I just finished the main story to Grim Dawn this past weekend and I can definitely see the need for a better stash solution. Especially for anyone who wants to keep grinding bounties.

Not sure about the money thing though, haven't seen or felt it yet (level 50). I did filter out non-magical items really early on though, so buying out the stash space was never really an issue. Now I just need to convince myself to load up a different character haha

No. People who play Rock Band today are the niche players who continued to purchase DLC on the regular and replaced their instruments as many times as necessary along the way. That and karaoke fans. What other option scratches that same itch?

Harmonix dropped the ball and decided to try catering to the masses like it's still 2008.

I will admit their whole crowdfunding / investment angle was interesting and I've considered the investment side. I'm just not confident enough in the current product at this point.

I was also under the impression their campaign only showed the amount of money pledged from the crowdfunding side and not the actual investment side. So they might be closer to their goal than appears.

Either way having to repurchase all my old DLC is a deal breaker (at least not without a significant discount).

I'm glad to see there are owners here on BN but has anyone actually played it yet?

The video looks good and it's been on my Steam wishlist for a while now but I agree with Cutter, that font hurts my crappy eyes. Apparently it's possible to scale the font but not the UI (yet) though the devs are apparently aware and working on it. It seems to be a common complaint on the Steam forums (can't say I blame them). I'll be holding off until it's addressed, while the dialog itself seems 'legible' that action / combat log is just gibberish.

Oculus Rift support? Still no regular online play yet. No importing RB3 content to the current product. Drums are still problematic out of the box (I know latency / calibration issues are on the list of fixes for next week's update but whether or not it's good enough is yet to be determined).

So, yes Harmonix... get cracking on VR... fucking genius priorities right there.

Right, and if there had been armed people at that concert hall maybe it wouldn't have been a bloodbath because the terrorists would have rightfully had their lives ended before they got going. Sounds good to me.

Are you actually advocating for armed guards in every public place? Because the alternative seems far more insane. In the heat of the moment when one person starts shooting at another and then someone else starts firing and then a different person pulls out another gun and someone else is getting shot and more guns start appearing in hands. Who do you shoot at? How can you really know who's trying to kill rather than survive?

Though I do agree with your other comment about eliminating ISIS at its head as reasoning with them seems impossible.

Fucking CNN: "There is no credible or specific threat in the United States" NO FUCKING SHIT, a Heavy Metal Concert in PARIS was attacked. A soccer/football game was attacked, why the fuck would it have anything to do with us?!?

The Eagles of Death Metal are not a metal band nor was it a metal show, but they are an American band (and a super fun old school rock and roll one to boot). People were there to dance and have fun. If I lived in France I would have been at that show. There's also always the possibility that there could have been a more coordinated plan as well, give it a few hours while all the attention is focused across the pond then start new incidents in another nation.

The battery compartment has a slide switch that pops it off? Not sure if it was always that way but definitely not hard to take off. Getting the batteries out definitely takes a little more force if you don't push the tabs in the proper direction.

I've been using the gamepad to control windows outside of the Steam BPM and it works flawlessly so I'm not anticipating any trouble playing Civ5 or an RTS. Haven't decided if I like it set as trackball or mouse control yet but its perfectly accurate in either mode. I will definitely configure Civ5 later and let you know how it works out.

Cool, thanks for the insight. Figure I'll try my luck at getting one over the weekend.

I got one of the early pre-order Alienware Steam Machines a month ago, so have been playing around with it for a while now... The controller took me a fair bit of getting used to, but once I did, damn it works well! Especially for games expecting a mouse... In ones expecting an Xbox controller, it can be kind of weird, with the right trackpad emulating a stick... But, I mostly got used to that, too... But, it's far more natural when it's replacing a mouse...

So having said that, how well does the controller work for something like Civilization 5, a Total War title, or an old school RTS like Age of Empires 2? It seems most reviews I've found focused on using it to replace a traditional gamepad with a more multi-platform / console oriented title (like Tomb Raider or Assassin's Creed).

Another potential issue I read about in previews was access to the battery compartment saying that it felt like you were breaking the controller the first few times you had to open it. Have you dealt with that yet? Or has that been refined leading up to release?

