I think people get a bit riled up because it's Bioware and Star Wars. Bioware because they DO have the ability to innovate and make a quality game. But it really seems they're just playing it safe so it's WoW in space. They've had so much money and time to throw at the game and so far it SEEMS like it's just a new skin with a lot of voice overs and their Mass Effect dialog wheel.

I'm a fan of MMORPGs in general, but really have no interest in the Star Wars setting (even though I like the original movies). I think a lot of MMORPG fans are looking for something new in the genre and that's why SWTOR is getting such a critical eye and GW2 is getting praised.

GW2 is actually trying a lot of new things. It remains to be seen whether they work in practice, but so far it DOES look innovative, and the artwork is simply awesome.

I understand the allure if you love Star Wars, and just want WoW in space, then SWTOR will probably fit the bill.

EDIT: By the way, welcome to the comments! I, too, had been a lurker for years before I just HAD to comment on some stories.

Link

"Despite promises from EA/Bioware that the title represents a major step forward in MMO design, what we saw was essentially a World of Warcraft clone with Star Wars character skins and the BioWare RPG nice/nasty dialogue tree mechanism bolted on for non-player character conversations."

Bring on GW2!

Here's a really long, interesting interview with some system designers for GW2.

One of the many reasons I'm looking forward to GW2 is that in all the interviews I read, their reasoning makes sense and doesn't sound like a lot of PR bullshit.

I hope Hellgate London shows up there eventually. I actually really enjoyed the open beta they had recently, never played it the first time around.

There's going to be an open beta in September. That should give people enough gameplay time to decide whether they like it or not.

I understand why a lot of you don't want it now, but eventually it will be the norm. It could be 20, 50, 100 years from now, but the day when it becomes cheaper to do it that way rather than building your own system for the SAME EXACT EXPERIENCE, including mods, "ownership", etc., it just makes sense. The key is the "SAME EXACT EXPERIENCE." That's going to take quite a while, so I wouldn't worry about it anytime soon.

I wonder why it's delayed. 3 weeks isn't much time to fix many game-related things. Not sure of the release schedule for other games this fall, could they be trying to avoid a crowded week/month?

Don't know anything about the game, but the trailer on the website actually looks pretty good. Decent graphics, too.

I was right! Thank you for the expositions on why it's bad. Even though defining consolitis in this day and age is easy, it's best done by third parties.

Why do they present these games on the console? I don't get it. Is it to appeal more to the console gamers? Its such a ridiculous choice of platform when promoting a game through videos! The visuals are worse and the controller movement looks unnatural as hell...

They probably realize PC gamers are able to look past the limitations. PC gamers are the ones who make the mods that make the game enjoyable to play. I won't buy it first thing, but I trust the modding community to eventually make it playable.

I actually see a lot of possible innovation and potential with the new controller. Whether third party developers will actually take the time to take of advantage of that remains to be seen, but there are innumerable possibilities that could make games like RPGs better.

I hope they don't do this with Battlefield 3. I don't really care about SWTOR as I have zero interest in it. While I do think competition is good in the market place, I think EA's idea of competing also involves screwing over customers, which (hopefully) won't work for them in the end.

I have 2 games on Origin, Mass Effect 2 and Burnout Paradise (got them both for free). The way it's set up is better than it used to be, it's becoming more like Steam.

The people who like gaming pie is growing. My mom bought Boggle and Sodoku for her Ipod. This does not mean companies cannot make a lot of money off their core audience. It just means that more people are going to buy more crap for a while, until they learn to differentiate crap from good games.
