I just got into the Shootmania beta, played it a bit tonight. The engine feels nice enough for instagib (which is the true test of a smooth/reactive engine IMO). I haven't played the other gametypes yet, but the engine is the most important thing for a competitive FPS. Maps/game modes/etc can all be added easily through modding. So far I like what I see. Still have 7 more days to check it out, though, we'll see.

I've been waiting for a really good skill-based FPS since UT2k4. Tribes Ascend is pretty nice, but I really prefer instagib, and Tribes has no modding.

Yeah, I was hoping to see Anno more than 50% off. Think I'll pass yet again.

I used to go to Digg once in a while before the change, but it was really bad. Around that time I discovered Reddit and haven't looked back since. I really like Reddit, but you really have to look for good subreddits. There are thousands of them, and the default ones are pretty bad since they automatically have the most people.

I'm not sure what the best solution is, but I do think gear switching right before a kill is a lame mechanic.

Anyone have any impressions on CK II? Thinking about one of the bundles with it. It seems to have a lot of good word of mouth, just wondering if anyone here has played it. I don't mind a learning curve if it's worth it in the end.

Regardless of how you feel about D3, a 230% rise in sales should be enough to shut those fucking PC and Piracy doomsayers up for a bit.
Shocked that it was ONLY 230% rise on the PC end, considering it sold so damn many copies. You'd think it would blow the average completely out of the water.

Pretty sure it actually IS higher than that, but they're only counting retail. I and many others I know bought our copy digitally from Blizzard, which wouldn't show up in these figures.

Although I don't play it anymore, Rift is still doing well (for ITSELF, not compared to WoW) with a subscription. F2P, although having a shaky start (pay to win/necessary to buy to progress), has shown itself to be a viable, consumer-friendly method if done right. League of Legends, Tribes Ascend, LotRO, etc, are all good examples, IMO, whether you like the game itself or not.

GW2 is going to do extremely well, and it's going to put pressure on all MMOs that charge a monthly fee to make that fee extremely worthwhile for consumers to pay. Most likely it's going to force the hand of Rift (a quality MMO) to possibly think of F2P also.

I played the SWTOR beta and it was pretty obvious it was going to flop, at least in regards to how much they spent on it vs. how good it was/how many people would keep subscribing. Hated the plastic characters/armor.

I like the AH system. It lets me use a guaranteed stream of income (gold) to purchase items outright, rather than relying exclusively on luck of the drop. It also gives me and easier and less time consuming way to unload unwanted items.

Agreed. Really enjoying the game so far. (Never cared about online-only, I consider it like Guild Wars 1). They do have a lot of options for improvements, though, like more loot modifiers, and making legendaries more...legendary. I have 3, and they all suck. I'm going to save them though, in the hope that when they're fixed, they'll be fixed retroactively, and I'll be able to sell/use them.

Awesome game. Got it on a sale for like $1.24 or something. Would have paid $10. Awesome price for a great DLC. When it does run crappy (only when there's lots of things on the screen) I just consider it like bullet-time. Everything is slow, including enemies, so it actually gives you more time to think.

To people who actually like the series (no trolls):

I haven't played either one, but I have DS2 (from a sale), but not the first one. Should I wait to play the first one (get it on sale) or is the 2nd one enjoyable enough on its own?

It's sad to see games going down the same corporate road that everything else has. Pretty soon it's going to be a few huge mammoth companies controlling all studios.

Actually, it's starting to do the opposite. Since digital distribution has taken off, more and more indie companies have been amazingly successful. A day or three on the Steam top 10 list can cover development costs and then get some profit. With Kickstarter, some companies are forgoing the publisher entirely.

It's akin to the music industry when people realized the big music publishers weren't necessary anymore once digital came around. Of course, huge 100+ million dollar games will still require publisher funding, but a lot of good, cheap games can still be made indie and make a lot of money.

I enjoyed the first one enough for the $5 I spent for it. One thing I hope is better this time is the skill system. It was fairly boring and anemic. Hopefully it's more fleshed out with lots of interesting builds. That's one thing I'm LOVING in Diablo 3, the insane amount of viable builds to play around with.

I got Dead Space 2 on an Amazon sale for like 2 dollars a few months ago (with a discount) and haven't played it yet. Does it matter if I haven't played the first Dead Space? Would playing the first one add to the experience?

I suggest reading the entire kickstarter page. It sheds light on why they're doing this, and a lot of other things too. They could have still completed the game, but they want to make it bigger and better, faster. The kickstart will allow them to do that.
