13. Only three percent of games shown at E3 keynotes featured female protagonists - The Verge Jun 19, 2016, 04:30 yuastnav

Well DUH, trve gamerz don't want those pesky females pestering their precious gamez hurr durr.

Seriously though, I always find it weird when you start using percentages with such low N. When you use percentages that means that you try to use some sort of generalisation. In this case they did it because they wanted to compare it to last year but the number of samples is just so stupidly low that it doesn't make much sense.
On the other hand it really probably wouldn't hurt big game publishers if they had more women protagonists. I say the reason they don't do this is irrational fear and incompetence and the latter is not surprising seeing how some games turn out to be.

To be fair, a lot of the nigh 1000 games I have come from many, many bundles that I have bought over the years where it was cheaper to just buy the bundle to get the one game that I wanted instead of buying the game itself. So there are games I'm probably not even going to play.

Really looking forward to this game. At first I didn't get the appeal of M&B, just by looking at some gameplay videos, but once I tried it myself I couldn't get away.

I just wish for a more dynamic world and better AI. Whenever a war broke out between nations in M&B sometimes barely anything happened. I want nations to be able to conquer territory, destroy castles, fight each other mercilessly. And I also want to be able to build my own castles and towns etc.

I've been wanting a game similar to Test Drive Unlimited 2 and people in a thread a couple of years ago told me that what I'm looking for is Forza Horizon 2 (since The Crew is pretty terrible due to bad driving... why you would fuck up something like the driving in a racing game is beyond me).

Is Forza Horizon 3 going in a similar direction? If that is the case I'd need to upgrade to W10... which I really don't want to do.

On the other hand I did upgrade to Win XP back in the day so I could play X2.

The Horizon games are some of my favorites across all genres, and certainly best in class in racing/free roam!

Agreed. I had a TON of fun with Horizon 2. My wife at first enjoyed just being able to drive around in it (and wrecking MY cars!), but eventually she wanted to be able to discover her own roads and set her own speed trap times etc, so I created a new profile for her so she could have her own settings. Not much later she was actually doing races.

It's a really good and fun racer. It's not a sim, don't go looking for actual Forza levels of simulation in it, much less something like Assetto Corsa, but the open world and the cool stuff to do make it well worth it if you like driving games.

But is the driving any good? Like I said, I loved the idea of TDU2 but the driving was just okay and that is also the reason why I stayed away from The Crew.
I'm not a sim guy, although I do play Dirt Rally with a wheel and without assists and it is so much fun, but I would like the cars to feel different and not be too arcadey.

Probably not before 2019.

Anyway, I have given up hope that we'll ever see something like Morrowind again. How awesome it was to create ridiculous spells, put a ridiculous and useless set of clothes, armour and an enchanted robe on a character and basically fly across half of Vvardenfell... just because. Also, the way women and men walk differently in Skyrim is pretty dumb.

Oh well, we'll always have the sandboxy goodness of OpenMW.

What an action adventure with rpg elements like TES really needs is a next generation AI and dynamic world simulation. Of course you need to have scripted events if you want to tell a story but being to become Archmage and no one even bats an eye at that is pretty ridiculous. For that, however, you would also need dynamic dialogue generation and speech synthetisation. I don't think something like that is going to be realistic in the next few decades.

I wonder what "big plans" they have.

We'll see. I'm for one am looking forward to it. I would've loved to play Overwatch but the stars just didn't align. Hopefully I'll get access to my gaming rig in the next months so I can try out Lawbreakers. The concept of an arena shooter with less emphasis on vastly different heroes is much more appealing than the rock paper scissors style of Overwatch.

A fast, arena-based shooter with no loadouts, no special characters/abilities, no heroes, no bullshit.

Just balanced gameplay, a large array of awesome weapons, fast-paced movement and balanced and well-designed levels.

We do, it's called Quake 3 Live and no one plays it.

Barely anyone plays it because the game is almost 17 years old.

Very enjoyable old-school shooter

I don't get the appeal after playing the demo. It was just as disappointing as the lame multiplayer beta.

This is a casual shooting gallery. It's Candy Crush with guns. Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't see what is "old school" about it except the rather shitty graphics.

It doesn't even have reload. Most of my old school shooters had a reload mechanic and they often times had gameplay revolving around the preservation of ammo. Ammo was often times sparse, especially at the higher difficulty levels. You had to either aim and shoot really well or explore a lot to find hidden stashes with additional clips of ammo. That was old school. Not even having reload is casual crap.

The weapons also lack ooomph. Where's the visceral BOOM when you fire the shotgun? Not there. It's tame and lame.

Now add to this stuff like the glory kill QTEs (that's exactly what they are... a QTE) or checkpoint saves instead of a proper F5 save anywhere and you have a casual console port shooting gallery that may be fun in very short bursts on a lunch break but it ain't nuttin' special I'll tell ya that!

