have ... Whilst I am not looking for excuses I can feel the rages coming on which is messing with my thoughts. I have sent a PM to Michael asking that he suspend my account for a few weeks : a bit of enforced vacation is probably a good idea for me right now.
Things will turn out OK .. they always do.

The vast majority of serious gamers are online all the time.
Guess I'm not a "serious gamer" by that definition. Braben really should have advertised it as online required from day one. So what happens when they shut the servers down at some point?

Kickstarter, early access and 'paying for beta' is based on faith. The DEVs broke a promise and selling point to this game. It DOESNT matter if you can live with it or if that particular broken promise doesn't matter to you. It means another reason not to trust kickstarter/early access/paid beta. A few of these can easily destroy the whole thing. THAT should matter to you. Think beyond your own personal little 'oh i have internet, get over it' attitude and think a tid bit bigger.

Yup.
1. I am often places where there is no internet connection when I play due to work.
2. I rarely play online games. I'm pretty much an SP player and have no desire to play with strangers.
So play solo online? That's what I do when I don't want to interact with other players.
Play solo online with no internet connection? How, exactly?

Spot the educated SC fanboy.
Perhaps you should lose the invective and realize that despite your attempt to defend another lame developer everyone else is laughing at you.
Most of these kickstarters end up with unsupported promised features. The developers of Elite are no different. There are better space games out there, so in the end it is no big deal.

That said I think most of the "shitstorm" is down to people having knee-jerk reactions and throwing their toys out of their pram.

This one went from the "too expensive/risky to back" to "wish I had backed it" to now "glad I didn't back it" pile.
As an online only title, I'm now thinking there's other games I'd rather play - given I prefer single player games. (And no - forced single player online is not a single player game)

Hrm, interest in this game continues to drop. I am not a backer of this, so it just a minor annoyance so far, but I really have no desire to have other players, let alone thousands, in my world, so solo play was all I cared about in the first place.
I'll wait to hear more, but I'm leaning towards skipping this now.
You can still play solo online.
Well, sure, but your universe is STILL affected by the actions of other players, according to the little blurb there. That sounds like serious negative aspect to me, but as I said, I'll wait and see how it actually turns out.

It's meant to mirror the real Universe and it does it amazingly well.
Also PG doesn't mean random. Also it has more than enough content for release.
But let's say it didn't, how would they hide it with multiplayer?
You make zero sense.
They hide it with multiplayer by having you interact with other players who will claim certain areas of the universe and create clans which can engage in conflicts. Add a few overreaching features that tie it together and you have an infinite amount of free content. There is nothing wrong with this of course, but if you focus on this it means you don't focus on a single player element that requires more time and effort to flesh out.
As for PG not meaning random - again I've heard this before with games in the past and while on paper it doesn't, in application you get a lifeless universe filled with template stations with pre-staged defend/attack quests and little to no actual content.
Mirroring the universe sounds great and all - if you plan on spending 5 lifetimes exploring a gameworld. I was hoping for a more concise and reasonable amount of content that a development team can actually produce, this is more of a pretty sounding line to add to the feature list while it detracts from the actual experience by spreading their work thin.

Come on, for real? Having it be completely off-line is that big of a deal?
Yup.
1. I am often places where there is no internet connection when I play due to work.
2. I rarely play online games. I'm pretty much an SP player and have no desire to play with strangers.

From what I have seen this game is going to have very little actual content in terms of story/quests/characters and RPG development. You will explore a randomly generated (procedural nonsense) universe of emptiness. Having it multiplayer only allows them to hide this fact and this doesn't surprise me.
I never understood why people think an infinite number of star systems is a good thing - it's like Daggerfall's claim that their game world is half as big as the landmass of the UK. Real good that does me when its filled with randomly generated fluff.

I should also clarify my feelings about always-on online DRM (and I'm still not yet convinced piracy had anything to do with it in this case). If a game requires a constant connection to a server just to verify legitimate use, this is bullshit DRM. If it requires a constant connection, but uses that connection to provide features and enhancements that wouldn't be possible without that network connection, that's not the same thing at all. Give and take.

I don't know, maybe lying to all their kickstarter backers is a start, to the point the one who gave the most money for their KS project is demanding a refund?
Damn fanboys...
