7. Re: Serious Sam 4 Gameplay Footage Jun 19, 2018, 00:14 jacobvandy

Let's be frank, Serious Sam is only still around because of a) its small but rabid cult following and b) the nostalgia factor for anyone else looking to play more of this "old-school shooter." Neither one of those groups wants to see the gameplay change, like at all... They tried mixing it up with SS3, remember? Everyone hated it. Taking those same, dumb old enemies and just letting you slaughter more of them than ever is pretty much exactly what they should be doing.

Pretty much, yeah. TESO is a pretty good MMO, but it still operates within the traditional confines of that genre. We have yet to see an MMO which succeeds in breaking that aging mold.

3. Re: It Came from E3 2018, Part 7 Jun 15, 2018, 17:20 jacobvandy

Well, I can't speak to the "vibe" of being there in person, but MS put on the best 90-minute show by a fair margin. I can understand why Xbox owners might be disappointed because there were only a few real exclusives (and of those Halo was barely an announcement/teaser), but they showed tons of new games and paid handsomely to ensure a lot of them were first-time reveals.

Sony had some cool stuff, too, but their experimental theater bullshit translated very poorly to the online stream where the vast majority of people were watching, while also taking time away from showing the actual games. For that reason, I'd probably rank them second-to-last in front of EA. Why they felt it was a good idea to waste 10 minutes on the mobile abomination that is the new Command & Conquer is beyond me... But otherwise, the most interesting announcement out of there came from the fucking audience, lol.

Bethesda was solid. A bit of a rocky start with that awkward Andrew WK performance and 80% of their speakers being really, really bad at speaking, but RAGE 2 looks great, new DOOM is going Hell on Earth, and king of the nerds Todd Howard probably should just handle the whole thing from now on with how much he killed it in the latter half.

I mentioned here before how my favorite parts of the Ubisoft show were related to further Nintendo cross-overs, but the Division 2 and AC:Odyssey are looking good to me as well. It was kind of neat to see some legit celebrities there on stage, but also weird because what they're bringing to the table seems gimmicky. Frodo is trying to make FMV games cool again and that man-child from Inception is crowd-sourcing BG&E 2 assets.. But they gave away For Honor for free, so that's cool, I guess. Another overall solid showing.

Seemed to be a good amount of whinging at the Nintendo showcase since they focused so much on the new Smash Bros. instead of announcing new things, but I think people forget that E3 is really not that important to them in terms of announcements. They have the same exact sort of direct-to-streaming news reels several times a year, and the last one in March or April had done the SSB reveal leading up to the deep-dive and tournament this week. So spreading it all out like this makes it seem less impactful as a whole, but they really are having a very good second year for the Switch and there could be even more in store for the fall.

I noticed Square-Enix had their own similar stream on the schedule for the first time this year, but it was mostly just more details on games already shown by Microsoft the day before. I was hoping for a peek at the upcoming Avengers game, but they didn't even mention it! Sheeit...

Good - Microsoft
Okay - Bethesda, Ubisoft, Nintendo
Bad - Sony, EA, Square-Enix

Oh yeah, the PC Gaming Show, LOL. Uh, I'm glad it's still there, and some mid-tier independent guys like Tripwire and Coffee Stain get some attention, but it might as well not be. A major sponsor was notably absent, so they had to bring on the Drake's Cakes duck mascot and a mouthy female co-host in a mini-skirt to dance with him, and most of the games shown had paid for the privilege... Maybe let's put that in its own 'Ugly' category.

They call Starfield a next-generation game, so I hope that means a new engine. Then TES VI would of course use that one.

I'll admit, including Star Fox in the Switch version took Starlink from "meh" to "pre-ordered" for me. Also pretty stoked for the DK expansion for Mario + Rabbids; it was really cool when they performed the score for the trailer live on stage.

They were making real games before Goat Simulator, lol, they just happened to find some crazy viral success with that one. Which was nice, I guess, since it took them from financial hardship to now publishing some other indie games as well as their own.

I definitely agree that this one looks pretty good, in fact it's probably my favorite thing from the PC Gaming Show today.

MS got first whack at it yesterday, but the more in-depth footage and announcement today says PS4 and Steam also.

If there's any significant amount of story content in this rogue-lite challenge mode, they certainly didn't make that clear in the trailer. What they did get across pretty well is that you won't be taking your sweet time to explore, reading emails and using stealth, it's all about fast-paced, non-stop action. They literally describe it as a "mad dash to escape."

I won't be paying $20 for this and PVP multiplayer, that's for sure. I will most likely replay the base game sometime in survival mode and check out NG+, though (those are the features of the free update).

This E3 was 99% disappointment and 1% ecstasy. This really might be the right time to give up gaming and maybe come back in 3 years.

I was hoping for some story DLC, even if it was a separate thing from the main game... There were plenty of people who lived on the station that would have been great candidates for something like that, a few of which were still alive while you were awake and exploring. But this was probably easier.

They said they will have dedicated servers running for it, but as we've seen with some other games in the past, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to have your own. Hopefully they talk more about that soon.

So, Fallout 76 IS an ARK/Rust/Etc sandbox survival game, with dozens of players (not hundreds or thousands). They showed a lot of stuff, including possibility for PVP, but I really want to know whether they'll let you host your own server and/or play offline. My own interest will wane a bit, and I know many others will be turned off completely, if you can't do that or at the very least be able to select a PVE-only server. You can play by yourself and do quests/story stuff, but how enjoyable is that really going to be with other random fucks ganking you at every turn, up to and including being able to NUKE YOUR BASE?

They were saying that playing alone is going to be more challenging, so I'm guessing it's made for co-op but supports loners. What I'm still wondering is whether it's just you or your group out there in the world (Division), or if they'll have a bunch of others roaming around, too (Destiny).

From the debut at the Xbox show, seems like FO76 may be more of the same, thank god. Four times more (bigger) than FO4, Todd said specifically. I guess they could announce some kind of multiplayer tonight, but that's definitely not all there is to it.

Otherwise, Dying Light 2 topped it for me. I had no idea they signed up Chris Avellone to help with the story, and they explicitly showed how big of an impact choices you make will have on the world...

Gotta give them props for the surprise at the end, though! No date provided whatsoever, but CYBERPUNK is looking pretty sweet.

Sounds like a combination of two titles. Surely 'Fallen Jedi Order' makes more sense?

Edit: OK now I've seen it written as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

My guess is STAR WARS: Jedi - Fallen Order, like how the Dark Forces series went. So if there's a sequel, it's Jedi 2 - New Subtitle.

It's $15/mo or $100/yr compared to $5/mo or $30/yr for the current sub. Not sure why they make you dig around the website to find that basic info..

It does seem like a lot of people these days are confusing "freedom of speech" with "right to be heard," though. They aren't the same thing.

I think BANDAINAMCO doesn't mention Vampyr because BANDAINAMCO did not publish that title. It's not relevant to them in touting that they, too, have commissioned a new game from the Life Is Strange studio.