$2.99 sale for the GOTY. Maybe. But probably not. Pass. Next.

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't had access to my gaming rig for some time now and due to this idiotic one week limitation for the demo I won't be able to play it so I'll know for the future to stay away from this game.

Polygon "can't into Star Fox Zero," as well which was funny since I made my way through it no problem on Wii U.

They also "Can't into semi-realistic Medieval Slavic/Nord" of Witcher 3 when CD Red masterfully adapted the style/setting of the books into full on expanded sequel games, while not shying away or comprising from depicting how Medieval life was + myths done beautifully. Since we don't have time machines, books, games, and art are the window into it, so getting squirmy about it is kinda dumb.

*sigh*
I wish they didn't use the book as a reference for the combat system because it has absolutely nothing to do what we know about how sword fighting was in the renaissance and the middle ages.

No sane human would fight like Geralt because he'd end up with a sword stuck in his back while doing one of his little stupid pirouettes.

I mean, if we want to talk about realism, in fighting and medieval life, shouldn't we question the giant scorpions, the dragons, the magic, and the deserts in Poland?

Yes I see the point but this is one of my personal gripes. You don't need to make super realistic combat, it would be almost impossible and probably boring.
However, the way Geralt moves is just INSULTINGLY stupid. There is almost nothing realistic about magic, however, it's not something that has any connection to reality. But there is swordfighting and of course you need to adapt that to a game because the controls are much more limited. I just can't believe why anyone would ever think that doing a pirouette midfight is anything but moronic.

Never bothered to finish SPAZ1 either. I don't remember what size galaxy I picked but I know that I've stopped playing after a couple of hours because it got really samey.

Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily. I've put 120 hours into Stardew Valley and had a blast, but the combat in SPAZ1 didn't really do it for me. Maybe because I was spoiled by the combat in Starsector, which I'm coming back to every time they release a new major update.

I really hope we won't have to wait for Starsector a lot longer. It will take FractalSoftworks already as much time to finish Starsector as it took MinMax Games to make two.

It means you agree with a core tenet of fascism. In my book that makes you a fascist. Maybe you think a person can somehow make up for this character flaw by saying they donate to charity or something but as long as you honestly think censorship is a good thing you will remain a fascist.
[...]

Do you want to know what else is a tenant of fascism? Absolutism.
The extreme belief that something needs to be absolute. Like the absolute belief that anyone should be able to do anything, without restrictions.

It's a slippery slope.

MT Silver wrote on May 9, 2016, 15:09:

Yes. Also hypocrites. The less hypocritical countries do not ban Mein Kampf. I could walk down to my local library and pick up a copy if I wanted to. I'd have to endure some awkward looks but nobody would stop me because so far my country hasn't given up on its citizens.
[...]

I'm not sure how you could imply that Germany gave up on its citizens, seeing as how most of them had voted Hitler into power and it would take decades and decades to reeducate people in order show the dangers of fascism.
Though I have to say that it's a bold claim to say that the current German state is a fascist country. That's really not something I've heard before.

MT Silver wrote on May 9, 2016, 15:09:

Absolutely. The free exchange of ideas is the foundation of our society. It's the most important thing in the world and I say that with no exaggeration. The thought police must be opposed at all times.
[...]

Well I guess I just don't trust many of my fellow citizens enough to think this is a good idea. Especially when I see how many of them believe in conspiracy theories or that science is bad or that vaccines cause autism.
Nor would I want to have a discussion with someone who thinks that Jews are one of the world's core evils and that they have innate characteristics of being subhuman.

MT Silver wrote on May 9, 2016, 15:09:

I don't believe in this notion. It goes against the very idea of democracy. Any idea is worth discussion and everyone must be allowed to make up their own minds on the subject. The response to words you consider dangerous is not silence, it's more words. Oppose it with discussion, debate and protest not threats, bans and censorship.
[...]

No, it goes against the idea of absolute democracy.
The only absolute idea that I would maybe accept is that absolutism is inherently dangerous and should be avoided, regardless of what it is about.
And opposing ideas with more words sometimes outright doesn't work. There are enough people who have a fanatic notion of something that is true, like religion, cults or sometimes even scientists who try to hold on to deprecated ideas. In science, however, these deprecated ideas just die out, which has been described by the philosopher Thomas Kuhn very well.
However, there are still people who believe that the earth is flat and no matter what you say you will not convince them otherwise.

Something like this is sort of innocuous. However, when a political party starts to spread lies about a group of people or an idea or something like that up to the point where a dangerously large part of the population starts to believe in this idea, despite evidence as to the contrary, then I'm not sure that letting them do that freely is the best course of action.

Like I said, I don't think that holding on to an idea in an absolute/extreme fashion is not a good thing, no matter what it is.
