Let's see how these drivers fare then. I'm not hugely impressed with ATIs drivers on Windows 7. I have two systems with ATI, my desktop has a 6950 and is 64 bit, my laptop has an X600 mobility(!) and is 32 bit and both run Windows 7. Both systems have the same issues with YouTube:

1) The video is corrupted and plays as though it started from a plain green key frame (i.e. wierd details move within a sea of bright green) when you start a video. This sometimes fixes itself within a few seconds otherwise you need to restart the clip to make it right.

2) If you scroll YouTube while the clip is playing, sometimes all text disappears and the video window goes plain black. After you stop scrolling, after a few seconds all returns to normal again.

3) I get quite frequent crashes if I jump between several videos in quick succession while looking for something. I get the firefox crash with the error report screen.

Numbers 2 and 3 occur much more at times of slow connection. I have had literally hundreds of occurrences of number 3 between the two systems!

Does anyone have experience of this? The laptop was fine before Windows 7 and both systems are quite regular. It happens so much that can't be the only one! I wonder if it's a compatability issue between Windows 7 / Firefox / Flash Player / ATI driver combination....

(Fuck, I should have started downloading these before writing all that!)

Hey Batman have you tried the Skyrim Creatures Alive mod? It's my new favourite... it keeps the wilderness spawns themed by region but it unlevels them. The most powerful spawns are very low probability but potentially you can meet them anywhere! I can fully attest that it removes the lack of fear you normally have while wondering and my new character has had to run for his life on a few occasions!

(By the way I realise this is the worst kind of addiction support but it's really worth trying!!!)

If they can just hold on until June 28th then it will be exactly 4 years that the game has been reported as on its way! I looked up the Blue's Archives here for the announcement... my eye was drawn to a couple of posts by people who are still posting nowadays... check out these 2008 reactions!

Ant: "Diablo is going to make me addicted again. :/ Myth has a big competitor now."

Cutter: "Ahahaha, sup gaming bitches? I called it! Fucking knew this was in the works for a while now. Anyway, colour me in. I'm gonna' hit this shit like Ike hit Tina!"

nin: "Somewhere, right now, Bill Roper is crying, wishing he'd never left Blizz."

Wildone: "Meh. next"

xXBatmanXx: "Watched the vids - doesn't really appear to be "more of the same". New characters, monsters are way better, gameplay although clickfest demon fighting, looks a lot better."

Beamer: "I don't trust Diablo 3 entirely because the team that made Diablo Diablo is gone. This is a sequel in name only."

... those were the days!

Oh dear, reading this makes me want to make a shameful confession. My name is MisterBenn, and my yet to play list contains zero games!!! I play entirely too many games but I haven't got that kind of giant backlog like you lot. Is that all down to Steam sales? You guys certainly do seem to foam at the mouth when it's the season!

What I do have, however, is a list of "games that I played some of and then parked to go back to". Do those count? If so I have SpaceChem, Orcs Must Die and Kerbal Space Program waiting to be played to exhaustion.

Oh and Mashiki, FWIW I thought Civ 5 was a disappointment. It improved on Civ 4 in terms of accessibility, speed and aesthetics, but in the streamlining they threw out some of the richness and flavour of the prequels. Where previously the game mechanics were more organic and based on the real world, those in Civ 5 seemed more arbitrary and self-fulfilling, which gave the game more of a board game feel than a world simulator. It's a case of taste of course but the game has been controversial for this so even at a low price I would make sure I've done some research. By coincidence I admitted to myself that I won't go back to Civ 5 and I started a new game with Civ 4...

I really liked that animated gif video, particularly the bit about Cinemagraphs, I didn't know they existed! Oh, and it's definitely pronounced "Gif", not "Jif"!!

Definitely an argument starter, some of those are seminal, some of those were the first to popularise, and some pleased the most people for the most time.

Only one of my most loved games is represented:

Diablo 2
Morrowind
Total Annihilation
Master of Orion 2
Pro Evolution Soccer
Quake

(I could almost have swapped in Age of Empires 2 though, that was fantastic too). Oh, and too early to include Skyrim although that could easily be just a matter of time.

Yeah this looks pretty promising. The tactical section already looks like it's made good progress and seems to be a great combination of the old gameplay with modern UI and fluidity. The new time system might even end up being an improvement in some ways, it might be clearer to understand if your guy's got time to duck and shoot, or reload a rocket and shoot at a glance.

The ant farm I don't find so exciting, a nice touch perhaps you still design the base on a single plane like the original. Am I right in saying your base can no longer be invaded? I thought I read that a while back... a bit of a disappointment but not a deal breaker.

Anyhow it seems like I will be getting this from what I've seen, the good parts of the original seem to be represented and the prospect of a newly conceived alien threat is great!

Turn based could be great fun so long as there is lots of detail in the game mechanics and you can design your mechs' components. The mention of community features is still very offputting but I'll override the shutdown sequence just for the moment...

Coming along nicely Sepharo, looks very similar to a project I *almost* finished last year. I made an asymmetrical hilltop castle thing, it had 2 major levels, a tower and a rooftop viewing platform with pool. I had a kick ass workshop inside but I didn't finish off all the detailing inside once the walls were all complete. I made a piston drawbridge but it was a bit lame (and I hurt myself making it far more than it did to any mobs). I had a 1 block of mud border at ground level that mobs would congregate on at night... I was considering rigging up pistons to buttons on the rooftop so that people could press buttons to push mobs off the edge to their doom!

So is Blue still running that old Trackmania server? He should convert it to a whitelist Minecraft server!

Edit: Also I've been following the prerelease Minecraft updates, Jeb's a lot better at finishing features than Notch was. His changes are individually small but they are quite sensible and he rolled out a handful every couple of weeks.

Er, I mean - I love Evil Dead! Couldn't agree more, it's impossible to imagine this turning out well. I see it's a female lead, does that mean a guy will get tree-raped in the woods?

I think Minecraft's a great achievement, even if they did get a bit lazy and promise/start a lot of features and then not complete them. You need to be open to the type of gameplay but that's rarely not the case with any game, and at the budget price that most people paid I would say it easily contains value for money.

Interestingly though, the frequent blog updates kind of backfire sometimes as they provoke expectation and make it feel easy to complain back at Mojang. If they add new game mechanics in an update a swathe of users complain "I can't believe those fuckers don't add more content!" If they add more content, a different swathe of users will cry "There are hundreds of modders that can make new content you fuckers, what we need is new features we can flesh out!" Mojang are far from perfect but I think sometimes they can't win.

P.S. Did you notice that commercial games get cheaper over time and indie games get more expensive over time? Quite an odd place to end up.

Yep those extra "DLC" items are both outrageous, both the virtual foil and the "pay to complete the game rather than play it" thing. Not only are the foils bad in concept but they are too in execution - the foil screws up the artwork completely but running all these weird foily shades over it all the time.

That aside, I've had a lot of fun with this game. I've never touched a read MTG card in my life but this just plays like a TBS game and the AI is pretty good too. The AI is quite chess computer-esque - it uses heuristics and is very good at processing all the permutations of combat / activated abilities and instant spells to good effect, but isn't quite as good at long term strategy. I've been modding the game to add decks and the AI does however embrace the new cards straight away and puts them to good use!

The modding scene's already been busy without a toolset, it's going to explode now! Of course some wading will be needed at the start, there will be plenty of "sword of kill everything" mods and lightsabers coming out...