I hope Blizzard is going to let existing owners download the updated versions for free.

I'm cautiously optimistic on that side. On one hand it would be great fan service for the old school gamers who helped build the company into the giant it became. On the other hand, depending on the level of modernization, the conversions might not be that cheap.

Though I did end up getting a 'free' copy of Brood War when I registered the serial code from my original Starcraft v1.0 disc (from a Protoss box), so generosity is a possibility. But I would also be totally fine paying like $5 for an upgrade patch to my existing product.

I'm also wondering if the reason there's no early Warcraft and Diablo is because of the whole Blizzard / Blizzard North division or if they're just waiting to see the reception the bigger titles of the classic franchises receive.

The thing with ARs is that you don't have to use them, but it certainly may make the journey easier if you do use them. I only ever had 2 people equipped with them. Others I kept well-rounded, so my squad was using a wide assortment of weapons, such as miniguns, melee weapons, sub-machine guns, energy weapons, and a sniper rifle. There is an energy weapon you can get, if you do the right steps, that is far more powerful than any AR in the game.

Exactly. My only complaint with the weapons was that an upgraded assault rifle had about the same range as a sniper rifle with the added bonus of burst fire. It essentially made snipers useless, especially in the late game, aside from using them to trigger combat from as far away as possible (maybe a half dozen tiles more than an AR).

I used a variety of weapons as well and found them all to be effective in particular circumstances (shotgun at point blank, SMG at short range etc.)

I quite enjoyed it, but never finished it. Once I finally made it to Hollywood after ~ 60 hours, and realized it was a monstrously massive place with tons of factions and inter-connected quests, I just gave up. I'm already not a fan of huge cities in RPGs with too much stuff to do at once, and getting me to another such city 60 hours in really doesn't tickle my funny bone. (Pillars of Eternity had the exact same problem for me.)

However, up until that point I thought it was an excellent game. Hopefully they've done some balancing with regards to the skills. It seemed fine in the first area, but once you got to Cali, 95% of all skill checks were at 10+ difficulty, which was ridiculous.

From what I recall getting to Hollywood was about 2/3rds of the way (took me about 90 hours to complete the game and I tried to do as much as possible). So it wouldn't be another 60 hours but still substantial. While there was a lot to do Hollywood felt like it connected more efficiently (not unlike the rail yard section that felt like a marathon that never ended).

As for the skill checks I think the intention was to really specialize your characters and/or use trinkets to boost skills. The story also provided compelling reasons to revisit most of the early Cali locations as well (ideally once you leveled up a few times and maxed out particular skills).

I don't regret playing through it early on and I'm definitely looking forward to playing the DC over the coming winter. Unlike most games it's not really possible to see everything on the first go around.

That's not to say the voice actors concerns aren't legitimate. But it's like getting insurance for the paint job instead of the actual car.

weirdly, most reviews make no mention of this omission

It's really not that weird if you think about it.

(hint: $$$$$)

Or that Harmonix has been quite open about the fact that it wouldn't be an option at launch and at this point the reviewers see it as a non-issue. I think it's a safe bet that most early adopters of RB4 have played one of the earlier titles and have informed themselves. The 4 biggest points that were made about it early on were
- DLC carry over
- 'platform' longevity
- No Pro-Instruments / keyboards
- No Online play

I understand it affects some people, it affects me too, but they obviously see the server traffic - if it was that popular would I really have kept running into the same players on a semi-regular basis? I think it's a case where the people who played online used it a lot, but not many actually did. They also seem to be pushing the core experience this time around as a more social / in-person party game where online play isn't essential.

They've also made it clear that online play is not off the table and could likely return in the future. That might be why the reviews are just dealing with the actual current functionality and not commenting on unresolved features.

The real question is will the initial launch provide enough success to justify continued development of the 'platform'.

Also poking around their forums today it seems that there's some unofficial functionality on the PS4 for the Midi-Pro-Adapter for drummers. I also saw a clip of someone using an RB3 keyboard through a bunch of other wi-fi controllers to get some drum functionality but no actual keyboard gameplay. While the catalog for keys based music is limited (and likely never being fully ported) it might make for an alternative controller for guitar / bass at some point down the road.
